Fall of Angels

Asmodeus lied to me.

While I shouldn’t be surprised, to say my feelings for the archdemon are complicated is putting it lightly. But now, I don’t even know if I’ll ever have the chance to decide how I feel about him.

Unfortunately, I know the terrible truth.

Asmodeus told me that I was the only homunculus he made that survived—but there’s another one. The leader of the deadly cult that’s been abducting archangels and archdemons, Octavian, is just like me. He’s a creature made from the flesh of others and given a life he didn’t want.

I’m Octavian’s prisoner now. He’s a sadist and a monster, and I can’t die. That’s a terrible combination. He’s eager to tell me all of what he knows, and why he’s been killing people and taking angels—but it’ll come at a price.

A price I don’t know if I can afford to pay. But I get the feeling I don’t have a choice. I just hope Michael, Azrael, and the others can find me before it’s too late.

I might not be able to die, but there are far worse fates than death.

So we start right where we left things previously and let me tell you this is one intense read with a lot going on.
I ran a whole gauntlet of emotions with this and this one for me is where I finally felt that deeper connection I'd long been hoping for,
Veil and Alister manage to take things to a whole new level with this and the final piece of the story connected me to Asmodeus in such a way that I just got him.
I got the what and the why and he became so fully dimensional to me just by showcasing his inner pain and humanity, hanging it all out there for Veil to see.
But as for Azriel well, I wanted to chokeslam him just so badly throughout, never has a character infuriated me so much, I mean just what was the whole point of it all.
I also found veil much more likeable here and she is definitely put through the wringer in more ways than one.
This had ups and downs and it really was an emotional rollercoaster and a fitting finale to the whole series.
This one gets an easy thumbs up from me.
I voluntary reviewed a copy of Fall of Angels (Halfway Between Book 3).

I really did not like this book.
Maybe it was doomed from the beginning as pretty much the only reason I kept coming back to this series in the first place was my love for a few of the secondary characters. However, not even Connie, Gabe and Michael managed to make up for the mess this book turned out to be for me:

I didn't care much for the female lead and even actively disliked the male one, the villain was so OTT weird that all he did was annoy the hell out of me, the climax was more than anticlimactic and the last 25% I found completely unnecessary. Overall, this felt incredibly drawn out and could've been cut short by a third, if you ask me.

What a bummer. All in all, this entire series didn't work too well for me.

This was the worst ending to a series I've ever experienced. The main character is brutally tortured & her friends just argue about "finding" her for at least 75% of the book. IT WAS TORTURE TO READ.
But I was invested in the outcome.

Finally, when her evil "love" finds her, he forces her to watch him have sex with other women and then brutally takes her against her will (although we're told she kind of wants it even though she doesn't. HEY RAPE CULTURE.)

To top it all off, her friends die and she goes insane. She does nothing but play martyr, constantly forgive those around her no matter what, and then suddenly it's wrapped up with a cute little bow with a marriage proposal? There is nothing redeeming about this book, no matter how much I enjoyed the other two for their unique characters and storylines.

Series Started Strong

The series started out strong but ended kind of clunky. The author separating the heroine from everyone for the entire book didn’t work for me. Her not being found for over a decade didn’t work for me, as it left a lot of the personal interaction that drove the other books out and gave me as the reader the dumps. The book was pretty depressing in it’s philosophical plot.

Finally! We've got the last book in the series and I'm torn between happiness that I got to read this one and sadness that this series is over!
Also can I note that this one has the most beautiful cover in the series! Veil looks so pretty in this one and there's Azrael with his glass stained wings!

Fall Of Angels was a little bit more darker than the previous installments! The threat of Octavian is serious and we finally get to find more about his origins and the reason behind his actions.
Poor Veil is pretty much put through the wringer! The first few chapters are pretty gruesome and I'm so proud of Veil for staying strong despite the circumstances!

The angels and the demons were pretty annoying at first, especially Azrael! But, I could understand why he wanted to hold on to his vow for so long. And I was super sad that just when Asmodeus and Veil had begun to put aside their differences, shit hits the fan! The latter half of the book picks up the pace and was high on action. I loved the scenes where Asmodeus showed Veil his past and the reason for his actions! You could truly understand the reason why he wanted to create Veil.

