I think I went into this thinking it was going to be like Dark Shadows.
I was expecting the vampire and the gothic family.

The book delivered the gothic family, but no vampires.

There was so much more inside than vampires.

The book delivers healthy doses of excellent descriptions of gore and insanely eerie events.
I enjoyed it and I can't wait to read part 2!

Im really liking Darcy Coates writing style. Although this wasnt as creepy or scary as Id hoped, it was still a good solid story.

Sophie is 20 years old when her father tells her they have been financially ruined. So when Joseph Argenton asks for her hand in marriage, promising to take care of her family, she accepts. Her father tells her she isnt obligated to do so, but Sophie feels she must. And Joseph Argenton isnt a terrible man. She thinks she could love him one day.

When Joseph brings Sophie

House of Shadows is the first of two gothic mysteries in the Ghosts and Shadows series. The pacing and intensity starts slow and innocent and builds steadily throughout.

We first meet Sophie whose merchant father has just lost nearly everything in a shipping accident. That's where Mr. Argenton comes in - mysterious and very well off, he asks to marry Sophie, in exchange promising to take care of her family's financial issues. Sophie has no choice but to say yes and by doing so agrees to live in

~2.5 stars~

I was intrigued by the "Gothic Horror Romance" genre so I decided to give this one a shot. Here's my breakdown:

The pros:
* Solid writing style
* Offered as a kindleunlimited

The cons:
* Extreme insta-love
* Vague characters
* The storyline execution seemed rushed

Overall, I wasnt impressed with this particular book but I did like the writing style for the most part. I won't be continuing this series, but I would check out more of this writers other work.

'House of Shadows' tells the exceptional story of Sophie. Her father got into financial difficulties, and one of his connections sees his chance. Mr. Argenton asks for Sophie's hand. When she married him, it wasn't because of love. However, she slowly seems to fall for him. On the other hand, she didn't know what she was getting herself into. The Argenton house doesn't seem like the perfect home. It's harsh for her to fit in and understand what is

I've read several of Darcy Coates books before and enjoyed them all immensely. I put this series off though because for some reason I was expecting more of a historical romance story-and there is a little romance but it's much more than that. I would say it's more of a gothic, paranormal horror story and darker than what the cover implies. I guess I should have read the synopsis.

Anyways, it was absolutely fantastic and going on my 10*favorites shelf! I love the gothic setting- the huge, old,

Series: House of Shadows, #1
Ghost Fiction

I'm already familiar with Darcy Coates' books, so I was anxious to read HOUSE OF SHADOWS, one of her earlier works. I must say that I don't often read ghost/horror stories but Darcy Coates has a very good style of writing, vivid imagination, interesting characters, and her stories are not full of gore, so I enjoy her ghost stories very much.

HOUSE OF SHADOWS was intriguing and addictive. At first its slow as we are introduced to the characters and set, but

*** I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review ***

Immediately enjoyed this novel as soon as I started reading. Im on a gothic/ historical kick right now as evidenced by all the Korean historical webtoons Ive read lately, and really found this interesting to read.

The characters werent immediately annoying. The main female lead felt like a human - she is torn between doing the right thing and her suspicions about the family she marries into. She tries to become a part of her in-laws, but

One major problem with this book

There is one major problem with this book, it is simply too short for what it wants to be.

What we have here is a classic, old-fashioned Gothic romance. It includes all of the required elements of that genre. It has the young female protagonist who is forced to marry an older, dark, dangerous man who also happens to be incredibly rich and who lives in a dark forbidding and very large house. And yes, he most certainly does have secrets. In addition there are also

The cheezy cover did not give me high hopes (original cover has since been changed), but I decided to give it a try because the description was super gothic and I just can't say no to that!! I'm extremely impressed, and I must say, judging a book by its cover was silly and kept me from enjoying this series sooner. I'm ashamed of myself, but thankful that I finally caved and read this book.

The "haunting" in the story is fresh, different, imaginative, vivid and terrifying!! This book literally

Horror/paranormal is not a genre I read a lot of, but wow, House of Shadows has definitely made me regret that. I got so engrossed in this book I read it in a day, and still couldn't have enough of it.

