Escaping Wonderland

Rate this book
He’s deadly, seductive, and completely unhinged. He’s also her only chance of escape.

Alice knows Wonderland is just a virtual world operated inside an asylum to which she’s been wrongfully committed, but she can’t find her way out—can’t find her way back to the life she lived before she woke beneath titanic trees and towering flowers. With the terrifying Red King searching for her and chaos all around, her only hope of escape lies in Shadow, a tall, mysterious being with glowing eyes, sharp claws, and a haunting grin who may be the maddest of them all.

But even if Wonderland isn’t real, her growing feelings for Shadow—and his desire for her—are. Can Alice and Shadow escape Wonderland together, or will she succumb to the madness like everyone else?
Loosely inspired by Alice in Wonderland.

"Oh, you're the most delightful sort of mad, aren't you?"

Well, well, well I certainly didn't expect this book to be absolutely everything I want from a Wonderland retelling/inspired story . The madcap aesthetic was perfect, the confusion and crazy pell-mell tumble of events, the characters, the dialogue . . . EVERYTHING hit just right for me. I kind of wished this had been a wee bit longer, or was part of a larger series, because I wanted to spend more time in this book , basking in the fun, sci-fi Wonderland vibe it created.

"I've found that such bindings can often make things more interesting. If it makes you feel better, I can take a turn in them afterward."

The introduction of Shadow was the clincher for me on loving this book. He was such a wild, tumultuous character that made the Wonderland aesthetic proud and really held the book together. He lightened up the darker moments, brought a touch of reality to the lighter moments, and really was probably the best character in here. I fell head-over-heels for his mad hatter-eqseue snark AND the fact that he wasn't a Mad Hatter as the love interest?? As much as I love all renditions of that other character, it was certainly fun to have the romance take a different sort of turn in here.

"Because that is how the real world works, Shadow. People die."
"Yes. In the real world, people die. And then they come back—usually angry that they were killed to begin with."

The video game respawn concept of this "world" deserves a mention, if only because it was a great thing and really added to the character interactions and literal stabbing. The idea of people just running around and chopping heads off in annoyance, only for that person to pop up a day or so later to annoy them all over again?? Love it.

"I don't want anything more than I want you right now, but we have some people we need to threaten first."

Finally, the romantic arc was fun, flirty, sweet, and just the right amount of crazy and one of the things I loved second-best about this story. The push-and-pull between them led to a natural development of feelings and then love and, just like in the previous books from these authors, the steamy times were rather good and just wild enough to add a nice sexy depth to all the other aesthetics in here.

Now, even after all the wonderful vibes, the ending fell very very short of all the expectations it had built up. But it wasn't terrible and I loved the rest of the book, so it didn't bother me as much.

And, just because I came across this again in my gif hunt, have one of my fav moments from the Burton Wonderland films as an ending bonus:

So incredibly unique and very imaginative this is a sci-fi retelling of Alice in Wonderland and I bloody adored it. It was just so immersive and terribly clever in its execution such a surreal trip of creativity that totally worked. I’ve never experienced an Alice in wonderland retelling or at least I don’t think I have. I’ve read so many stories It’s entirely possible It’s slipped my mind. No matter this one is definitely going to stick as it was such a well-written entertaining endeavour.

Alice finds herself committed to the Liddell psychiatric hospital after inheriting her father's estate. Her greedy relatives contrive to remove her from the equation and this corrupt facility hides secrets behind its government-approved doors. Now asleep and trapped in a simulation Alice awakens to Wonderland a place where everything is upside down turned around and totally surreal.

This had all of the inhabitants you would expect other patients also trapped and unaware that this reality isn’t real. We have the hatter and a red king who is the antagonist of the story. It’s also here she makes the acquaintance of Shadow who follows a different set of rules, he’s a glitch a ghost able to appear and disappear at will, slightly unhinged an adorable sarcastic fruitcake and he loves to play games, especially with the other inhabitants of wonderland. Shadow a feline-type alien in the vein of the Cheshire Cat (yes this world has aliens) was such an enticing character.

Now all Alice needs to do is convince Shadow that reality isn’t real, defeat the red king, wake up from this waking dream and hopefully escape this alternate reality. Shadow during this is her constant protective guide and Alice is falling deep under his spell.

