I have to say, this was such a weird collection of stories. 😂

I was excited when I first came across this because 1) it’s by the creator of Inuyasha, and 2) the words “mermaid” and “horror” IMMEDIATELY made me think of Mira Grant’s Rolling in the Deep series (which, for the record, is some of the best horror world-building I’ve read).

Dark, fantastical manga. It's a must read for fantasy lovers who want to dip into the manga genre.

This horrific collection will have you looking at mermaids a little differently. Our leads needs to hunt down a mermaid to become normal again, but it's not going to be easy. These immortals will go on a fantastic adventure to become mortal and normal again, but there's no way to confirm their success.

Three out of five stars.

Not at all what I expected from a Rumiko Takahashi manga! Instead of her archetypal farcical light romance, this is a violent, dark story about immortality, greed, desire, and the ways in which our desires often hurt the ones we love. The bloody violence was more jarring given her usual soft art style, but once I got past my surprise, this is a very good manga with a nice "be careful what you wish for" theme. No one, even our protagonists, come off as pure and all good, which gave some unexpecte ...more

I reread this for a second time and it was still amazing and wonderful. Some of the best art and stories I've ever come across in a manga.

Mermaid Saga Collector's Edition Volume 1 by Rumiko Takahashi

Before I even tell you what this book is about, I ordered my own copy and per-ordered volume 2. The second that bad boy comes I am rereading this national treasure that is being released in these stunning editions by VIZ because volume 1 was PERFECT. Literally, these storylines were perfect.

Review:’Mermaid Saga’ Collector’s Edition, Vol. 1 is A Supernatural Thrill

Rumiko Takahashi’s classic horror series about mermaid flesh and immortality!

The manga follows Yuta, who became immortal when he unwittingly ate mermaid flesh, and now he seeks a way to become human again. He longs to have a normal life once again where he can one day, die. The world keeps changing and everything and everyone he once knew is mo

I am a big fan of Rumiko Takahashi’s work. Inuyasha and Ranma 1/2 are my favourites of her, so I had to check out this collection of her Mermaid Saga, and I was not disappointed.

Takahashi has an amazing imagination. Her stories blend well with unique ideas, great characters, with intense action and plot. I’m so used to the comedic Ranma series that I forget that she can create some horrifying imagery. Mermaid Saga isn

Thank you to Netgalley and to the the publisher for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

As soon as I saw a manga by Rumiko Takashi I had to hit request. I grew up Ranma 1/2, the first manga I ever read, and from there went on to read Inuyasha and Maison Ikkoku. I adore her work. Mermaid Saga has all the hallmarks of Takashi's other works, that distinctive art style and humour with the character range I've come to expect. However it's definitely a little darker than

Warnings: graphic violence and body horror; cannibalism

Centering on the legend of mermaid's flesh as a path to immortality, the story follows Yuta, who had become an immortal in this manner and wants to revert back to a mortal body. His search for a cure to immortality has taken him all over Japan through the centuries, and during one such search, he comes across a village where a young girl, Mana, is being raised by a household of old women. Rescuing her from them, they both, too, set out into

Thar was fun.
I’ve been very excited for this release since it was announced. Story wise it wasn’t what I was expecting. We meet more immortal people than I thought we would and the main reveals himself as immortal in every story. Which you’d think he want to keep secret so people wouldn’t try to kill him to become immortal themselves.
Anyway. It’s about Yuta who became immortal after eating the flesh of a mermaid. He’s searching for one because rumor has it they can somehow make him mortal again.

Thank you to NetGalley, VIZ Media, and Rumiko Takahashi for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

I really like how VIZ is making nice collector's editions of some of Rumiko Takahashi's older works. I am familiar with Maison Ikkoku, Inuyasha, Ranma 1/2, and of course, I am excited about the new Yasha-Hime anime. I had never heard of her Mermaid Saga manga before though and this story is quite interesting and unexpectedly spooky! While I was expecting some beautiful m

Guess I have to start this review by stating my undying love for Rumiko Takahashi’s craft. She is my favorite mangaka of all times, hands down, no contenders. Her stories and distinct art style are the reason why I fell so hard for manga back when I was a kid, and even now I still find myself going back to her work whenever I’m in a reader’s slump. And every time someone asks me about anything related to manga or anime, Rumiko is the first name that comes out of my mouth. Inuyasha as a manga and ...more

This was not quite what I was expecting, but that's okay- it was better. Japanese folklore about mermaids is different from what Disney tells us; Japanese mermaids are scary, they want to eat human flesh, and they have big jaws full of teeth to do just that. Some of them are like this, anyway- some look human. The legends vary from place to place, and the author mixes in all kinds of different stories here, making a delicious stew of folklore. One things stays the same in the legends- if a human ...more

I recently had an opportunity to review another of Rumiko Takahashi's classic manga. It was cute, a little flighty, light and fun... but it missed the mark for me a bit. Imagine my surprise when I came across Mermaid Saga and found it was nothing like the last title of hers I'd read. Comparatively, it's very dark, a bit moody, a tale of a man wandering the countryside looking for an end to his immortality. It hit the mark for me this time.

