He was told to focus on school. No-one thought he'd do it through a rifle scope ...
Bradley Wright and two other high-schoolers opened fire on their classmates. Rafferty watched from his office window as the horror unfolded. Too close to turn away. Too far to do anything about it. He can't turn back the clock, but to help Dallas recover from the tragedy, Rafferty will play his part in making sure the full weight of justice lands squarely on Bradley Wright's shoulders. Nothing less than the shooter deserves. So, when Bradley's mother comes looking for help in proving her son's innocence, why does she want Rafferty? And why can't he shake the feeling there's something he's missing? There's right and there's wrong. Separating the two will push Rafferty farther than ever. Maybe over the edge ...

Praise for Rafferty P.I.
"If you like Parker's Spenser, or Robert Crais' Elvis Cole you should love the Rafferty series." - Mark A. Johnson.
"Rafferty is the best hardboiled PI of this era." - Wendy Green.
"Any fan of Micky Spillane, the Jack Reacher novels, or Mark Yost's Rick Crane novels should absolutely venture into the world of Rafferty P.I." - Michael Raabe.
"Duncan truly captured the pure essence of the definitive smart-ass private eye in his character Rafferty. Take part Sam Spade with a little Mike Hammer, mix in some Spenser and you have an awesome character." - Cliff Fausset.
"This author goes on my list of great private eye writers along with Kinky Friedman, Elmore Leonard, and Lawrence Sanders." - Tricia Schiro.
Set in the 1980's this is a very clever thriller, starting off with a horrific school shooting witnessed by Rafferty, who is a PI with a rather unique approach to his job, and especially to his relationship with the police. The story follows Rafferty as he is engaged by the parents of one of the kids accused of the shooting to prove whether or not he is guilty. I really enjoyed that the plot was complex and had loads of twists and turns, especially the political interference, and the book was peopled by lots of fascinating characters. I also really enjoyed the period feel of the book. I received a complimentary copy of the book, but have voluntarily written this honest review.
Rafferty is hanging out in his office, when he witnesses a Columbine style school shooting. He's helpless to do anything until he sees and pursues one of the perpetrators, who is almost immediately hit by a bus and put into a coma.
The kid's mother tries to hire Rafferty to prove the kid didn't do it, and, needing money, he agrees. There are protesters in the lady's front yard, for him to take care of, too, so he gives Cowboy and MiMi a call.
Not bad. Not nearly as much action as in some of the series.
Rafferty and his cast of characters return in a case that is, sadly, highly relevant. Comparisons are drawn with other 'hard boiled,' PIs but to me, Rafferty stands alone. Bill Duncan hits all the right notes with his character; his rugged exterior hides a large heart, and his irreverent approach and witty comebacks are delightful. Add top-notch writing, and you have a rare treat.
It’s easy to jump to conclusions especially when you see only part of what is happening, or come in after the action has started. Today that’s going to happen to Rafferty…And the day is only going to get worse. The book has a timely plot, lots of action, and definitely lots of attitude.
Excellent book. I love this series and Rafferty. The pace is fast, Rafferty surrounds himself with likeable characters and he, himself is one of the best. I rate this book 5 stars.
