A good friend keeps me up to date on writers like Lauren Kaye who do shorts and self published books.
I happened to have this older novella of hers in my current list o' crap, and gave it a chance.
Next will be Hearts in Darkness by Laura Kaye

O.k. So this is no Dickensen, but it is Hot Vampire Love, in a short story. Doesn't get better than that... 3.5 stars.

Favorite line: "I want to wear you all over my skin" (vampire says to human!!) Scary, not necessarily sexy, but it made me laugh.

Author to watch.

I liked this one a little more than the first. No dead mate. But virtually the same plot as the first book.

I read this because I enjoyed Hearts in Darkness so much but this didn't have the same magic for me.

In HiD, I felt the author did a great job at the novella format because she focused on such a narrow amount of time. While the characters did form an emotional bond, it wasn't instalove.

I expected this to be different since this was a PNR vs a Contemporary but I felt like the instant mate claim didn't allow me to feel any emotional connection with the characters. There were mate-smells, magic tingles, and extremely fast declarations of love, but unfortunately no sense of an emotional bond that wasn't magical or destined.

Dissapointed since I know how well this author can do with the novella format.

Read this last night. It kept me interested.

I had to go back and check which king I was reading about. Because I remember reading another Laura Kaye short a while back about another vampire king.

Lots of Vamp Kings in her world, I guess.

You'll like it. Read it.

This is a short novella that got off to an exciting start. I was really eager to read this one after having enjoyed the first book in the series.

This one could be read out of order in a pinch, but the experience would be much more rich and enjoyable. The first one should be read in order because it takes the time to give an in-depth explanation of the world building of the two vampire factions, the human's who support the good vamps, the proferred concept and the beautiful ceremony for when the vampire takes a mate and how that mate bond works. In this one, the reader is expected to have a basic understanding of this and only gets little refreshers instead of full blown explanation. Okay, so maybe I should have just said that the reader should definitely read the first in the series before tackling this one. ;D

Story opens in Moscow with Nikolai and his fellow warriors trying to take out a bunch of the Soul Eaters. Nikolai is the rightful vampire king, but he ignores that duty to be just one of the warriors because he feels responsible for the deaths of his brothers. He feels such guilt that he takes crazy chances. On this night, he tries to take out all the bad guys single-handedly and that doesn't go so well for him. He's riddled with bullet holes and is on the point of death.

Onto the scene of Nikolai bleeding out in an alley steps, Katherine. Kate is an American exchange student who is fluent in Russian and French besides English, but she's not there for the cultural experience. She's done a runner on the future her parents have plotted out for her. Kate's parents wanted her to put herself forward as a Proffered candidate to a vampire and she's just not into the idea of being used to service a vamp's needs. Trouble is that now that she's run to the other side of the world she still feels uneasy about her decision. That is until she comes across the dying vamp in the alley. It feels so right to help him and she offers her blood willingly to save his life.

There is an instant connection between the two, but Nikolai fights it because of his guilty feelings of inadequacy. Can he get past the guilt to forgive himself and take a chance on love? Can Kate give herself willingly when before she rejected this whole idea of being with a vampire?

As I noted before, the plot hit the ground running and never really slows down to the abrupt end. I liked how Laura is able to tell a complete story within the short space allotted to it. Do I wish it was longer? Oh, yeah because I liked the characters and would have loved more of them. The character of Nikolai has a sad background and he does have a great deal to mourn. Kate's background is not explored, but her character is described quite well just in the actions of her opening scene. Nikolai and Kate together are like a match to dried wood and their passion is on fire.

So if you want a satisfying read that can be finished in one sitting and you like your vampires hot, give this one a try (after you read In the Service of the Vampire King so this one will make some sense).

