AT SEVENTEEN, Jinx is doing a below-average job of staying out of trouble.

In her defense, being the first and only reject from the Virtual World she was born to enter was a bit of a bummer.

While every other denizen on her space station trains for their future life in the VR (a virtual reality designed for discovering higher wisdom and recording it), Jinx prepares for G

Rise of the Protector is about a future world where living in virtual reality “dedicated to comprehending greater truths about life and the evolution of human potential,” is everyone’s goal. Jinx is a young girl designated as 8-88 and is having trouble accepting the rules of her society, so she’s continually rebelling. Because of an inferior pineal gland, she isn’t allowed to join the VR world and is scheduled for galactic release. Jinx’s friend, 11-11 or Laris, is trapped in VR and needs help. ...more

Great characters, great story, great plot and pacing. Mix this with a bit of humor and lots of fun, and you have a great novel by Winn Taylor!
Looking forward to more in the Jinx Chronicles.

Being a lover of all things fantasy and sci-fi I thought to try a new delicacy, an ordinary run of the mill story. But Winn Taylor's imagination is out of this universe and her creativity is of biblical proportions! Needless to say I was blown away! I'm hooked and follow her now, until she retires!

I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway, and am leaving a review based only on my own impressions.

Heroes generally don’t understand their role. In their mind, they don’t think they’re heroes, they’re just doing what anyone else would do in an emergency. The thing is, though, only a handful of folks will take the initiative, put themselves on the line for a good cause, and save the day. In this book, we have Jinx, a young teenager who’s most definitely a misfit. After all, she’s the first and so

Tight, believable plot. Detailed characterization. Wicked settings. All combine to create a terrific story. The fight for balance is beginning and a young woman will begin to understand that she holds a strength beyond her comprehension.

Shades of the matrix appeared, although different enough to be interesting and worth reading. Room left for many additional books in the stories that are sure to follow

Jinx is a young girl on a space station where almost everyone lives in a virtual reality, their bodies kept in stasis pods. It's a huge structure which brings up one problem; it's not given any background. Why was it built and why are so many people on it? Where did the virtual reality come from and why is it so similar to the plot of The Matrix?

She's been rejected for the virtual reality, though. Kind of an independent, trouble-prone seventeen-year-old. Likes to sneak into places she's not supp

The ideas are quirky and existential, but still reference things I’ve heard of. And I like that someone like Jinx, who would rather kick ass in a virtual battle than do anything remotely zen, is in love with the epitome of enlightenment. But it’s not overt.
There’s plenty of geeky stuff and witty banter, which makes it a fun ride and a fresh story!
I hope there’s a next one.
