It was a good read. Susie and Braxton met for the first time with him swooping in the save her from two guys who were harassing her. They went back to his place only for her to realize that's he is the brother of the bride and best man for the wedding she's in charge of planning. He is dead set on making sure the wedding doesn't happen while she's determined to get the bride and groom happily married without anything going wrong. Who'll win?
This was a good book, but it wasn't great. I read this book because I saw a tiktok. (I'm sorry to say this, but as usual, most tiktok recommendations let me down). The tiktok was a snippet from the book, a scene where she is trying to stop him from ruining the wedding, so she tricks him into thinking they are going to have sex again and ties him to the headboard of the bed and then runs away to work on the wedding. He couldn't loosen the knots so instead he just breaks the headboard. HE BROKE THE FREAKING HEADBOARD! That convinced me to read this book in a matter of seconds. Unfortunately, it did not live up to what I was expecting. I'm nor saying it was a bad book, it just wasn't mindblowing. There were good and bad things about this book. For starters, it felt a little bland to me. I feel bad for saying that but it's true.
There were small things about the writing. Specifically, the sex scenes. This might just be a personal preference, but there are just certain words I can't read in smut. Here are some parts that I highlighted as an example:
He slides his hand down my pants, inside my panties, and I gasp when his long fingers part my sex and glide over my slick labia
Braxton warms me up, reaching under my dress to cup my sex. He pets two fingers over my petals, and I heat up quickly, my blood pulsing. “Do you always get this wet this quickly,” he asks, “or is this just for me?”
“I want you.”
“Tough.”
Now she looks truly confused. “What?”
“I think you’ve forgotten who’s in control here.”
See, I'd like to think that I'm a girl who is relatively understanding. I get that some people just doesn’t like the word pussy, so if you're not comfortable writing it, that's fine. What really got me was the amount of times this girl's vagina was caller her sex. I feel like there is so much words that could have been used in place, or at the very least, not use 'sex' that much. The last quote I added was just because it made me laugh. Not a laugh in the that was funny type of way though. She told him that she wanted him and homeboy told her she forgot who's in control. My laugh was the 'he really thought he did something' kind of laugh.
With that being said, I also got the give some compliments to the book. The characters might not have had that much chemistry (in my opinion) but they definitely had cute banter. I love when characters know exactly how to respond to other characters and match there energy and I got some that here. So I'm also going to give some examples of that.
“I like you.”
I have to pause for a moment to process his words. “You like me?”
“Yes. I like you.” He spits out the words like an accusation. “I hate everything, but somehow, someway, I like you. I like your…smile. I like how your hair gets frizzy in the morning. I like how you find the silver lining to everything. You tell when I’m being an ass—which would normally irritate the heck out of me—but when you do it, I listen. And it makes me want to be less…I don’t know.” He’s borderline frenetic, raking his fingers through his hair.
I fill in the blanks helpfully. “Less of an ass?”
He drops his arms and turns to me. Sincerely, he says, “I’ve never felt this way before. Ever.”
“I’m very cute. And you like it.”
“I’m never going to hear the end of that, am I?”
I shake my head. “No.”
Context for this next quote. Ace is her ex fiance who left her at the alter
“Hi.” Ace smiles and extends a palm toward Braxton. “Ace Soren. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
Braxton takes Ace’s hand and shakes it. His eyes, however, are locked on Ace, and a flicker of understanding crosses his expression. “You’re Ace?”
A cocky smile draws across Ace’s mouth. “That’s me.”
“The Ace Soren?” Uh-oh. I don’t like the look of that storm brewing behind Braxton’s eyes.
Ace lets out a breathy, albeit somewhat frustrated laugh. “I can give you my autograph after I finish up here.”
“That won’t be necessary.” Braxton pulls up his sleeves. Purposefully, he curls them above his elbows. “I’m going to hit you now.”
“What—?”
Braxton swings his fist into Ace’s face. My hand flies to my mouth, and I let out a short screech.
“My flight leaves tonight at eight,” Susie says. “What about you?”
“Nine thirty.”
“Look at that.” She smiles, but it’s a sad smile. “We just miss each other.”
She’s distracted, looking away, and I tug her hand to pull her focus back to me. “Are you nervous?” I ask.
“Honestly?” Her eyes flicker up to me. “I’m a little worried that we’ll never see each other again. I mean…the wedding is done. We have no reason to.”
I glance back at her and pause at that. “You have my jacket,” I tell her. “I’ll have to come around to pick that up sometime.”
Susie laughs at that and tugs the jacket tighter around her. “True,” she says. “As long as I have something you need.”
“You have my heart. And I’m pretty sure I need that.” The confession leaves my lips effortlessly.
Susie’s eyes grow wide and hopeful as she looks up at me. A smile inches up her lips, and she grazes my chest with her fingertips. “I must be rubbing off on you…the tin man has a heart after all.”
Enough of tiptoeing around what I want. “Hush, Dorothy.” I cup her face in my hand and close my mouth over hers.
I found those moments cute, hot or funny. I was so happy when Braxton punched Ace. I loved the way he gave a warning right before as well. Those parts had me smiling.
I included those quotes in my review so maybe it would help you make a decision if you want to give the book a chance. At the end of the day, not everyone is gonna like what you like. This book may not have been for me, but it's probably someone's favourite.