This was imaginative unique and so much fun. I adored the dynamic between Alice and Shadow and they were adorable in all of their banter together. The intimate scenes were hot and this had plenty of chemistry. I definitely recommend this if you're looking for something different as this is sure to hit the spot. I Love this author team and their books consistently deliver the goods every single time.

I’ve enjoyed several books from this husband/wife duo… hell they made me love a spider… but this one didn’t really work for me. I’ll round up because the writing/world building was good, I just wasn’t in the mood for the manic Alice in Wonderland shenanigans.

I completely agree with another reviewer, this reads like a Alice-retelling/Matrix mashup…. which was unique, but I easily figured it out and was bored a hunk of the time.

Bottom Line- Creative concept, but the pacing was slow… and Alice was a bit of a dud. I kept waiting for her to step up and kick ass, but she pretty much stayed a damsel.

I've read a few Tiffany Roberts books before and really enjoyed them. This one, however, was honestly nowhere near as good as the others.

So, I did love the "Alice meets the Matrix" twist to this. Wonderland as a simulation inside a mental asylum, brilliant! However, I really disliked the outdated and surprisingly sexist tropes in this. I typically love all things Alice, but I absolutely hated that the Alice character in this story is nothing but a damsel in distress and just a pretty prop for Shadow (the Cheshire Cat).

There were hints in several parts of the story that Alice would eventually have her "big hero moment." Disappointingly enough, she never does. Instead, her big, strong cat/man comes to the rescue, as always. Sadly, Alice is nothing but a sexual object for pretty much every male in the story, including the supposed hero.

There is never a point when Alice isn't openly sexualized, told she will be sexually used/raped, and in one part is flat out groped by someone she doesn't want to touch her. Yet she "has" to go along with it, because basically her vagina is bait to trap the bad guys. Nope, nope, nope!

For a book aimed at the female audience I found it to be a little too threaded with toxic tropes to be genuinely likeable.

This idea is so unique! A sci-fi alice in wonderland retelling and I really enjoyed it!
The worldbuilding was fantastic and nothing I‘ve ever read about. The fact that wonderland was not real and the whole thing with the psychiatric asylum was mindblowing.

Tiffany Roberts has won me over with this retelling of Alice in Wonderland. After finishing His Darkest Craving, I felt I needed to give this husband and wife writing duo another chance. Very glad that I gave Escaping Wonderland a go as it was fantastically entertaining.

As stated before, this novel is a dark, sci-fi, reimagining of Alice in Wonderland. I thoroughly enjoy a fun re-telling. I have read several and this is by far one of my favorites. Shadow, a deviously chaotic embodiment of the Cheshire Cat, and Alice, are wrongfully captured and trapped in a ominous, simulated version of Wonderland. Their adventure to defeat the Red King and return to reality is plagued by run-ins with many troublesome, but well-crafted characters in a unforgiving world that seems to be always changing while also, inexplicably, remaining the same. The events that take place during Alice and Shadow's venture are very well written as the cast of characters and world building skills of Roberts successfully creates a version of Wonderland that is tragically disturbing, gloriously dark, and unexpectedly seductive.
The chemistry between Shadow and Alice is fun to follow and at times incredibly, but strangely HOT and completely swoon-worthy. I adore the fact that they get their HEA as it just seemed so well-deserved and satisfying after all they endure while trapped in Wonderland.

3.5 stars. Wow- this was like a psychedelic love story. Got to hand it to these authors: they have vivid imaginations! One of those books that are disturbing yet require finishing- and the Wonderland analogy was very well done.
I admit that plots which involve people trapped by drugs in a virtual world, and helpless in real life - sort of like the Matrix movies, I guess- scare the crap out of me. I was quite tense while reading this, so in that sense, the book was absolutely successful in capturing my interest.
Add some nice characterisation, with the obligatory HEA, and I have to say I enjoyed it. This, despite being creeped out by the setting! Oh, and the sex scenes were pretty good, too 😍
Above all, I loved that this was a very
different Alien romance - weird, wonderful, sexy and fun.

Very descriptive

*WARNING* for adult readers
Although this is a bit wordy for my taste, I still gave it four stars for going the extra mile in describing the setting of "Wonderland". This does have an HEA and is a romance, but has some dark aspects and betrayal in there. It's definitely an interesting take on an old fairytale.

I didn’t think I’d love this story as much as I do, this is a sci - fi, unique twist on an Alice and wonderland re telling.

