This is such a fantastic book!! I expected it to be very basic and only for young children, but it contains tons of really fascinating facts and information about how sound works, different instruments, decibel levels, types of singing voices, etc. I even learned a lot from it myself as an adult!

In the beginning it may have been quiet.
But then it became loud. The universe filled with sounds.
Sound is usually invisible. But it attracts our attention,
we listen for it--and then, we hear it.
BEAUTIFUL DESIGN.
BRILLIANT PRESENTATION on a topic that is not always easy to understand or may seem overwhelming to students. In sparse language and bright illustrations, Romanyshyn and Lesiv bring the concept of sound to life for middle grade readers. The concept of sound is bigger than what you hear - there are different kinds of sounds (loud and soft, high and low, familiar and new), our voices are our unique sounds and they can be categorized too (bass, tenor, soprano, etc.). There are sounds familiar to different places - cities, nature, a "symphonic house" designed by David Hanawalt, etc. AND sound is not all we can hear - there's sound language and the ways we speak to each other without language. And there's value in silence.
This could be read aloud to students - minus many many smaller details and then left in the classroom library to be snatched up for a close read.
I picked this up after reading this duo's book Sight: Glimmer, Glow, SPARK, FLASH!. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS ONE, TOO.

Great NF book about all things sound. From the (presumed) first sound to the (presumed) loudest sound, Romanyshyn explores what sound is: voices and music-- "our bodies perform their own music. They create so many different sounds!" The author and illustrator work together to dispel predispositions about sound, noise, music, and silence.
This book would be great as an interactive read aloud, a lap book, or a sit-and-peruse-on-your-own book.
Bright and busy, Lesiv's illustrations are sure to hold the readers attention at least as much--if not more than--the text.
Audience: PK-5th grade (or higher!)
Curriculum Connections: sound, 5 senses, music, voices of people & animals, languages, sound "scientists" (musicians, acousticians, musicologists, DJs, composers, sound mixers, etc.), fine arts

This book, brightly illustrated with bold graphics in almost neon colors, is a visually entrancing tour through the world of sound. Each spread introduces a different aspect of the world of sound, from instruments to languages to soundless-ness. Fascinating, eye-catching, and just generally an enjoyable trip to flip through!

What an intriguing book! I was introduced to this book by Franki Sibberson and her @textsets on strong introductions in informational texts. I was so intrigued by the mention of the Symphonic House that I looked it up on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjV31... This is a book you need in your classroom library so kids can pour over the information. So much there!!

Outstanding International Book
Genre: Music, sciences, picture book
This excellent book informs the reader of the scientific background of music and sound. This book would be a fun read-aloud for grades 3-5 and could even be used in a science lesson as well. I was captivated by the illustrations of this book. I also learned new things about how sound works!

This book was a delightful surprise. I wasn't so sure about the colors, but when I was done it was very pleased with this book! This very possibly makes my short list.

Interesting factoids about sound. Not sure it’s a picture book, but every page is definitely filled w infographics or stylized illustrations in nearly neon colors. It’s an import from Ukraine.

Loved this illustrations and the playful way in which rich information was presented. This would be a great book for a Science lesson introducing sound.
