This book has a very personal connection for me though I am not adopted. It was given to me to borrow by the granddaughter of the woman who actually ran the maternity home Jody was born in, Julia B. McMillan. My great grandmother also gave up a child through the same maternity home in 1918. I was able to visit with the owners granddaughter several times and talk about her grandmother and what the home was like for the girls who came to live there. While the girls lived there they were treated like they were family and moved about the house and grounds as they pleased. The house is gone now but this story deeply touched me and quieted my soul to know that my great grandma was well taken care of by a caring family. This is a must read for anyone with a connection to the adoption world!

Very interesting and heart-warming book. Jody needed an operation but needed to know her family medical history. She was adopted, so her husband Jerry searched to find her birth family, and the answers needed to save Jody's life. I don't want to give too much away, but her birth mother was a very brave woman, who survived a horrible situation and was able to reconnect with her daughter as well as help save her life.

The book was the inspiration for the TV movie, "Family Of Strangers" (1993) starring Patty Duke and Melissa Gilbert.

I came upon this book while walking my mom around her neighborhood. It was in a free little library and since my best friend since the 6th grade is also named Jody, although spelled Jodi, I had to grab it. I had no clue what it was about. From the very first page I was vested in the story and I read the whole thing in a matter of hours, shedding tears a few times. This book is so well written. If you love stories about the human experiences as I do, you should read this book. Thank you Jerry Hulse for writing it.