Setting: Moscow, Russia

Theme: loss, responsibility, destiny, love

Characters:
Soul Eaters vs good vampires- soul eaters with black eyes, who take blood from humans until all blood is gone (and death) – policed by the good vampire nation with its king & warriors.
Electorate – influential humans who know about vampires, hid their existence, aided them, benefited from the vampire blood to be healthier, and educated their young and especially young women, called Proffered – virgin woman to serve the blood needs of the warrior vampire with the possibility of being ones lifemate.
Nikolai Vasilyev – king of the Russian family vampires by default – his two brothers killed by the Soul Eaters – when policing a bad neighborhood, because they lost the poker game to Nikolai, and Nikolai feels guilty and does not want the responsibility thrust upon him as he is undeserving and overwhelmed.
Katherine Ann ‘Kate’ Bordessa – had been in training to be a Proffered, but felt as if something else, some other purpose was waiting for her (and a bit fearful of being a means to an end, not appreciated for herself)… so she left the program, and moved across the world to go to school in Russia… and her restlessness grows.
Mikhail – Nikolai’s head warrior – doing what he can to support yet push Nikolai into his rightful position.
Summary:
Nikolai, wanting to release some of his pain, tackles a nest of Soul Eaters on his own – and is shot twice, and bitten and poisoned in his neck… he manages to get a distance away but is dying, losing too much blood… Kate is out, she can’t sleep, and thinks that a walk will help her… she seems to be pulled in the direction she’s going… and then she catches a smell that draws her… and to Nikolai…
And she is drawn to him, she can hear his voice in his head – asking for help… and she drags him to safety, she allows him to take her blood (after checking his eyes and making sure he is a good vampire)… but when his men find them, she feels proprietary towards him, and holds them off with his gun – but they disarm her, and mind control her into sleep… taking them both to the country estate, she is put in the dungeon, the doctor aids in Nikolai’s healing – and when he awakens, and realizes she wasn’t a dream… he goes to her…
And the next 12 hours are touch and go… they are drawn to one another – she shows her courage and her compassion … but he feels undeserving, and is cruel in response, trying to get away – not willing to risk another loss… but ultimately he cannot resist her (and vice versa)… and they make love… and he mating bond ‘ties’ them (a pattern tattoo from his hand to hers) that must be consummated and ceremonialized within 3 days… though she feels the need for his blood (he has already taken hers, enhancing her climax) – and he gives it to her before the full ceremony… ahhhh
And with his lifemate at his side, he feels strong and capable of taking on the world, and his responsibilities as king.

Sometimes I’m just in the mood to read something really sexy and supernatural, and Seduced by the Vampire King *totally* satisfies that craving! This story is pretty short, but packs a delicious punch. I gladly give it 4 stars!

We begin with Nikolai, the vampire king of Russia, as he’s out patrolling Moscow for Soul Eaters (enemies of vampires and humans). Nikolai is severely hurt during a raid, and as he’s trying to escape, crosses paths with Kate. Kate is an American exchange student in Russia, but as a result of her upbringing, she has knowledge of the vampire world. In fact, she was training to eventually become mated with a vampire, but flees to Russia in an attempt to avoid being trapped in a loveless match. As Nikolai and Kate are thrown together, there’s an undeniable attraction and possessiveness between them. Neither are looking for a mate, but it seems that destiny has another plan.

I really enjoy this story! Though it’s short, we learn a lot about the main characters. We learn about Nikolai’s guilt over the loss of his two younger brothers 6 months earlier and his subsequent shirking of his kingship. We also learn about Kate’s life, her family’s expectations, and what she wants for herself. And best of all, we get to enjoy the spark between these two, and let me tell you, the chemistry sizzles!

This story is incredibly hot! For example:
“Forehead resting against hers, he pushed one finger inside her and met her gaze. She gasped, his finger so much bigger than her own, which until this moment had been the sum total of her experience. ‘Come on me, Katya. I want to feel it. I want to see it.”
AND
N: “I want you on my skin, in my mouth...I want to see you naked, explore you with my hands, part your knees and bury myself in you. I want to hear you scream my name as I stroke deep and hard inside you. That’s what I want.”
Lawwwwwwwwwwwwwwd!!!!

Since everything takes place of the span of about 24 hours, we definitely have to suspend our disbelief; however, I’m happy to do so. Essentially, Kate gives Nikolai the strength to let go of his guilt and sadness. And in exchange, Kate’s feelings for Nikolai allow her to realize that finding love and being a vampire’s mate are not mutually exclusive.

This is a fun series, and I’m super excited about the next book!
I definitely recommend this to lovers of supernatural/paranormal romance and vampire sexy times ;)

3-3.5 stars

This was a good short story. Kate seemed nice and Nikolai was a bit of a jerk at first but he came around.

Kate is the daughter of 2 humans that work on a counsel with good vampires that fight against rogue vampires. Kate had been training to be part of that society and even possibly become a vampire's mate but disliked the idea of that kind of connection to a vampire she didn't know or like. She decided to go to Russia for her studies to avoid the vampire issue for now.

Nikolai is the Vampire King in the Russian area. He recently lost his brothers to a battle against rogues and now doesn't feel fit to be King. He certainly doesn't believe he deserves anything good in life...