Alice and Shadow are everything. I absolutely adore him. He is mischievous, quirky, ruthless and devoted all in one. It’s obvious who his character is inspired by and i personally don’t think anyone could have created a character like him - I can’t put into words how much I adore his character because my words can’t do him justice. He is hands down, one of my favourite characters I’ve ever read about. Tiffany and Robert have the power to make you fall in love with any character they create and Shadow definitely owns a special place in my heart. Where as Alice is a completely different character, she’s quieter than Shadow and isn’t as out going but the two of them make the perfect pair and belong together. Separately they were both lost and lonely souls, together they were complete.

This is definitely on the darker side for a Tiffany Roberts book but I think it was written beautifully. I’m not one of the biggest fans when it comes to re tellings, I feel there very hit and miss but this story is without a doubt one of my favourites I’ve ever read in general.

A fun twist to the Alice in Wonderland story!

In this book we have our main character- Alice- who has just suffered the loss of her father, and is finally trying to get her life back on track when burley men bust into her home and drag her out kicking and screaming to an insane asylum.

Not knowing what is going on she is placed into a pod with sharp needles injecting into her, and the last thing she hears is Welcome to Wonderland... as she is thrust into a wild world of virtual reality.

We get some of the familiar characters with a twist- Like the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit, and the Caterpillar. We're introduced to the H- named Shadow (who I believe is a play on the Cheshire Cat?) He is the embodiment of chaos, and is convinced that Alice is really the mad one in Wonderland.

Story spoilers:

So I was a little uncomfortable with all of the sexual harassment and dolly talk, but I got how it fit into the story. The main bad guy, The Red King and his co-horts were cruel and depraved by taking advantage of the people they were meant to help. So while it was a bit graphic at times, that's the point of the story. Its Alice in Wonderland with adult themes, and sometimes violent encounters.

That being said I did really like the writing, and maybe because its based of a very famous story, the world and even new alien characters were easy to visualize and made it a fun experience reading. Also, I did enjoy the romance- aside from the you belong to me talk. That always sparks ownership vibes to me, but it was nice that Shadow did express multiple times that he didn't see Alice that way- and although he was sweet at times-othertimes he was just a big hornball.

"It didn’t matter how long ago it had been, or if it had only been once—he could not stand the thought of another male having her."

At this point Alice is pouring her heart out to him about her lonely life, sad childhood, broken family –and her disappointment in her first time- and all he can think of is 'oh no you slept with someone else but me' What a guy.

But still they were pretty cute/steamy together, and even though it was a quick romance (time wise) I enjoyed it- and was glad that they discussed the struggles the had, and would have in the future because of their time in Wonderland- and for Shadow before he was sent to the asylum.

So if your looking for a fun, cute, and sexy retelling it's on kindle unlimited right now!

Alice and Shadow are everything I didn't know I needed! This retelling of Alice In Wonderland was unique, exciting and fresh. Sci-fi, fantasy and romance collide in the best way. So glad I decided to pick this one up.

this had a strong first half and Alice and Shadow had some fun banter, but I don’t think that the iconic setting of Wonderland was utilized as much as it could've been which was disappointing

I had a very hard time to connect with the heroes and plot. For the first quarter of the book I couldn't understand how all of the Wonderland in the Asylum was working. So I find it difficult to get through this book.

As the fairy tale twist was smart and probably worked brilliant for those who connect with the book.

To those who gave me the suggestion to start reading Tiffany Roberts, thank you!

I found it very difficult to put Escaping Wonderland down. I was in desperate need of knowing what was going to happen next. This story was engaging and romantic, I guess this is might just start an era of reading monster romance books for me.

I think the only negative thing about this story is that it is a standalone story with an incredible series concept. There was so much more potential for Alice and Shadow to have their story extended and this version of Wonderland to be expanded. This all being said, I'm still really pleased with this book and I definitely want to revisit it as a comfort read in the future.

