ENEMIES OF DOVES by Shanessa Gluhm is a historical mystery/suspense that spans the lives of two brothers beginning in 1932 Texas while intertwining with one brother’s biological grandson’s search in 1991 for his grandfather told in alternating timelines. The mystery and characters pulled me into the story effortlessly and there was no way I was going to stop reading until “The End”.

This is an addictive read! The story seamlessly flows between two timelines, and I immediately became attached to characters in both story lines. Enemies of Doves is the kind of book you keep thinking about all day. I didn’t want it to end, but I couldn’t wait to find out what happened. This novel reveals deep scars - both physical and emotional – left on the characters in the wake of each other’s decisions. The twists are unpredictable, and the characters are unforgettable. Just finished this book 5 minutes ago and had to rush to login to Goodreads because I CANNOT recommend this book enough for those who love mysteries, thrillers, historical fiction, or romance! It has it all. Multiple twists at the end kept me at the edge of my seat, and the character development and multiple narrators throughout the book helped me relate to all characters that much more. This book deserves more praise, especially as Gluhm's debut. I look forward to reading more from her! 10/10 r ...more

So good! This book is filled with twists and turns that can easily keep you up all night reading, but perhaps more than that, this book tells the heartbreaking story of people who love (and hurt) so very deeply. The characters were all written so well and so honestly, I already miss spending time with them.
The many nods/references Gluhm used from all kinds of great literature throughout the novel was done so well. On numerous occasions, it was exactly what was needed to create rich and beautifu

This book captured me and kept me intrigued wanting to know more from beginning to end. The story crosses between two timelines where Gluhm develops her characters and intertwines their lives to reveal how they fit together and the secrets they hold. The twists and turns feed you bits of information that keep you guessing to the very last word. I couldn't wait to discover their truths, but never wanted the story to end. Makes you want to stay up and read all night! ...more

In less than 320 pages, Shanessa Gluhm’s powerful debut delivers a family saga that captures everything I love about storytelling. With fully formed and fleshed-out characters, a narrative pacing that keeps you hungry for answ

This book held me captive from the beginning until the end.  I loved the span of 6 decades that covered the lives of Clancy, Joel, Lorraine, and Garrison, which gave me the opportunity to get to know each character and how they fit into each other's lives.  I was also drawn into this book because of the location - East Texas, specifically Longview.  I lived for a time in this town and I could imagine this sleepy little town before it grew to the size it is now.

You are going to want to clear your schedules for this one. ”Enemies of Doves” is a captivating story of love, family, secrets, and betrayal. It flows so flawlessly between two timelines tying the story together into a beautiful seamless masterpiece. The characters and their stories are so captivating! Enemies of Doves is the type of novel that keeps you up all night reading, telling yourself "just one more page" until your alarm goes off. Rarely do I not have a book figured out by half way through, but Gluhm's novel kept throwing me for a loop in the best ways. The story is mystery, but is so much more: a true love story, a story about family, lies, truths and sacrifice. The Fitchett's didn't have an easy life growing up, but they took care of each other. Garrison didn't know what he was goin ...more

This is a great suspenseful mystery, with plenty of twists that keep you guessing, the author had me gripped from page one. In 1932, Joel Fitchett wanders into a diner in East Texas, Joel is 12 years old and has obviously been badly beaten, he is also carrying his brother Clancy, who is unconscious. Thirteen years later the two brothers are plagued with horrific memories of that night and Joel has been left physically scared on his face but the two still deny to police that they remember anythin ...more

I haven't shed too many tears while reading in my lifetime, but the stunning twist in this masterful debut novel blindsided me. If you're a fan of brotherhood, sacrificial love, and want to spend an afternoon immersed in a quaint and rural Texas town filled with secrets, pick this novel up. If you're confident in your skills in predicting the ending of every book you read, I wish you luck with this one. I only wish I'd read it more slowly. Well done! ...more

An execrable cheesebomb. At times so implausible as to be laughable, frequently sappy and melodramatic, poorly organized, and about twice as long as it needed to be.

A dual timeline story of sibling rivalry and family secrets. The 1930's, Joel and Clancy Fitchett are holding on to secrets, heartache, and family disfunction. And then there is Lorraine smack in the middle. The 1990's, Garrison Stark is in search of his grandfather, Clancy Fitchett. Hoping to connect with family. Clancy has been missing since the 1940's. What Garrison finds is secrets than span many years. This was an excellent story. A historical mystery full of suspense and twist that I never ...more

The character development was phenomenal. The alternating timelines are always one of my favorite reads and this book is definitely one of my favorites. I was sad to come to the end of the book knowing it would be difficult to find another book to enjoy as much as I enjoyed “Enemies Of Doves.” It will keep you reading and wanting more.