Nikolai is out hunting rogue vampires one night and decides to do so without backup from his vampires. He gets in over his head and is injured, barely getting away in time. He collapses in an alleyway and is no where near help and has no way to call for help. Kate, being unable to sleep and feeling restless, happens to twist her ankle right outside the alley where Nikolai is and finds him there. When she realizes he's a vampire (and she confirms he's not a rogue) she knows she must hide him from other humans. While she's doing this she notices a connection between them and she feels fiercely protective over him. Things go a bit wonky but Nikolai is rescued and Kate gets taken along while things are sorted out. When Nikolai wakes from his injuries he finds he wants Kate but he wont allow himself to have her and hurts her in the progress. Things do get worked out between them when Nikolai stops fighting the mating urge and he and Kate end the story starting their HEA together.

This was an enjoyable story. I didn't read book #1 in the series but there was nothing that indicated to me that I was missing part of the story because of that. Nikolai and Kate were both likable characters and I liked their story but I do wish there had been a little more of it to flesh out the ending a bit. :)

* note - I listened to the audio version of this book. The narrator did a good job.

Kate Bordessa was raised to be a proffered, a human virgin who is offered to a vampire warrior for substance and sex. But Kate doesn’t want any part of that life or the life her parents wish for her and so she escapes to Russia. While walking the streets of Moscow though Kate comes across a wounded man that she recognizes as a vampire. Unable to leave him, Kate protects the vampire from his foes and cares for him.
Vampire Warrior King Nikolai Vasilyev is on a path of destruction. Seeking vengeance for the deaths of his brothers-in-arms, he cares little about his station and less about his own safety despite the grumblings of his comrades. When he’s brought down in an attack though, Nikolai finds not only healing but solace in the arms of a human female.
Passion quickly ignites between Kate and Nikolai and they find themselves in a position they never expected, nor wanted.

I loved, loved, loved Seduced by the Vampire! In the first book of the series, In the Service of the King, I had a bit of a problem connecting to the main characters but that was not a problem here! Nikolai and Kate popped from the pages with depth and emotion while the story line instantly hooked. There was action, excitement, muay sexual tension and gratification, and all packed into a novella that was less than a 100 pages! And I just adore the unique world/vampire society that Laura Kaye has created in this series; it will quickly draw you in from the start and even by the end you’ll be clinging on the edge for more.

Seduced by the Vampire King can be read as a stand-alone but to get a better understanding of the world-building I would recommend reading the first book, In the Service of the King, before diving into Seduced by the Vampire King. Laura Kaye delivers a sizzling hot novella that you will blaze through, I can’t wait to read more about these vampire warriors and their kings!

Love bites! Rawr!

Wow! Laura Kaye does it again creating another fantastic tortured vampire hero with Nikolai Vasilyev! The summary pretty much best describes the gist of this novella that had me reading nonstop until the end. After reading In the Service of the King, I very much looked forward to the sequel that takes the story into another part of the world. This time it is cold, snowy Russia. The first book really sets the base describing this vampire world, its expected rituals and traditions, and the war with the Soul Eaters (the bad vampires). Seduced by the Vampire King briefly goes over those things, but focuses more on the undeniable attraction of the two main characters. Nikolai and Kate meet under dire situation. They sort of have a first comes bite, then comes love thing going on. Ahh, yes, *rubs throat with hand* there is biting and blood sucking! These Vampire Warrior Kings have needs, ya know! Well rounded with emotional, intense, and seductive moments, I really enjoyed this one more so than the first story. I can't wait to find out where Ms. Kaye takes us next in the series!

Seduced by the Vampire King is one hot sexy read!

Kate and Nikolai meet when she stumbles upon injured Nikolai in the streets of Moscow; she feels an instant connection and a fierce desire to protect him. Kate is like a ray of sunshine in Vampire Warrior King Nikolai otherwise tortured and dreary existence.

This was a short enjoyable read and I have to say so far I’m loving all of Laura Kaye's Vamps! Can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

Ugh! This actually started out pretty good and seemed to actually have a decent plot. Well, very shortly after I told some people it seemed better, it degraded into pure sex and little to no story. I also did NOT need all the non stop crude language!

HQ I am SOOO disappointed in you! Not everyone out here who reads your books thinks the more sex and less story the better. I'm upset you are not leaving very many options for us paranormal readers.

3.75-4 stars. This was a really good novella! Seduced by the Vampire King is the second book in the Vampire Warrior Kings series and is Kate and Nikolai's story. Nikolai is one of the seven "good" vampire kings in the world who fight the "bad" vampires, Soul Eaters, who want to take over the world. He lost his two younger brothers during a Soul Eater attack and has vowed focus only on getting revenge. Kate is an exchange student in Russia, who left her family because of their pressure that she become a Proffered. While most humans are unaware of vampires existence, there is a counsel of human supporters who train Proffered women. A Proffered woman is a human women who supports the vampire cause, a virgin who is twenty years old, who volunteers to feed the vampires. Kate was not sure she wanted to be a Proffered, but fate has other plans. One night she is walking the city streets when she comes upon Nikolai who is badly injured from a Soul Eater attack. She feels an instant connection to him and she lets him feed from her to save his life. It doesn't take them long to find out they are destined to be mates.

