I loved, loved, loved Brittany! Her mouth was so reckless and she had absolutely no problem using it. Anybody could get it! She was reading folks left and right in this book. Brittany and Raf are sooooooooo swoonworthy! I adored them as a couple. They had such a beautiful friendship and their chemistry was hot. Brittany and Raf have some struggles along their journey to love. Raf is keeping secrets and dealing with family drama. Brittany has Vitiligo so, her insecurities are at an all time high. She let this skin condition hold her hostage in The Heights damn near since she was diagnosed with it. She refuses to leave her bubble (The Heights) because, she doesn't like people looking at her. I loved the scene with Brittany and the little girl she meets in Sugar Valley and she finally has her epiphany moment. That was such an endearing moment between the two of them. I just hate it took Brittany so long to finally embrace her condition and stop being so afraid of what people think when they see her. The interview Raf did with Wil felt so real. That particular scene really puts CCJ's writing skills on display. In Tandem was intense at times but, still a wonderful read. The struggle of identity issues and insecurities was heartbreaking to watch these characters deal with but, they were also very relatable life issues. This is the friends to lovers romance you'll want to read.

Brittany and Rafe’s story was life. Friends to lovers. He fell first. I love the exploration of the heroine having vitiligo and all the things she endured, both good and bad. I found it interesting how Brittany wouldn’t leave the Heights because it was her bubble. Her comfort zone. It’s her home town and no one stares. CCJ is a pro and not afraid to explore important topics and feelings.

FTK!!!!👏🏾😂👏🏾😂👏🏾😂👏🏾😂👏🏾😂

I could probably write a review for a CCJ book and save it and then just cut and paste for the future books by her that I'll read, because the same thoughts always begin to coalesce once I finish the story. How does she deliver so consistently?!?!? Superb, astonishing, amazing, breathtaking, beautiful, etc, etc, etc.. You get the picture.

She has this perfect formula which she'll tweak from tale to tale. Sometimes subtlety, other times drastically, but the amazing thing for us, her fans, is that it works seemingly every single time. She is just supremely gifted in her art and those who have sought her works out, or accidentally stumbled upon them, should be truly grateful. EVERYTIME she gives us a little piece of her we can hardly wait for more, for the next time.

Buy it,read it and enjoy.👍🏾🔥👍🏾🔥👍🏾🔥👍🏾🔥👍🏾🔥

One of the best friends to lovers book out there. The fact that I didn’t even need flashbacks to believe their chemistry, Brit was just so comfortable around him and it showed. He is in love with her, you can see that heavily in his chapters but even when the moment came he didn’t hesitate to tell her either and I loved it!

Not only is the romance sweet, Brit has vitiligo and this book dives into her insecurities around her skin condition. I loved that the author didn’t just play it off as “I have this skin condition and I’m so confident, love yourself regardless bla bla” because to me thats not realistic.
Even someone without a skin condition gets one spot and we’re self conscious about it so why would someone with a skin condition that effects their whole body not as well.
But I love that we see her doing positive mantras and positive reinforcement because its so relatable.

Raf is also dealing with PTSD relating to his biking accident he had (he’s a professional cyclist) but seeing him be so brave biking with Brit and confronting his parents it really was a great story

This book gave me all the feels! I loved it! Brit was driving me a bit insane at times but I really did like her. Her wanting to help is what makes people love her. It just can be overbearing when she feels wronged. I enjoyed RAF and love that he admitted to loving Britt as more than a friend way before they linked back together. It was a good mix of friends to lovers/ 2nd chance romance. I really enjoyed this book!

This was a beautiful friends to lovers story. I just loved everything about Brittany & Rafael. I’ve never read a book that featured a cyclist and I thought that was a good addition to the story.

I've fallen completely in love with this series. Rafael and Brittany have been best friends since they were young teens. Rafael comes from a legacy of famous cyclists, so of course he follows in their footsteps. Brittany learns about cycling from Raf throughout their friendship, but instead opens up a bike shop, while Raf moves to Europe to pursue his cycling career.

These two have stayed in touch over the years, but Raf is back in Mahogany Heights after recovering from an accident, and still reeling from a betrayal by someone close to him. He feels out of balance, and the only place that's ever felt like home was wherever Britt was. It was seamless for these two to pick up where they left off, and it was effortless once they decided that their relationship was one they wanted to take to the next level.