What a page turner!

Families, one of the greatest mysteries out there! As many of us are forced home during these strange times in America, we are finding out just how deep our love and commitments to family truly are. This book captured my attention and held it through the very end with the interesting characters and twisting plot lines. I simply could NOT put it down. I look forward to many MORE from Shanessa Gluhm!

This was the best book I have read in over two years. Shanessa Gluhm is a brilliant writer! The characters and storylines were so well developed that it made me believe I was right in the middle of each page. I very seldom read a book that I cannot figure out how it will end ,but this one literally blew me away!! I did not want it to end but what an ending it was! Well done, Shanessa!!! I am anxiously awaiting your next novel. I am a fan!

I don't typically read mysteries. Most I have read are often entirely predictable and even campy. Enemies of Doves is neither. From the very start you're pulled into the mystery surrounding the Fitchett brothers. Gluhm keeps you guessing until the very end. Her writing is evocative and descriptive, making you feel the sweltering heat of East Texas through the pages. I enjoyed every twist and turn. This story is griping, intriguing, and entertaining, I highly recommend it! ...more

It’s the kind of writing that pulls you in and you feel like your in the book. The characters are rich and I connected with them immediately. This is a gripping story about family, secrets, betrayal, love, sacrifice, but mostly bonds that can’t be broken. The twists are perfect and I couldn’t have guessed how it all unfolded. Bravo Shanessa Gluhm an amazing debut novel!

Once you start this you will find every reason in the world to put off doing anything except finish this book. It was such an easy read and the characters were so real it felt like you were reading stories that could have been your relatives from days gone by. Such a great story line. "That night brought more memories. And if memories weren’t enough, in came the ghosts."

It isn’t often that a mystery can keep readers guessing until its conclusion but Enemies of Doves, the debut novel by author Shanessa Gluhm, not only maintains the suspense but does so with intersecting narratives and timelines, unexpected twists and turns, and a well concealed ending.

The tangled web of family secrets and lies plays out over the span of fifty years. At the core of the story is the bond between

The story sets off in 1932 on a summer night for two brothers, Joel and Clancy Fitchett. Clancy is unconscious and Joel is the older brother carrying him to rescue. They both “don’t remember” what happened but Joel has a permanent reminder in the form of a face scar.
Thirteen years down the line, they’re still experiencing tremors of that ill-fated night as they’ve made a forever pact amongst the two of them. In the middle of a murder investigation, the brothers decide a course of action that cha

5 +++++ Stars. PHENOMENAL

Not sure where to begin! Is it really possible that this is this author's first book?? This shocks me because this book felt like it was written by someone that has many best sellers under their belt.

I have managed to read this in one sitting, it wasn't easy because it's a Saturday and my only day off but once I started I COULD NOT put it down, and honestly with the world on lockdown what else did I have to do besides clean, do laundry,

Absolutely amazing! I fell deep into the novel “Enemies of Doves,” as it surrounded me with excitement, anticipation and even sorrow as the story unfolded. The author, Shanessa Gluhm gave the novel so much care in getting the perfect words on the pages to hold my attention. Enemies of Doves by Shanessa Gluhm is a real surprise package, in the best possible way. This is Ms. Gluhm’s debut novel, so I wasn’t sure what to expect- but the blurb sounded intriguing so I took a chance and jumped right in. What I found was an intricately woven story full of wonderfully detailed and descriptive scenes that spun this story into a real web of intrigue. Full of suspense, family dynamics, secrets, mystery drama, jealousy, deception, regrets, emotion, love, lies, the truth

Enemies of Doves immediately pulls the reader into the mystery surrounding the Fitchett Brothers and kept me intrigued, wanting to know more but not wanting the book to end! It’s a story about two brothers, secrets, betrayals, sacrifices and ultimately love. I came to feel I knew each character and I felt compassion and empathy for each characters plight. The book is full of twists and turns that will have the reader gasping with shock but the surprise ending is never divulged.

This book had me excited from the moment I read the synopsis. I knew it was going to be a good read and I wasn’t let down. I’ve never read a book by Shanessa Gluhm, and I’m so glad I gave this one a go. It was well worded, great plots and even more amazing characters. IF I could give this more than 5 stars I would hands down. In this tale we meet Joel, Clancey, Lorraine, Garrison and Molly.
