Being almost twelve is tough enough. For sensitive redhead and aspiring artist Eliza “Lizzy” Zander, two things make the summer before sixth grade even more challenging: her family moves away from the only home she has ever known, and her father's multiple sclerosis gets worse.
As Lizzy tries to settle into New York City, where her mother has landed a new job, she copes with feelings of fear, anger, and loneliness until she meets Cassandra, an exuberant girl with no shortage of confidence or mystery. With the help of this captivating new friend and a funny boy named Walt, Lizzy begins to figure out who she is and the true meaning of “normal.”
But when her dad's health takes a sudden downturn, bringing even more big changes for Lizzy, she'll need both her family and new friendships to help her figure out where in this crazy world she belongs.

This is a gem of an upper elementary/middle level book. When Lizzy moves from suburban NJ to New York City the summer before she begins middle school, her whole life is turned upside down. Leaving behind best friends and wide open spaces, Lizzy needs to adjust to new friendships and cramped apartment living. When she befriends Cassandra at her weekly swim lessons, she finds someone whom she trusts and admires, though new friendships are never without challenges. As Lizzy finally begins to settle into her new life, her dad’s MS accelerates, creating new worries for the family and for Lizzy.
This book has heart. It is tender and endearing. Readers will love the characters and root for their happy endings. I hope we get a sequel so we can find out how Lizzy does at her new school!.
Congratulations to Alida Durham Clemens on Until the Ocean Freezes, her debut novel. I truly appreciated receiving a copy of the book and reviewing it. It was a joy to read.
This is a great book about family, friendship, and adapting to change. New York City cannot be more different from suburban New Jersey. It's a huge adjustment for Lizzy. I really enjoyed reading Lizzy's journey of establishing new friendships and adapting to a new city.
Until the ocean freezes......
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
