description I enjoyed this book a lot. However, I wouldn't call it a "romance" since that part of the story is very underdeveloped and nonexistent. It was more of a family ensemble story with a little suspense and a little romance mixed in. That said, I adored every character in the book. Each one was very distinct and had their own secrets and mysteries. It was also very well written and paced. The plot was interesting and kept me engaged throughout, and as I said, I loved all the characters and their int

4.5 stars The Second Shot is an entertaining romantic suspense with an intriguing plot and a great cast of characters. For me, I found that the book wasn't just about the mystery and suspense of who was targeting the Deveraux family, but also the interesting dynamic between the various family members. They each presented with strikingly unique personalities complete with various strengths and faults which lended to some rather humorous interactions between them. Still, one can't deny the family ...more

“The Second Shot wasn’t what I expected at all! I thought it was going to be a story full of romance but surprisedly it wasn’t the main point. Funny, hilarious with the perfect mix of suspense. Trust me, the intriguing plot will keep you on the edge. I guarantee you’ll adore every single one of the characters, they were simply perfect in the most unique style. The plot was extremely well written and developed. Once you start you won’t want to stop until you reach the end. I’m so pleased of what ...more

An intriguing read with some intense moments!

Bethany Maines is a new author for me to read and I really enjoyed how she carefully wove suspense and romance together to create this romantic thriller. I will say, I struggled with the first few chapters as I tried to figure out everything that was happening, to get a feel for the characters, and to understand just exactly what was going on with the Deveraux family. But after the second chapter, I was glued to the story. Dominique was actually quite

Funny, steamy romantic thriller

The Deveraux clan is in a lot of trouble, in more ways than one. This book focuses on likable, beautiful, smart, confident (did I mention rich, whew that's a lot in one character!) Dominique Deveraux and charming, handsome, smokin' hot, US Marshal Max. They make for an adorable, quirky couple and a steamy romantic pair, all while trying to figure out who's after Dominique and her family, before someone gets run over by a car, or worse. This was a fun, quick read th

Written with an urban flair and a sense of humor I liked a lot, Second Shot got my attention from the first line. Oh. My. Gosh. Max and Dominique are great from the opening salvo to the end, and the epic dysfunctional family dynamic added fodder to a complex and compelling story. I was taken with this whole family. All different, all fighting their own demons, yet underneath it all, there’s a lot of love. This is a 5+ star from me, and I’m hoping, hoping, hoping the author will be writing more i ...more

I enjoyed the steamy modern romance set against the family drama. The Deveraux family always has each others backs even thought they shy away from saying anything real to each other. If you've ever felt like your family had no idea who you were but at the same time, loved them - this is the book for you. Plus Dominique and Max together were super hot. I expected the book to hit a lull at some point but it never did. Solid tension, action and 'ooh la la' all the way through. ...more

Smart, sexy, funny with a side of danger! Outstanding story that’s wonderfully written with some of the best family dynamics I’ve ever read, loads of scary danger, hilarious banter, bizarre situations and characters that are rich, unique and complex. The Devereaux clan is such an interesting dichotomy of rich snobbery and laidback charm. I loved them all even the meanie, Evan. Each of the ‘children” under Grandma’s thumb are rebellious to the point of hilarity and sometimes destructiveness but t ...more

Wow. I’m crushing pretty hard on this book right now. There’s not much I love more than romantic suspense that dips into rom-com territory. This story does that with a flair that reminds me of Knight and Day or Mr. & Mrs. Smith. I adored Max. He’s strong enough to admit to his mistakes and even apologize for them. Dominique wears a lot of different masks to protect herself. So do her brother and cousins. A big portion of the story is devoted to digging the Deveraux family out from behind those m ...more

U.S. Marshal Maxwell Ames is home visiting his father when he again meets Dominique Devereaux. Their first meeting, years ago, was a complete drunken embarrassment to him, so he humbly apologizes…and she accepts. There have been threats against the family, but nothing like the car, with no driver, that crashes through the window of their home. Dominique has had it with no results from the police and decides to investigate, with Max as her backup. There is instant attraction between them and Max ...more

Don't let some crazy thing you did in college stand in your way of true chemistry! This story is full of just the right amount of romance and suspense. I received a free copy of this book through Hidden Gems and I voluntarily chose to review it. This is the first Bethany Maines book I have read. I look forward to the next book. This is a well written book and it has some intense characters. This one is worth your time and effort. I don't do spoilers but it does have some mystery so get the book and check it out. It is a second chance story. ...more

There were so many facets to it that I could sink my teeth into – politics and the lifestyles of the rich and famous, mystery and mischief, family intrigues and dysfunction and wonderfully likeable characters that I wanted to invest time into.

