About the author

With a background in journalism and military research, Terence Strong wrote the manuscripts of two action adventure thrillers before WHISPER WHO DARES was snapped up by Hodder & Stoughton and became an instant bestseller in 1982.

That first authentic SAS thriller was followed by three more about different activities of the Special Air Service Regiment.

Those well-researched storylines expanded to cover the exciting and unknown realms of counter-terrorism, espionage, hostage negotiation, ship-hijacking, narcotics, assassination and international affairs.

This book will not to everyone's liking but I gave it 5-stars because the author had researched the subject so thoroughly. The story takes place in war-torn Mozambique and there are two fighting factions (Frelimo and Renamo) while in the middle are the innocent masses, struggling to survive whilst living in abject poverty. Thrown into the mix are some Russians & South Africans as well as Mike, an ex SAS sergeant from Ulster - using Mozambique as a hide-out.
The author uses terminology that only people who were brought up in Southern Africa would recognise and I appreciated that - made it real for me.
This quote from Chapter 8 turned out to become factual. The author was referring to how Harare appeared to be in a time-warp some ten years after Independance: "The economy was in a mess and Mugabe was edging steadily towards a one-party state."
It's rough, it's tough, it's gory, it's bloody. BUT: it is an accurate account of typical events in Southern Africa at the time.

Quite a good yarn, but sadly most of the protaginists die, leaving me feeling that it was a waste of time getting to know them.
