The Prince of Mekena was a name that struck fear into the hearts of all the northlands in the world of Pleroma. Twelve years spent at war ensured the unflinching respect as the army's commander, and solidified a reputation as a deadly warrior. This was why, when given the order by her own father to venture alone into the uncharted southern forest and capture ravenous beasts, Vega was certain this mission was suicide. Deep within the forest, a tribe of humans live alongside a creature unlike any other in the world of Pleroma: the enormous apex predator known as the Mubari. For Sonja, living among the protection of giant wolf-lions led to a generally peaceful existence for all inhabitants of the forest. Peaceful, that is, until a blue-eyed stranger falls from the sky and changes everything. With the Mubari captured by King Dolan's mad scientist, General Lager, Sonja must traverse the unknown world with Vega, rallying alliances and overcoming all odds in order to recover what was taken from her. But when worlds collide, concepts of morality, self identity, and the cost of survival are called into question. How far would you go to get back the ones you love? What would you be willing to sacrifice? Your sanity? Your morality? Even your own humanity? Or will they become the very monsters they are trying to defeat?
This book is everything I could have wanted in a book. The story was complex but not confusing. There were queer characters, but it didn’t focus on that in the way other books do that make a big deal out of sexuality. This is a book that everyone who is a fan of literature of any type needs to read.
