I feel bad giving someone's diary one star, but it was not what I expected and I mostly skimmed it.
Louis Riel,an important figure in Canadian history who fought battles, hid, was on the run often, got captured and eventually hung, these are the things in my mind as I picked up his diary. His inner thoughts and feelings on these adventures, escapades, the rough old lifestyle and his fears and goals. A heck of a ride and maybe some juicy secrets here and there.
Instead, this should be titled Louis Riel's Devotional or Prayer Log. His 'diary' is where he wrote out his prayers and about 5% of it is the odd sentence saying 'Saw some redcoats ride by today' and then it's back to praying. He writes out everything he's thankful for or wishes for and it's just page after page of worship. It's nice, it's touching and sweet to see how devoted he was and his prayers for his wife are cute to see. But... there's nothing here about his actual life experiences!
He had visions and heard messages from God,that was interesting, but the editor neglected to let us know if any of the visions or foreshadowing came true.
If you're religious and want to read about the prayers and thoughts of someone from another time, you'll probably love this. But if you wanted the adventure and inner thoughts of Mr Riel, you'd be better off buying a biography of him.