Something is so attractive about paranormal mysteries set in mysterious mansions ! House of Shadows completely delivers that, and the ambient creepy mood is so well balanced you can read the book even if you get scared easily. When I started reading it I hadn't realized this was the first book in

Dark, creepy and full of suspense.

This is a very fast paced novel by Darcy Coates full of mystery, suspense and horror. Sophie meets Joseph at the opera one evening and within 24 hours her life has completely changed. Rushed into a marriage of convenience and spirited off to a creepy mansion in the middle of nowhere, Sophie is immediately surrounded by danger. What secrets are the Argenton Family hiding? Why are the staff so silent? What is the strange substance weeping from the walls at night?

Well this one is firmly in the realm of "it was ok", which for me is disappointing. I had to wait a long time to finally get hold of it, and it just wasn't as good as I had hoped. The lore behind the haunting was really neat. I liked that a lot actually. What really brought this down for me was the romance. I liked how it started, but it felt like the 'I love him' realization came out of nowhere and for no reason. They had said all of five words to each other, but suddenly she loves him. Why? If ...more

This contains all the elements of a sixties or seventies gothic novel. First of all, you have the young girl that has hardships at home and in walks the stranger to rescue her. Or does he? He then takes her home with him, usually to a creepy castle or mansion. The mansion is usually filled with strange unwelcoming family members and/or servants. And the house always has secrets. This is a modern gothic of course, which contains all of the above elements with a paranormal twist. There is almost a ...more

Very well written, an interesting plot, and an unexpected payoff/ending that I won't spoil. My main complaint is that I felt the heroine and hero didn't interact often, or significantly, enough to make their declarations of falling in love with one another believable. (They start off as total strangers, and marry very quickly for convenience.) As a result, their relationship comes off as a bit shallow, and based mostly on their respective looks, which I am sure the author didn't intend. Given ...more

What an interesting story with plenty of tense moments that are far from predictable.

One of the reading goals that I set for myself in 2019 was to:
A.) Try to finish the various series I've started and abandoned. OR
B.) Try to read all the books by the various authors I've read and enjoyed. (I know.... impossible haha)

In order to do this I've been spending a lot of time perusing my previously read books and seeing what else the authors have published/do I own any of their other books? One author I noticed I read a couple books by & owned a bunch more was Darcy Coates. SO I've

I'll admit two stars is a very generous rating, but I finished it so... *shrugs*

1) Sophie might be the dumbest heroine ever. I think she's supposed to be good and kind, but she comes across as a doormat who won't even demand answers. If you're that terrified in your home and your husband doesn't give a fuck, I think it's safe to demand answers. She doesn't and also doesn't seem to care much about it. I genuinely don't understand most of her decisions. She also falls in love with Joseph for...

This was a surprisingly good and strange read. I haven't had the pleasure of reading a horror novel such as this in a very long time. I used to consume them when I was a teenager and when I came across it and read the synopsis, I thought: Why not..

Well, it was like the love child of Vincent Price and Barbara Cartland meets Wes Craven. A gothic romance mixed with goosebumps and horror. I hardly could put my kindle down since the chapters were deliciously short and so I rushed through the story

Note to self: Do not start reading a Darcy Coates novel at midnight! For two reasons, I didn't sleep a wink: (1) I could not put this book down, and (2) I was so on edge that I was terrified of what could possibly be lurking in the shadows and couldn't stop listening for the things that go bump in the night.

It begins simply enough: Sophie encounters a dashing stranger at the opera and becomes mesmerized by his alluring eyes. On the surface, Joseph has it all: wealth, charm, and good looks. What

I'm giving House of Shadows four stars simply because it had me turning the pages long after I should have gone to sleep. That's a good sign.
At first the story followed the familiar pattern of young girl marries stranger in order to save her family from poverty and he whisks her away to a large, remote house with a sinister secret. So far so ordinary.
However, the author captured my imagination with the way the story twisted and turned and after that I was unable to put the book down. I liked
