In this excellent primer on elections and voting rights, the importance of a single vote is brightly demonstrated in a classroom campaign about where to take their next field trip. In its crisp and sprightly text and its vivid multicultural assemblage of characters, A Vote Is A Powerful Thing shows that conversation, courage, and commitment can drive any campaign toward success. It's a bonus that Callie's campaign leads her class into the wilderness for new discoveries about the beauty and diver ...more

Voting privilege and responsibility is well explained. Stier addresses voting in formal elections and further explains the process in a class election to choose the next field trip.

Mom's Review
As far as election books go, A Vote is a Powerful Thing is one of the most accessible ones I've seen.

A little girl, Callie, learns a bit about voting in school. After learning about elections, Callie's class will vote on the destination for their next field trip. Meanwhile, her grandmother is lobbying for funds to be allocated to the wilderness park in the upcoming election. When the choices for the field trip are revealed to be the wilderness park or a cookie factory, Callie decide

I'll admit - I was a little worried after the first page that this was going to be a history lesson couched in a book. But the lesson - which is told by a class teacher - is intrinsic to the story of a class learning about the history of voting rights. After the well-paced history part (much of which is smartly shown with illustrations or left to back matter), the teacher sets up the experiential learning part: the class will vote to determine their next field trip.

This book teaches kids how a

Callie learns that votes have power when her class votes about which class field trip they should take. Callie campaigns for the wilderness park that might be built over soon, while classmate Lynn campaigns for the cookie factory.

A light take on voting that makes the concept immediately approachable to elementary school kids. While this approach is cute, and contains a good message about activism, there are many kids who feel the direct impact of those more "distant" presidential elections--and

I read this book to classes of second, third, and fourth graders and then went into a discussion of the importance of voting. The characters are children learning about elections and voting by choosing the class’s next field trip. Charming illustrations accompany the text. There is an afterward with further information on elections and voting which includes a descriptions of various facets of elections and a timeline of voting in the United States. I highly recommend “Why Elections are Important ...more

This appealing and nicely-presented book shows students the power of citizenship and making your voice heard by voting. A young girl participates in campaigning for her choice of places to visit for the school field trip, and this ties back to a a ballot measure the adults around her are voting on--a project to preserve the local wilderness park. Young readers are informed that voting is a way to have our voices heard and a way to make sure things we care about, such as the local park, are repre ...more

Recommends it for: 1st - 3rd Grade
Great story about the voting process. Ms. Trask decides to hold an election for where her students will go on a field trip, the Cookie Factory or The Wilderness park. Callie remembers how beautiful The Wilderness Park and wants to share that experience with others. Callie decides to campaign for The Wilderness Park while Lynn campaigns for the Cooke Factory. This cute story follows the girls process in setting up their campaign by planning speeches and creating signs. Highly recommend!

I love this beautiful book about the power and importance of the election/voting process. A class is deciding between 2 different field trips and 2 students decide to campaign for each field trip in an effort to help decide the vote. It is a great introduction to the democratic process and showing children how important their voice and efforts are.

A Vote is A Powerful Thing is an important title that happens to be especially timely, during this presidential election year. It weaves the history of the right to vote alongside Callie’s classroom election, in which the students will decide an issue affecting them all—the class field trip! With bright, accessible illustrations, this title is a winner!

This book gets my vote! It's the perfect introduction to voting and elections for young readers. The story is straightforward and satisfying, and the "All About Voting" section in the back gives a clear explanation of how we vote, who can vote, and the history of voting rights in America. Fun, informative, and timely. ...more

I read this book with my eight-year-old, and it does a truly wonderful job of explaining the importance of voting and the reason for campaigning. The book is very enjoyable to read, easy to digest, and beautifully illustrated.