Romance aside, I loved how candid the author was about the heroine and her acceptance of her vitiligo condition, something she's had as a young kid. It has taken Britt years to accept that she is beautiful and worthy of a romantic relationship, and we see that she usually has anxiety when going to new places because of the stares her skin can bring. However, Britt had to come to terms with accepting herself, and I loved that it happened independent of Raf. Yes, having a man who has always loved her regardless of what she looked like helped, but Britt finally looked in the mirror and told herself that her skin does not define who she is.

Can we also get into how SEXY Raf and Britt were any time they spoke Italian??!?!

I've been flying through this series, and I can't wait to see who gets their HEA next in Mahogany Heights!

TROPES: black romance/OWN voices/BIPOC; friends to lovers; famous athlete hero; vitiligo rep (heroine); mental health rep (anxiety); small town; biracial hero (hero's dad is Italian and mom is black); he falls first; hero/heroine with emotional trauma; rich hero

TRIGGER WARNINGS: heroine has experience with exes who made degrading comments about the heroine's vitiligo (the ex's comments/statements are both on page and mentioned by the heroine herself)

A Self Love Journey

Just when I though CCJ couldn’t blow my mind anymore, she writes a touching story like this!

Mahogany Heights has always been a safe haven and place of self discovery. It wasn’t any different for Brittany and Raf. Both of them needed to learn how to love themselves for who they were, even if it were for different reasons. Brit needed to accept all of herself and also learn how to accept all of others and not just the parts she liked. She learned this with her father, one of the most complicated relationships of her life. Raf needed to accept himself just simply for being and not for what he was capable of accomplishing. He didn’t realize how much this was a problem until he could no longer do the thing that made him important - or so he thought.

The characters in this story are layered and flawed but beautiful and inspiring. I didn’t want it to end. I learned more tolerance and compassion while reading this story. When a book makes me Google to get a visual of a character’s makeup, it has done the job of expanding my mind and worldview.

Cycle of Life

Book 2 gave readers a chance to visit our favorite township. Also, we visited Sugar Leaf Mountain in Sugar Valley. And it seems Rafe DeLuca came back home to claim his best friend as his lady. The events that led to Rafe leaving cycling with an injury in the career he'd made a mark in will have you fuming. You'll be surprised, amazed and enthralled with the way the story unfolds. Brittany was true to her word to Rafe, as she stuck by him. Happily we had some Blakewood favorites, grace the pages. You know my favorite , Carter, also Sean, the doc and hubby and, others I can't think of at this time. I think I'll hop on my bike and see if I can find a Rafeal to take a ride. (with). Lol!

4.5⭐️ Ride or Die… But Make It Introspective, Sexy, and So Damn Earned.

Now, hear me out: I had no idea what I was getting into with In Tandem. I am deep in my CCJ backlist binge, fully trusting the process, not reading the blurb, just vibes — and then BAAAAM. Cyclist hero!!! Just one week after the Tour de France, which I had been watching nonstop. The timing? Impeccable. The serotonin? Immediate. So that alone made me happy...

But then Brittany happened. Brittany, with a spine made of gold-plated fire. She’s not an athlete, but she owns a bike shop… a boss in her own right. She’s a woman who knows who she is, who reads people like open books, and doesn’t shy away from telling them when they’re out of line. Mouth? Unfiltered. Heart? Tender. Mind? Sharp as hell. She’s the kind of heroine who doesn’t need to shout to command a room — but make no mistake, she will check you.

What sets In Tandem apart — and makes it quietly brilliant — is the tone. It’s a little more contemplative, a little sharper around the edges than Love Notes. Brittany’s voice is deeply reflective, full of analysis, quiet insecurities, and nuanced self-awareness. And when Rafa reenters her life, after years abroad as a pro athlete, after an accident he won’t talk about, the two slip back into their friendship with startling ease. Like there was never a gap. Like her presence is the one place he can finally breathe.

Their chemistry? It’s not fireworks… again, it’s gravity. No gimmicks. No stupid sabotage. No emotional immaturity. Just grown-ass people figuring it out with compassion and restraint.

And can we talk about that moment? The one with the little girl and the Vitiligo? Yeah. That one hit me right in the chest. Brittany’s internalised insecurity, her retreat into safety and routine, and the way that single moment nudged her toward healing! CCJ doesn’t exploit this, she holds space for it. Lets the characters grow through it. And I get it, insecurities are difficult to overcome, so this felt real!

Rafa is thoughtful, quiet, and layered — not a flashy alpha, but a steady one. His struggles with his career, identity, and vulnerability are woven in without melodrama. You feel for him, even when you want to shake him. There’s tension, yes. Secrets, yes. But angst? Not really. This book trusts the reader to stick around for the real stuff — the connection, the shifts, the small glances that change everything.