But the last few chapters had me sobbing though! If you've read The Masks of Under series then you would know that the author doesn't hesitate while killing off some characters! I won't give away any spoilers but I was super sad because of a certain someone's death!
Also I really loved how the concept of God and everything was handled in this one! I'd have liked it a lot more if Asmodeus and Veil got to spend more time together, but I think the last few chapters were quite satisfying! I feel sorry for Azrael because I think he's the most 'human' angel among all of them!
I'm a little sad that we have to say goodbye to some of our favorite characters but perhaps there might be hope for spin-off books with other characters?

Now I'm sad

Okay, so the last review I did for the last book in the series, Blood of Angels, I was moaning about how I had to wait 48 whole hours for this to come out, and now I'm sitting here, complaining there's no new book for me to fixate on. I can't win...

What a fantastic series you've created, and loved the bittersweet ending Veil and Asmodeus had. Bring on the next book already boo boo!! ❤❤

Everything this author touches turns into gold!! I was so upset when her series The Masks of Under ended and I’m really upset this series is coming to an end🥺. I felt a connection to Veil and Asmodeus and I’m heartbroken that the trilogy is closing. It was a wild ride reading these books and I couldn’t put them down. I read all of the trilogy in one sitting just hoping that I would get a glimpse of what would happen next. I can’t wait to see what this author has in store for us next!!

There were too many betrayals and lies for me to enjoy this book. At some point the character becomes unlikable. The explanations for their actions weren't convincing either, leaving me slightly disappointed.

Note - Spoilers for Shadow of Angels and Blood of Angels are in this review.

What a ride, Kat! This book took a turn that I was NOT expecting, and it made me love it even more.

Summary:
The final installment of the Halfway between series really starts off with a bang. Veil is now in the sadistic hands of Octavian, and he is determined to get what he wants. It's up to Asmodeus, Mike, and the rest of the team to stop him and find Veil before it's too late.

Review:
This book was much deeper than some of Kat's previous novels. We still get the amazing character development and relationship building that we know and love from her, but this book's philosophical and moral views are what really sets this one apart from the pack. The ending ripped my heart out. I really came to care about a lot of these characters. I would definitely recommend this series to any PR, dark romance, and UF lovers!

What I liked:
Veil shows such a different strength in this book. She gets beat down over and over but continues to be empathetic and make things right. Her relationship with Asmodeus grows in such a different and beautiful way.

Asmodeus... what can I even say. Gosh, he is such a devoted, saucy, bad boy that just gets to me every time. I've said it before, but his vulnerability is what makes him so layered and interesting and it definitely comes out even more in this book. We learn so much more about his past and gives us some real insight into who he is and his motivations.

I loved meeting the other angels and demons! I actually could have spent more time getting to know them. Maybe a sequel / follow up?! MIKE?!

I loved Asmodeus's flashback scenes. I won't lie - at first, I was a little hesitant because I selfishly didn't want to see him with anyone else. As I kept reading though, wow. What a tragic and heartbreaking story. Through these scenes, the book really took a turn and gave a level of depth that was unexpected and that really made me feel

What I didn't like:
I wish that we would have had more scenes with Veil and Asmodeus outside of the "other side".

Final Thoughts:
It was a wonderful conclusion to a series. It was heartbreaking, philosophical, soulful, and hot as f***.

A review for all three books of the Halfway Between series.

This is the third complete series by Kathryn Kingsley I've read and it's safe to say at this point that I'm a fan.

Everything is present here that makes this a signature KK book, and thus a good read: clever dialogue, hilarious banter, engaging side characters, a crotch-tingling LI, and smut smut smut.

I'll admit that the latter has quickly become like my number one reason for reading her books, but definitely the only reason. Suffice it to say that if that's all I cared about I'd probably just watch porn. It's the added bonus of a great fucking story coupled with top-tier smut that makes Kathryn worth your time.

That said, I'm gonna shock you all and say that the smut here was NOT my favorite thing about this series. The story is stellar (all existential, meaning of life, origin of the universe and importance of religion and belief goodness) and while I certainly enjoyed the smut, it was secondary and the books would have been just as enjoyable without it.

Asmodeous is the standard KK dark hero, but of the three heroes I've encountered so far (Valroy, Simon, and Asmodeous) he's really the least dark of them all, which is kind of ironic given that he's a demon. He really isn't that bad at all when you get down to it, and unlike Simon and Valroy, Asmodeous's love of humanity extends beyond the singular object of his desire. He's definitely got a much more prominent moral compass.

My interest kind of inexplicably waned towards the end of the third volume, but in another unexpected twist I somehow actually became engaged by the Epilogue. Normally I hate epilogues in romance (oh, they got married and had a baby and lived happily ever after? Shocking), but for some reason this got to me. I'm thinking it's because of the epic nature of the story, and the "several years" later situation hits different when you're talking about immortals.

