Imagine stepping out of your home onto the streets of Boston and seeing inhuman beings walking down the road among the morning crowds of people. That's what Simon Kane sees every day. Fairies, goblins, and other mythical creatures live in our world, and normal humans see them as people like themselves. But Simon is not all human and is plagued by his emerging abilities. Born filthy rich and living off his father's wealth, he became a private investigator, taking only jobs that deal with the supernatural in the hopes of discovering something about who and what he really is.
As an occult expert, the police call him to consult on a case of a mother who believes her baby isn't human. When he arrives and proves to them that the woman is right, he is sent on a path that could lead him to gaining the information he has always sought. But when he gets mixed up in a conflict between magic and supernatural powers, his life expectancy takes a drastic turn for the worse.
Brad Younie writes books mostly about magic in the real world because he loves magic, and lives in the real world. Being an eternal teenager trapped in a man’s body, he owns a collection of swords, wands, and spends way too much time studying these things. A man with many hobbies, he plays guitar, reads books, watches movies, and fences with his swords. But most of all, he weaves tales of magic and mystery that chills to the bone as it makes the heart race.
Simon Kane has a lot of luck. Much of it's good as he's living off of his parent's extreme wealth. A good portion of his luck is bad though, in that mysterious creatures that only Simon can see are out to kill him. Even more alarming is that he may have more in common with these other-worldly beings than he'd like to admit. 'Bad Luck' is a thrill a minute as you ride with Simon through a world where one moment an Ogre might drown you, the next a satellite falls on your head. None of those (and many more) creatures and events keep him from investigating a gruesome case to its shocking conclusion.
Note that I received a free review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Anything less than honest might give me bad luck, too.
I enjoyed the tone of this book. While most occult detective fiction I've read (Felix Castor, Dresden) fall a bit more on a comedic tone, I can appreciate how this book differs. Even though I'm not a huge fan of Simon as a character yet- I'm excited to see him grow.
This is a little different than I usually read. The MC is a private investigator. He also happens to have a little magic on his side. The only problem is he doesn'rt know how to use it. He has a policeman who calls him for anything "weird" that happens and a lot of weird stuff is happening. This is a pretty good book. There is a lot of action. I enjoyed the book and would recommend it.

A private investigator who only accepts cases of the paranormal / supernatural, Simon Kane is an engrossing main character. The story has plenty of well developed secondary characters who all work together to create a hard to put down story. There is a lot of murder and gore, a bit of humor and a well crafted tale. I can't wait for the next installment.

Packed with enough thrills to keep me entertained from beginning to end. This was a great way to start off the series, it absolutely has me interested in reading more of Simon Kane and his fascinating world.