This book was a quick read, but had amazing world building. The story was interesting, sexy and sweet. The characters were well developed and had a great connection to each other. I really liked the atmosphere of this series too. Overall, this was a really enjoyable read! I binge read this series and was wanting more!

Kate, an American, dropped out of Proffered training and went to Russia. Nikolai is one of the seven vampire Kings and they are fighting the Soul Eaters. Nikolai and his warriors were tracking some of the Soul Eaters when he is shot. While bleeding to death, Kate comes upon him and saves him. Now they have kidnapped, thrown her in a dungeon, and treated her like a criminal. But when Nikolai finds out, he explodes. He has a suspicion that she’s his mate but believes he doesn’t deserve one because he’s brothers were ambushed and killed. But some things can’t be ignored.
Short, hot, and excellent story. A vampire who should be king but thinks he is unworthy of it and a woman who tries to run from her destiny but can’t.

Seduced by the Vampire King is the second book in the Vampire Warrior Kings series.

Nikolai Vasilyev is one of the seven remaining Warrior Kings. When two of his brothers are killed, he becomes reckless and believes he is responsible for their deaths. Kate Bordessa is a human woman trained to become a Proffered for a vampire warrior. She runs to escape that fate, but ends up meeting Nikolai who as it turns out is her true destiny.

This book has been re-released with new material. It’s a very short book at just over 100 pages, but it’s perfect if you’re looking for a quick read with a hot vampire and a happy ending.

While this story was better than the first, being that there was a bit more excitement in the beginning, it still left a bit to be desired. I just feel like there is so much room for more of the story to develop. I'm going to read book three, since there's only three in the series, but I'm still not sure about this series. It's a straight forward romance with very little excitement. I like to sweetness of the series and the idea of the mating rituals and markings, but I personally would have liked a bit more suspense, or maybe a little bit more danger. Other than that it a decent story.

Kate is walking down the street, and finds Vampire King Nikolai, he was shot, and she drags him to safety. His team finds them, and takes them back to his home. They throw her in the dungeon, He goes down there, and they have a sexy moment. He is upset, and leaves, but makes someone get her out and put her in a bedroom. They have more sexy moments. They talk, and after sexy times, he explains they are mates. They have their own blood sharing ceremony, and will have a public one later.

Kate ran away from her life as a Profferd. Nikolai is devastated that he caused the death of 2 of his men. Kate saves his life one night when he is in a fight with Soul Eaters. She gives him her blood to help save him and begins their connection. That’s what I love about Mates...they always know and feel it. Their bodies / blood have a connection. I love that they share the tattoo after the joining like they do in all the stories.

Nikolai blames himself for the death of his brothers. Feeling unworthy, he's neglected his feeding, he's been reckless in his dealings with his enemy. This night his luck has run out.

Katherine came to Moscow to escape the expectations of her parents. When she comes upon an injured man, she finds herself thrown right back into the life she's tried to run from. Now it's up to her to save a man who isn't sure he's worth saving.

Nikolai and Kate

Great writing
A quick but good read.
Nikolai is a vampire king grieving the loss of his two brothers. He puts himself in a dangerous situation that goes terribly wrong.
Kate leaves her family and the USA behind, abandoning her proffered training. She finds the very thing she was escaping.
Now that they’ve found each other they go forward to see if it was fate that brought them together.

Hot paranormal romance read in one sitting

Laura Kaye has delivered another instalment in the paranormal romance series. I refuse to disclose plot spoilers, and will only say I could read these books with greater enjoyment if they were full length, they make fab novellas but I want more of the world of the vampire kings. If you are prudish don't buy the book. I will be purchasing the next book in this series.

I enjoyed this story of the Vampire Warrior King finding his mate. It was too short a story though and honestly I would have welcomed more. Laura sets-up the storyline as if it was going to be the beginning of a series but before you know it the words stop and she ends the story just when it is just beginning.

This is the second book in the series and I absolutely loved every word. Kate was a kickass heroine and protector for Nikolai; in turn Nikolai was the perfect tortured soul for Kate.

I read this book so quickly because I could not put it down, not even for a moment. It fed my hunger for the written word.

I hope book three is just as tasty.

I enjoyed this one. It was more dramatic than the first novella and was just as quick of a read. Kate was a strong character and we got to see that right away in how she handled her situation. I would suggest this book to anyone looking for a good quick read.