I enjoyed the fact that the story didn’t only focus on our two lovebirds; I so enjoyed taking a peek into the lives and psyches of other members of Dominique’s family and learning more about the family dynamic. Even though there was danger and thickening p

The Second Shot is my first read by Bethany Maines, and I thoroughly enjoyed this intriguing, thrilling and mystery filled romance. The Deveraux family are dynamic and totally addictive and certain to capture many readers attention with the promise of more gripping stories to come. I don't normally like romance book characters in their 20s. I don't think they've experienced enough in their lives for an emotionally mature relationship, and I usually get bored with the immature drama. (I'm just too old for that!)

But as I read the sample of this romantic suspense before buying it, I began to see that the romance wasn't really the focus. It was more an introduction to the members of the Devereux family. And they are a real bunch of characters.

I received this as an advanced reading copy.

I totally enjoyed this book. The plot and the characters. I can't wait to find out what happens to Dominique's brother and cousins. They were so well developed with their own issues and mysteries that there must be books coming out about them as well.

Some authors try to hard to be too PC these days. This author approaches it as an honest conversation while recognizing that sometimes you just can't win for losing. In the end, you don't feel like the a

4.5 Rating:
“The Second Shot” was an entertaining, well written thriller/romance. I thoroughly enjoyed the world building and all of the characters. The relationships between all of the Deveraux siblings/cousins was both hilarious and heart wrenching to read. I definitely loved the chemistry between Max and Dominique, and loved reading about there growing romance.
This book left me wanting more from the Deveraux family and I’m excited to read more about them in book 2!!

This novel is filled with action and thrills. There is a lot of detail that went into the characters background to make their relationships more complex, which I liked. It kept me guessing. The pacing of the novel is also perfect for the plot line! Maine’s does a great job pulling the reader in! If you like action, adventure, and a bit of romance this novel is for you!

I wanted to like this book. I love the bodyguard trope and it sounded like a good romantic suspense novel. However, there's never any suspense (it's very obvious who the bad guys are), and Dominque's family was written in an almost laughable way. They seemed like caricatures of political or rich people who lived in the morally grey area and have "dark" pasts and are misunderstood.

This was a very interesting story that kept me reading until the very last page. I will say that I thought I was getting a thriller romance but the romance in this one was light. This was a great little blend of family and suspense. The characters were amazing though. I loved how the story unfolded and the ending. I can not wait to read more from this author.

The Second Shot is the first book that I have read from Bethany Maines. I actually enjoyed it even though I don't normally read action romances. I almost feel like I can't call this a romance though because it wasn't really one. It has "dating" and kissing and some sex but not as much as you would think.
I enjoyed the banter between the cousins and it was a little funny to me that Max thought Jackson and Nika were dating for a bit there. I felt kinda bad for him but still a bit funny. I enjoyed

A quirky leisurely read for a lazy day

Your usual dysfunctional family. (Aren't they all?). With more than usual wealth, eccentricity and flamboyance, blended with humor and heart.

This would have to be the best book I've read recently. It was intriguing and a real page turner, but also reasonably light and just all round really enjoyable to read.

The story begins on the premise of U.S. Marshal Maxwell Ames meeting Dominique Deveraux 6 years after he botched up any potential of a relationship with her. But he's given a second chance when he gets tangled up with the Deveraux's when someone tries to attack members of the family.

Great characters and development of them, some n
Family Drama
Whilst marketed as romantic suspense, it was more a complex tale of family dynamics. The Deveraux cousins are a dysfunctional group under the authoritarian rule of their grandmother. At times I felt the characters had multiple personality disorders as they conversed or acted contrary to how the author had depicted them. The author also seemed confused as to where the story was taking place. A location was only mentioned late in the book when the heroine recognised an Illinois phone n
