Lu Yanjiao (陆妍娇) is a 19-year-old university student who has been living a worry-free life backed by the financial security provided by her father, despite a less than harmonious relationship with him. One day, she realised that her pet parrot went missing, and after a frantic search, found him with her new neighbour downstairs, He Zhuli.
He Zhuli (贺竹沥) is a 21-year-old competitive professional gamer who has risen to the top of the ranking of the popular game 绝地求生 (PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds). Having given up on university, he makes a living from live streaming his game plays and joining competitions, against his father’s wishes. As the top player of this game, He Zhuli’s live streams are immensely popular and he gets mobbed by fans when he gets recognised outside.
An accident with one of He Zhuli’s gaming team mates rendered him unable to compete in the upcoming competition, and Yanjiao ended up becoming a substitute player to make up their team of 4. Despite being an amateur player, Yanjiao is obedient and compliant to commands from the team leader, Zhuli, eventually allowing their team to win the competition.
This novel is very heavy on gaming descriptions, which might be a little tedious if one is not into gaming. However, the author has managed to keep the story interesting and humourous even during descriptions of the competition, where I was kept entertained by the antics of the team members as they communicate with each other about their strategies.
It was relatively clear that He Zhuli likes Lu Yanjiao even as she remains oblivious to his feelings until towards the end of the novel. Rather than the romance, I think it was humour that drives this novel to be entertaining, and I was thoroughly amused and enjoyed reading it.