In any case, do treat yourself to a Kathryn Kingsley book or two....or eleven. They're on KU, so it will literally cost you nothing, and they're so goods they pay dividends pretty much immediately.

So is there like a Kathryn Ann Kingsley fan-group I should join? Because I'm there. I really enjoy the series that she writes. They are so intricate and the plot is so well woven throughout all the books in the series. She uses imagery very well in her writing so you can really picture the scene she has laid out.

After writing reviews for the first two books, I'm not sure how much more I can say.. especially if I don't want to do any spoilers. So this will be brief, disjointed, and not very eloquent. What else is new?

1) I enjoyed seeing and experiencing more from Alistair's past. It really helped put into perspective why he is the way that he is and why he does the things that he does. The reader really gets to see the depth of his character.

2) The author did such a great job of writing defined, authentic personalities for all the characters, but I was particularly impressed when it came to the Archangels. I would love more books in this universe featuring the other Archangels. Please and thank you.

3) I cried. More than once. Who the hell am I? No spoilers, but the "truck-stop to the afterlife" scenes had me in TEARS.

4) I was really waiting for Azrael to lose his shiz. Like I wanted him to SNAP. So I found his part in the book to be rather anti-climatic/underwhelming. I kinda wanted to slap him up the backside of his head for the majority of this book. But his fatherly scenes with Vail were really cute and made me want to go hug my dad.

5) The way Kingsley writes just really does it for me and that is all there really is to it. I wish I could give her credit where credit is due in this review on her writing, but I can't put it into words. If you've read the book, you know the scene where she describes madness as a broken mirror? That is what I mean. It's beautiful and unique and she writes like that throughout all her books.

The Masks of Under series is what alerted me to this brilliant & highly addictive author, and I've never looked back. In fact, she's the one who got me back into paranormal/fantasy books, and I've been in love with her writing ever since. Now, Fall of Angels is the 3rd book in her newest series, Halfway Between, and since it's a continuing story, there's no way around this fact; YOU HAVE TO READ Shadows of Angels (Book 1), and Blood of Angels (Book 2) IN ORDER! Since this is the 3rd book AND conclusion, I'm not going to give details away, (you can read the blurb), just my emotional takeaways instead, and they are many since she went b*lls to the wall with the wrap up. All of my questions were answered in intense ways, while I was able to come to grips with other characters reasons for pulling the nonsense they did, and in some cases, forgave them completely. The twists were bigger, my f-bombs louder, and then the tears. Yeah, my eyes leaked for whatever reason, maybe it's because of the ending, or maybe it's because while I was impatient for each book to come out, I wasn't ready to say goodbye either. The good news is Ms. Kingsley is so good at weaving together a story with her descriptive genius, that I can revisit them over & over again making it very probable I'll see new things. And that's all from me, hit that one click button, and if you haven't started this series/trilogy yet, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU WAITING FOR?! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!

This trilogy has it all
*Suspense that will have you holding your breath
white-knuckling your kindle
*A Unique blend of Tones that engages all the readers' emotional planes
- Some may even have you questioning your reality
*Characters that span both sides of the moral fence
- Gray is my new color

We pick up right where we left off
Terrified Trapped and Tortured
Veil surprised me in this final episode. She has a strength to her.
I am not talking her physical, though she can kick arse with the best, her sense of self (?).
She weighs her current reality before reacting and how she responds - Okay, for the most part, she is a bit human after all.
It's hard to put into words but I think those who have journeyed with her will understand.
What she faces in this final chapter - I'm so sorry

Octavian I get it I do I just wish you had chosen a different method to test your theory.

Asmodeus - I was wrong so wrong

Azriel - You were not wrong, but a soul can only take so much before it must bend.

Kingsley has that magic touch few authors have.
She can weave a universe that will test her readers' boundaries. That will entertain but also cause pause pushing readers to think outside the box.
Question those black and white lines
But isn't that what fiction is all about?

What if?

Wow, that book was intense. I stopped and started several times over a few days.

Veil had been kidnapped by the evil guy, and she gets tortured for most of this book. Seriously. And it was hard to take. I hate reading torture. And then it gets worse! And then the evil guy kills one of the priests! I mean, this book is mean!

But it does have scope. And the evil hero does get time on the page to ... repent, which was my big beef with the magician books by this author. He had to explain himself and he did... make amends in a costly way.