In this volume we're treated to multiple stories featuri

I first read Mermaid Saga when I was in high school over a decade ago. My best friend at the time lent it to me, and it really moved me despite its dark, horrific content. Unfortunately it was a rare series to find an English translation of where I lived at the time, so I searched in vain for my own copy for a few years before giving up and moving on with my life. I can't remember why I even thought of it the other day, but I was ecstatic to find out that VIZ Media had recently put out collector ...more

Here's a secret, along with dragons mermaids are one of the few beings that I believe humans could not have created. I mean they must have come from somewhere, right?
I loved this author and the humor they can put in their stories so I was a bit surprised that this story was a bit more on the serious side but I'm not complaining.
The mermaids aren't the sweet looking beings that Disney made them out to be and that makes me vey happy. I'd love to get more mermaid folk lore or myths or I'd happily

My first netgalley ARC borrow. All opinions are my own.

I fell in love with Inuyasha. So when I saw that this was available, I jumped at the chance to read it for both myself and for the library collection.

We already have The Uresei series, which has been rereleased.

A man named Yuta and woman named Mana are special. I won’t say why. For those who read it, you know, and for those who haven’t, you’ll find out!

They are traveling together and end up finding many dark stories that feature the same

The Mermaid Saga is still as chilling to read now as it was 20 years ago when I first read it from it's original English release. It was the first time I ever saw mermaids depicted as anything other than beautiful serene creatures, and the concept of monstrosity lurking beneath struck me even as a young reader. It left a lasting impression and a love of the horror genre especially in graphic novel formats. The depictions of historical Japan were also a great compare and contrast opportunity for ...more

This is an exquisite picaresque-style manga about two immortal humans and the quest for immortality--or monstrosity--granting mermaid flesh that drives the people they continue to encounter and interact with. By turns grotesque horror, full-out tragedy, and (very occasionally) amusing teen dramedy, this collection deftly manages to run the gamut of tones, and Takahashi does it in a seamless way. The art is freaking gorgeous, and the stories are poignant and often moving to the point of tears. Th ...more

Fragmented tales of Yuta, a man who's eaten the flesh of a mermaid and become immortal (a feat that could just as easily kill you or turn you into a monster). Now he searches for a way to undo his curse so he can die peacefully of old age. He meets a girl named Mana, who just recently joined him in the curse and now they're companions.

The stories aren't exactly connected. They're more like episodes of Yuta's life since he's become immortal. They're fun little stories with the overarching theme o

I didn’t even know Rumiko Takahashi had other series other than Yuresei, Ranma, and Inuyasha. So this was a great surprise.

This horror title was very different for this mangaka.

This dark mermaid tale keeps your adrenaline pumping, while also delicately walking that line between horror and suspense. I am a TOTAL WIMP when it comes to all things horror. Thankfully for me, this title wasn't triggering.

In this series, if you eat the flesh of a mermaid, you receive eternal life. What no one tells you, is that if you are not a compatible host for the flesh, you turn into a lost soul, doomed to walk the earth until you a

An incredibly well drawn manga with captivating stories. Each chapter is its own story, some following the main characters Mana and Yuta and some about others who have eaten the flesh of a mermaid. What I loved is the first chapter really gave you a full look into the pros AND cons of eating mermaid flesh and the lengths people will go to in order to obtain it. The drawing style reminds me of the 90's manga I used to read. Soft lines, color blocking, and the mermaid chapter covers are really bea ...more

This series is very different from Rumiko Takahashi's other successful manga that are more comedic, but my children and I were riveted to the story. While focusing on mythology and legends of mermaids (and immortality), the story jumps around in time following the main character. Takahashi's art feels more realistic, perhaps due to the dramatic and tragic stories. There is partial nudity and a great deal of violence, but I would be comfortable with middle grades reading it because it is not expl ...more

This book follows the adventures of Yuta and Mana, two people cursed to live forever after ingested the flesh of a mermaid. Yuta is over 500 years old and wishes to become a normal person again. He finds Mana in a village of mermaids who are about to sacrifice her so they can eat her flesh. Together they escape and travel together. Good stories. Even though I gave it 4 stars I’m not sure if it’s a series I want to continue. Overall I think this is a great book I personally am not 100% gelling with it. The only character I like is Yuta but Mana started growing on me a little towards the end and I wasn’t too fond of the episodic nature of the story so far. I could change how I feel with the second one but as of right now it’s not something I will Pursue passionately.