And that’s the magic of it. In Tandem doesn’t lean on tropes. Friends to lovers isn’t used for conflict, it’s used for connection. They don’t fall in love because the plot demands it. They fall in love because they see each other — finally, fully.

I loved this. I really fucking loved this.

In Tandem by Christina C. Jones
Equilibrium #2
7h 23m narrated by Winston James and Nidra Sous la Terre, 219 pages

Genre: African-American Romance

Featuring: Friends To Lovers Trope, Biking, Vitiligo, Social Media, Homecoming Trope, Slow Burn, Parent Issues, Professional Cycling

Rating as a movie: NC-17/X for strong sexual content and language

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️½🚲

Songs for the soundtrack: "Breakdown" by Mariah Carey featuring Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, "Twisted" by Keith Sweat featuring Kut Klose, "Deep" by Blackstreet, "What’s Your Fantasy" by Ludacris featuring Shawnna, "All n My Grill" by Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott featuring Big Boi of Outkast and Nicole Wray, "Ms. New Booty" by Bubba Sparxxx, "What About Us?" by Brandy, "U Don't Have to Call" by Usher, "Lately" by Tyrese, "Free" by Mya, "Trippin'" by Total, "Feel So Good" by Mase featuring Kelly Price, "So Fresh, So Clean" by OutKast featuring Sleepy Brown, "Creep" by TLC

My thoughts: 📱36% 2:41:28 Ch. 6 - So the minor characters at the end of the previous book are the MCs of this story however the background story has been tweaked and that annoys me. I'm also tired of everyone having a deceased mother.
📱73% 5:22:47 Ch. 11 - This story is good but not good enough for me to stay up all night with.

I wanted to like this more but it was very middle-of-the-road so the emotions weren't there for me.

Recommend to others: Sure. This is a good series.

If it's one thing I will stand behind is black women reacting to having their feelings hurt. It's the same way I feel when mothers are defensive towards somebody when they're with their kids. idc how she decides to keep her and her child safe. That same energy I have for black women.
And that's the energy I had for Brit, idc if somebody was offended about her defensiveness, that's how she chose to protect herself and I'll stand behind it.

Other than that, I was bored reading this book😂💔my opinion of friends to lovers probably impacted my decision but it is what it is.

I did like it when Raf said he felt like the feelings weren't one sided when they were heading back home - most of the time the denial goes on for forever in friends to lovers books and it pisses me off 💀

The topic of expectations is hitting a little too close to home for me rn😂😂Sheesh CCJ, relax miss ma'am.

Them not having a third act miscommunication break up made the book worth it.

I loved this beautifully written story. For me it discussed what happens when something you love becomes labor and what it takes to find your identity once you step away. The hero and heroine were both wrapped up in things that were outside of who they were individually and we get to see them "cycle" thru this pivot in their lives. I loved how hard they went for each other as friends and carried that into their relationship. Its always good to be back in Mahogany Heights with familiar names and places. Winston James and Nidra Sous La Terre (new to me) narrated this story very well.

Christina knows how to write a damn good book boy! I absolutely love this book. Brittany and Rafael are SO cute! I loved the depth in this story, the physical and mental obstacles they both had to overcome. I LOVE the Heights and can't wait for more stories about the folks in this town.

So slow

Not what I'm use to from this Arthur. Book was slow and boring. The H&H act like teenager's. I'm only giving this book 2 stars because I respect the writer and her past work.

Great friends to lovers romance. Raf and Brit were good together, I loved watching them cross that line between friends and lovers. CCJ brought us back to Sugar Valley for a quick minute, and I loved that.

Brit was a great character. I found her to be so relatable and funny. They way she read folks for filth was hella entertaining; we love to see it. Raf was such a sweet guy. I felt for him when we find out about what he went through. But I'm happy he was coming into his own and finding his own happiness with his life and Brit.

One thing I love about CCJ is that she DOES THE RESEARCH! I always learn something when I'm reading her books and I appreciate the hell out of that.

This was alright def not as good as the first one but it was fine. Our FMC has vitiligo so some excellent rep in here for that I haven't read any book with a main character with vitiligo so loved that for sure. Our MMC is a cyclist this is a friends to lovers story and CCJ does what she does well here i just found i personally didn't connect with the characters too much and didn't really care about their love story but not a fault to the writing style. Spicy scenes delivered when they happened as well in true ccj fashion so love that
