Earthbound: Impact

Rate this book
Sixty-six million years ago, our planet was visited by a massive asteroid. It claimed responsibility for the extinction of the dinosaurs and countless species. Just around the corner, a modern-day version of it has come calling. Now, it's our turn. Nowhere near enough time to prepare, we'd been handed down a death sentence.

The day of reckoning was upon us. Nowhere to hide, we witness its final approach. The world cowers in fear. Eyes from around the globe are focused upon Jim Stone. A respected leader, he’s not about to take what the asteroid’s about to dole out lying down, not if he has anything to say about it.

The countdown to the moment of impact continues. We know what's in store for us. There's no stopping it. Countries around the world collide. The world is in turmoil. One man stands head and shoulders above the rest. Jim Stone.

Author's note: An enormous asteroid like the one responsible for the extinction of the dinosaurs will someday visit us, again. Our hope is that it's not in our lifetime. It's a roll of the dice.

Earthbound: Impact closes out the asteroid trilogy with a valiant effort on the part of Jim Stone. It’s a logistical crunch that reminds me of D-Day where ships full of hordes land on an opposite shore. Except that the invasion is due to an entirely different circumstance.

People are on the move in a manner that makes any migration to date look like child’s play. Preparations need to be readied NOW if we’re going to survive. There’s no time to argue over who’s done this to us or which treatment will fight our ills. We will not suffer ignominious characters standing in the White House press room explaining away our destitute state.

It was quite odd reading about people and nations in the midst of a crisis that would make them want to shelter indoors while the world went to hell. I had true empathy for the characters having gone through the protocol myself recently with the coronavirus quarantine. Can anyone image having to do that for generations until the air cleared?

There’s only so much individuals, businesses, and governments can do in a situation like Impact. But millions (billions?) will suffer. While the relatively safe and secure go on with their upended lives as best as they can, they must first accept the fact they have lost something great.

Of course, the chances of asteroid impact is negligible. So, why worry about it? If that is the case, then why worry about anything such as having to fight an impossibly winnable nuclear war? Is it too far-fetched to say that one of those intercontinental ballistic missiles could be used to change the trajectory of a massive, cold rock that will one day eclipse that infinitesimally small probability and come our way?

Earthbound: Impact is Paul Falk’s final book in his Jim Stone Trilogy and continues the story of an impending catastrophe, as an asteroid is on course to collide with Earth. Jim Stone has been recalled from retirement to the US Navy and been promoted to Admiral and put in charge of the San Diego Naval Base.

Jim Stone faces many challenges in dealing with the needs of the refugees on the armada of civilian vessels which are sailing towards San Diego. Fortunately, Jim has struck up a good relationship with the commander of the Chinese PLA Navy which had left its home base and following behind the refugees, had arrived at San Diego. With their assistance Jim has managed to organise the settlement of the refugees and provided them with food and shelter.

Jim has risen to the impossible challenges he had to face and the moral dilemmas that no-one should ever have to face and as the day nears that the asteroid will impact, he is faced with even more difficult challenges. I’m not about to give the plot away but will say that this has been an excellent series which I really enjoyed and can highly recommend. Paul Falk has also left the way open for the story of the post asteroid impact to continue, but we will have to wait and see.

I'd enjoyed parts I and II and was looking forward to reading the conclusion. I was not disappointed. All three books are an excellent look into human behavior in the event of a true crisis. Paul Falk does an excellent job developing his characters and I couldn't help but fee for them along the way. Everyone hopes they'd conduct themselves in an honorable manner during crisis, but how will we ever know until we're in one? I am happy to offer all three books in this trilogy five starts. Very well done.

Jim Stone, the nominated hero of the world organises the navy to sort out what will happen when an asteroid is hurtling towards the other side of the world to the US. I have been looking forward to book three coming out, and it is difficult to say anything in the review without giving away the inevitable - is there an impact? Are we all going to die? A well-written warning about human nature at the peak of global disaster.

I have taken some time from reading with current events, with this being the first book I have finished in over two months, and what a great book to jump back into it. I cannot say much as I do not want to spoil the plot, but when the world needs saving only one man fits the bill. Jim Stone. Helping to organise the navy, he waits alongside mankind for the arrival of the meteorite, and the world that will remain after. Great character development and gripping story. Now more than any other time we think of how quickly our species could end. Don't miss this Earth shattering third installment. A real story of survival!!!!
