A wonderful story of a wombat and her child exploring their local environment -which happens to be on and around a beach at Wilson's Promontory in Victoria (Australia).
The journey is lain out in a beautifully detailed and coloured map on the endpapers - this marks the trail through various habitats and portrays many of the animals and events encountered in the story.
In short, simple but descriptive sentences Chambers captures the atmospheric and sensory experiences of the wombats in their travels - squeak sand, sand in a blur, the warm sun on their backs etc. Jackson's art work (pencil and gouache) is extraordinarily evocative of these experiences - with movement, mood and habitat variations captured perfectly.
A perfect picture book for the young.

This is one of the most beautifully illustrated children's books I've ever seen. My 1 year old loves it and I can read it over and over.

Cute little children’s book about an Australian wombat. The story chronicles a day in the life of a young wombat, based on a National Park, Wilson’s Promontory. Beautiful illustrations.

Such a beautiful book, both the illustrations and the simple and enjoyable wording.
I really enjoyed the range of Australian animals in the book and the inclusion of the bushfires and regrowth in the story.