It did kind of drag for me at times, and I wasn’t expecting the book to be so... heavy. And the whole plot with the evil guy... I got really tired of him. Really. Tired. His motivations, thoughts , fate got too much page time for me. But it did balance the book, I guess.

I don’t know how to think about this book, really. Like I said, Veil getting tortured was awful, and then what happened to her was brutal. The evil guy got soo much page time and got to ... kind of ... win? I hated that they all went along with it. All these archangels. And then Veil’s mind breaks and then her dad guy breaks his vow? ... the whole book kind of concludes as ‘what was the point?’ And it’s just a big shrug.

But I did cry when the priest died. I don’t know what to give as stars.

I found this trilogy very well written. The world building was good, and it made me curious from book 1. It's a very different story with Angels and Demons. And given that I do appreciate either/both, I have quite the extended reading experience, and I have to admit that the world Ms. Kingsley has developed is rather unique.
I'm glad Selina/Veil eventually grew up and is not so angry anymore. Even if for that to have happened, a lot of other unfortunate occurrences have occurred. I liked Conrad and Lucifer very much, even if their page time was limited. Because of course we cared about angry Veil more.
It's the first time I read this author and I admit that I enjoyed her writing, even if I don't always agree with the direction of her story, but then again it wasn't mine to agree or disagree. I am browsing the rest of her series and will probably read her again.

PS: The last 25% of book 3, were very hawt!!!

Wow!

I really don’t know where to begin but Kat’s mind is a wonder to behold! This series is an unusual paranormal romance combined with a story of friendship, the sentiment of a ‘buddy movie’, a cracking group of characters and the fight between good and evil, yet the villains are not all they seem. Tears, thrills and romance; and the question what will happen to Veil and Asmodeus, as well as the ultimate question regarding our existence. A rollercoaster of a series. Loved this. Definitely reading more of Kat’s books. No idea what to expect in the next series...I for one cannot wait.

Loved. It. 'Nuff said.

Or not, there's a lot more to say. I loved how well written this series is. I loved how controversial and heartbreaking it was. And I freaking loved that bitter sweet ending that made me cry and smile at the same time.
While I had my doubts when I first started , 'Halfway Between' quickly became a series that I'll never forget for portraying perfectly how love changes people and their beliefs.
I recommend this series with all my heart and I'm sad to see it end.

Fall of Angels Review

The final book in this series was very dark and painful. But where there is darkness there will be light and where there is pain there will always be hope.
I adore these characters and absolutely love the author's take on her Archdemons and Archangels. It was a rough and twisted road getting there the ending was absolutely beautiful.
And even though I will miss seeing these characters again for me the series ended perfectly and I would definitely recommend it.

For being inhuman, Veil really worked on my nerves in book 1. How naive can you be as an immortal?
Ugh, her self pity & whinging almost made this a dnf.
But I stayed for the snark. And the priests. And lill Melon.
Interesting take on Heaven & Hell, though honestly... could've been wrapped up in 2 books.
But a trilogy sounds so much better doesn't it 😏
Regardless, book 3 redeemed Veil, so there's that.

It only took me eight thousand years to come back to this series. But we’re here, we’ve made it.

I wasn’t disappointed. The ending was just as fittingly epic and satisfying as the rest of the trilogy. I really loved it. REALLY REALLY loved it. I would recommend Kathryn’s books to anyone who likes dark urban fantasy. And I’m definitely going to be reading more of her work. The level of detail and emotion poured into the conclusion was tear-inducing. Worth it. Just worth it.

Every book in this series has been great. This final one though put me through an emotional gauntlet. I haven't had this much of a cry in a long while. Thank goodness it had a happy ending even though it was bittersweet. Highly recommend this series!! Looking forward to the next new series Kathryn puts out!!

I feel that three stars may be a bit generous for this final installment of the series. I felt like it was a bit of a letdown. The conflict with Octavian was too easily resolved and Veil and Alistair’s spiritual experience together at the end was just strange. I get the purpose of it, but I don’t feel like it worked.

Really good! It could have been better. But look, I will not complain. I love my tropes. I like how this turned out. One of the better reads I had over the last few months. Asmodeus is a lying son of a bitch. Veil is overly sorry for herself. But I love anything angels and demons. So I am living!

I loved this book so much. I cried at least 6 times reading the entire series, the plot twists were just so unexpected, and everything was woven together so well. This is not one of those cliché demon stories, this book deserves so much merit.
