The Second Shot
I enjoyed this book a lot. However, I wouldn't call it a "romance" since that part of the story is very underdeveloped and nonexistent. It was more of a family ensemble story with a little suspense and a little romance mixed in. That said, I adored every character in the book. Each one was very distinct and had their own secrets and mysteries. It was also very well written and paced. The plot was interesting and kept me engaged throughout, and as I said, I loved all the characters and their int ...more
Bethany Maines is a new author for me to read and I really enjoyed how she carefully wove suspense and romance together to create this romantic thriller. I will say, I struggled with the first few chapters as I tried to figure out everything that was happening, to get a feel for the characters, and to understand just exactly what was going on with the Deveraux family. But after the second chapter, I was glued to the story. Dominique was actually quite ...more
The Deveraux clan is in a lot of trouble, in more ways than one. This book focuses on likable, beautiful, smart, confident (did I mention rich, whew that's a lot in one character!) Dominique Deveraux and charming, handsome, smokin' hot, US Marshal Max. They make for an adorable, quirky couple and a steamy romantic pair, all while trying to figure out who's after Dominique and her family, before someone gets run over by a car, or worse. This was a fun, quick read th ...more
Initially, I had some trouble to understand what was going on. But once I figured everything out I started to enjoy it.
This book is really well written. The plot is interesting and has the perfect mix between romance, suspense and mistery. It keep me engaged throughout the story.
Dominique and Max are the perfect couple. And Not only the main characters are great, the secondary ones are so interesting too that I enjoyed ...more

This book was a journey, and to be honest, I’m not quite sure where to start.
I received this book from the publisher, and from a tour company that I work with. Immediately, I’ll admit, I was drawn into the romance of it. Plot be damned, I ...more
I enjoyed the fact that the story didn’t only focus on our two lovebirds; I so enjoyed taking a peek into the lives and psyches of other members of Dominique’s family and learning more about the family dynamic. Even though there was danger and thickening p ...more
I don't normally like romance book characters in their 20s. I don't think they've experienced enough in their lives for an emotionally mature relationship, and I usually get bored with the immature drama. (I'm just too old for that!)
But as I read the sample of this romantic suspense before buying it, I began to see that the romance wasn't really the focus. It was more an introduction to the members of the Devereux family. And they are a real bunch of characters.
There is also some good...more
I totally enjoyed this book. The plot and the characters. I can't wait to find out what happens to Dominique's brother and cousins. They were so well developed with their own issues and mysteries that there must be books coming out about them as well.
Some authors try to hard to be too PC these days. This author approaches it as an honest conversation while recognizing that sometimes you just can't win for losing. In the end, you don't feel like the a ...more
“The Second Shot” was an entertaining, well written thriller/romance. I thoroughly enjoyed the world building and all of the characters. The relationships between all of the Deveraux siblings/cousins was both hilarious and heart wrenching to read. I definitely loved the chemistry between Max and Dominique, and loved reading about there growing romance.
This book left me wanting more from the Deveraux family and I’m excited to read more about them in book 2!!
This novel is filled with action and thrills. There is a lot of detail that went into the characters background to make their relationships more complex, which I liked. It kept me guessing. The pacing of the novel is also perfect for the plot line! Maine’s does a great job pulling the reader in! If you like action, adventure, and a bit of romance this novel is for you!
I wanted to like this book. I love the bodyguard trope and it sounded like a good romantic suspense novel. However, there's never any suspense (it's very obvious who the bad guys are), and Dominque's family was written in an almost laughable way. They seemed like caricatures of political or rich people who lived in the morally grey area and have "dark" pasts and are misunderstood. ...more
I enjoyed the banter between the cousins and it was a little funny to me that Max thought Jackson and Nika were dating for a bit there. I felt kinda bad for him but still a bit funny. I enjoyed ...more
The story begins on the premise of U.S. Marshal Maxwell Ames meeting Dominique Deveraux 6 years after he botched up any potential of a relationship with her. But he's given a second chance when he gets tangled up with the Deveraux's when someone tries to attack members of the family.

Whilst marketed as romantic suspense, it was more a complex tale of family dynamics. The Deveraux cousins are a dysfunctional group under the authoritarian rule of their grandmother. At times I felt the characters had multiple personality disorders as they conversed or acted contrary to how the author had depicted them. The author also seemed confused as to where the story was taking place. A location was only mentioned late in the book when the heroine recognised an Illinois phone n ...more
