To solve murders, you must understand the process of decomposition. Australia’s newest body farm, the Victorian Taphonomic Experimental Research Institute, is hidden in bushland some four hours’ drive from Melbourne. Scattered across its 150 acres are human donor cadavers and pig carcasses arranged to mimic some of the ways in which police might find murder victims: expose ...more

I've had a resurgence in reading zombie fiction after avoiding it like the plague for a couple of years. It was all sparked by reading Brian Keene's The Rising-an old school zombie read with great characters. Deborah Sheldon's Body Farm is set in Australia-Victoria to be exact. It's a lot of fun with gore aplenty and a cast of worthwhile, investable characters. Zombie pigs, birds, possums, it can seem quite bizarre and the lack of closure over the virus' cause led me to take a star away. With ro ...more

Shelves: zombies, horror, humor

A zombie story that gleefully deconstructs the genre with an explosion of no-really-THIS-is-how-people-would-react.

Set in rural Australia - a game changer just in the setting - on a forensic crime research body farm (uh oh) - the dead rise and between the cops with guns and the scientists with brains you'd think there'd be more hope - but it is an exciting adrenaline rush from beginning to end of who - if any - will survive.

Also - I think Deborah Sheldon gets the prize for first zombie kangaroo

Deborah Sheldon’s Body Farm Z takes place at a body farm in Australia–a place where scientists study how cadavers rot and decay under various circumstances. Detective Senior Sergeant Rick Evans and his partner, Detective Senior Constable Lawrence Garcia, are paying the farm a visit. Their request to do an experiment to try to solve a cold case has been approved! They’ve just helped to put the “donor’s” body into place when a strange cloud floats by. It’s oddly-shaped and -colored, and it release ...more

***I want to start by saying that initially, I rated this book 4 stars. In actual terms, my rating is a 4.5, unchanged, but I had wanted to write out why I wasn't giving it 5 stars. In honesty, I couldn't put it into words. I'm not exactly a fan of zombie fiction, so my hesitation could be genre-bias, so I'm changing the number to 5 stars.***

In Body Farm Z, we join two Australian detectives on their way to start an experiment at VITERI, an academic body farm. They are working on one of the detec

A fast, entertaining, high octane adventure ride of a novel- you start off reading it as a straight police forensics thriller – the Aussie cops (including likeable Rick Evans and his loquaciously irritating partner) are visiting a ‘Body Farm’ as part of their day job, where numbers of cadavers are scattered around and/or buried and scientifically examined for decay etc to help solve murders- a bit weird but OK, then it gets a whole lot weirder, as the narrative tilts and tips you into a zombie o ...more

I really enjoyed this book, it’s a zombie novel with an original premise, almost a forensic crime crossover. It’s authentically Australian with both its characters and setting. There are no cardboard cutouts here, the people are real, and the tension high, as is the body count. It’s eminently readable, compelling and gripping. Highly recommended.

This was an exceptionally good read. Body farm Z is a fast paced, skillfully crafted novel which gripped my attention from start to finish. Each point of view character was equally compelling. The author wove evocative sensory detail and character backstory seamlessly into the narrative and her brand of zombie fiction is fresh and original. The animal zombies were an excellent touch and the author's descriptions were a pleasure to read.
I loved this book and would highly recommend it. If there's

If you enjoy zombie themes, you want to read Body Farm Z. I can't say as much as I would like without the review being full of spoilers.

The synopsis does not give Body Farm Z fair representation and seems quite dry. The story on the other hand is fabulous. I didn't care much for the book cover, but what caught my attention was somewhere it mentioned the origin of the zombies. How it all began and dang it, I wanted to know. I was not disappointed.

As for the story, I loved Ms. Sheldon's character

'Body Farm Z' is a zombie tale with a difference: set in a bushland research institute where the decomposition of bodies is monitored and studied. Enter the protagonist: a police officer trying to solve a cold case. A strong character, his interactions with a fellow officer and the institute staff reveal the human strengths and flaws that drive this story to its grisly end. I could not put this book down. The plot is convincing, the characters engaging, the action fast-paced. Another fabulous re ...more

A compelling, visceral read that starts as a police procedural then plunges into a breath-holding zombie survival story. Deb Sheldon writes with a confident hand, creating three-dimensional characters that you’ll pray will survive, and some of the most original zombies you’ll ever encounter.

This was an effortless read, I loved the characters, I thought they were all very realistic and acted in believable ways. After the initial set up the action was non stop, the descriptions of violence was super graphic. The suspense kept me wanting to read on.