I love cosmic fairytales

Okay I've never truly been a huge Alice in Wonderland fan, but I've become a huge Tiffany Roberts fan since my discovery of the Infinite City and Claimed by an Alien Warrior !💖 so I decided to take a chance and read this cosmic fairytale. Once again these authors did not disappoint! Characters were beautifully written and the world building was awesome . I mean really a psychiatric hospital is the perfect place for Alice and her crazy Wonderland.and I love the twist of a virtual simulation with a crazy cruel evil Doctor in control Shadow a formidable figure who screams Cheshire cat from the minute he's introduced sees Alice when she's dumped into the simulation. He's immediately attracted to her and wants to know everything about her. Alice is a lovely young woman committed to the asylum because her evil step monster wants all of money her father left behind when he died. It's all about the greed. Together these two join forces to find a way out of Wonderland with their sanity intact . Adventure excitement and passion awaits you in Wonderland if you dare. Come join the crazy while talking in love with this disk s fairytale💖

❤️Shadow & Alice ✨

Escaping Wonderland By Tiffany Roberts

SPICE: 🌶 🌶 🌶 🌶 Sexually Explicit

Goodreads: 2.5 rounded to 3 🌟 🌟 🌟

This book was ok. The spice boosted up my rating. For me it lacked character development and passion. Everything felt rushed and not developed, especially the romance. I did like the Sci Fi twist to the story. Not too much to say. I do plan to read their other books soon. I did not like the violence or low key knife play.

This was a fabulous scifi twist on the Alice in Wonderland fairytale. Absolutely loved it.

Alice was headstrong and so understanding with Shadow.

And Shadow was a mysterious, lost soul who just needed someone to believe in him.

And the sex scenes were hot! 🥵🔥

The only thing I would've liked better is if the epilogue had been extended more than two weeks in the future. I totally wanted an epilogue where they had children, with a perfect mix of both Alice and Shadow, where they were telling their children about how to they met and fell in love in Wonderland. That's what I imagined the epilogue being like.

I *really* loved this and the author is a fantastic writer. The only reason I docked a star is because I am really not into aliens/science fiction and I felt a bit disappointed it was not marketed as such. I felt like I got a bit sub-genre duped, but that’s my one and only complaint.

Three stars feel to low but four feels rotor high...

Have you ever been reading a book when suddenly your seeing one of those scenes from maybe a movie or maybe a tv show, where the guy or girl is sitting someone down and saying,”it’s not you. It’s me.”
I after a while kept seeing George from “Seinfeld “ in that diner, doing a scene like that.
You know where this guy or girl might be “ok” but they just aren’t right for you...

Well that how this book left me. I only made it to chapter 14 ,when I put it down and realized I didn’t want to pick it back up...
Now for “Alice in Wonderland “ , I felt a futuristic psychiatric hospital was a great place to go and the whole “ virtual reality” aspect made perfect sense. and from what I could tell the writers were working hard to get the type of complexity needed for this to even begin to ring true correct.
But while I could appreciate that I couldn’t connect w/the characters and Alice just didn’t do anything for me.
My heart hurt foe the broken and struggling Cheshire Cat ( awesome choice for make lead,I n my opinion) as he struggled to understand what “reality “ or “unreality” might be. CC has been lost to the pain he initially suffered plus the VR of “Wonderland” for soo long he’s completely lost any true sense of self . I think they were doing an admirable job there but it just wasn’t something I could get into to.

Soo I don’t I can advise you on this one Dear reader, sorry about that. This is one of those rare times where neither love or hate or even like appear in the game foe me. For once it’s just kinda neural as a back away.
“It’s not you, ( I think) . It’s me. Or at least the me I am now ,at this moment.”
You might be a good one Alice, but you aren’t for me.
Good luck and all the best “Tiffany Roberts” ,I hope we meet again in one of your wonderful “Kracken” books...

Ps. Only three ⭐️ s, is based on my enjoyment levels .

P.s.s. While “Alice” looks pretty good in my opinion,CC does NOT. From the way he’s shadowed and posed etc.
CC looks like an angry dormouse about to sink his hangs into her as he looks at us with almost beast eyes.
I wanted to think of CC as attractive but I shuddered every time I thought of the cover...

A story inspired by Alice in Wonderland with the Cheshire Cat as the love interest?
You got me sold.

This was such a fun ride with all the madness you'd expect from such a story. Shadow, the cat, was funny, mischievous and so damn loveable.

I really really love this story!

Though I had a hard time getting through this book for personal reasons; I really enjoyed it.

Tiffany Roberts, you guys slay me every time. Most retellings of Alice In Wonderland feel really contrived, cliched and forced. This feels very organic and satisfying. The first four chapters were tense and frightening. Past that it was very hard to put down, and I loved every delirious minute of it.

Good books should make you feel and this one has all of the feels.
