A rousing adventure

A brilliant finale to this series, action from start to finish as wizards, dragons and assassins contend for survival or supremacy. I hope there are more adventures in the future

May just be my favourite yet!

I think this may just be my favourite 2 parts of the Dragon Assassin series yet! I was on the verge of an emotional breakdown with all that was going on between Carmen and Corwin. And, with Brax and Thord and Megan... Oh, man. I seriously... Thoroughly enjoyed this omnibus.

I read the three novellas contained in this novel a while ago. I loved the whole Dragon Assassin World. I decided to reread the whole series in these new editions. But I am getting ahead of myself a bit. When I first read these stories back in 2018-2022 and Art had planned to release a shorter story each month for a year, however that did not quite happen. There was however 12 novellas released in this format. Later he rereleased them in Omnibus edition, and then recently I discovered there were only available as novels. The original novellas were:

Twin Fury
Shadow Hunter
Dark Wings
Bitterwaters
Elder Magic
Royal Blood
Hidden Powers
Burning Empire
Old Enemies
Downfall
The Golden Spear
Deathwings

The Novel (omnibus editions break down like this:

Twin Fury
Twin Fury
Shadow Hunter
Dark Wings
Royal Blood
Bitterwaters
Elder Magic
Royal Blood
Burning Empire
Hidden Powers
Burning Empire
Downfall
Old Enemies
Downfall
Deathwings
The Golden Spear
Deathwings

Still later in their evolution Scholastic Canada released some of them in Canada in print format. But back to the volume at hand. The description of this book states:

“The Emperor Sargon is at war. Can a dragon and an assassin stand in his way? Only with the help of a few friends.

Carmen and Brax are searching for the Nameless one, a wizard who can bring people back from the dead. But he is not at all who or what they were expecting and he has goals and plans of his own. Time is short because the emperor is at the gates of Avenus. The final battle will be epic.

Twin Fury - Arthur Slade - Dragon Assassin Book 1This special omnibus edition contains the following episodes:
7. Hidden Powers - He has no name. And he'll bring people back from the dead. But what is this wizard's plan?
8. Burning Empire - The war for empire rages. Will all of Ellos be burned to ashes?

It’s a non-stop young adult adventure from best-selling author Arthur Slade. Perfect for fans of Dragon Riders of Pern, Dragon School, Eragon and The Brindle Dragon series.”

This instalment again is very different than the others to date. It is another excellent piece of writing. In this volume Carmen, Brax, Thord, and Megan have been flying for days. They are on a quest from Brax’s dead master Vecterix. They are flying to the lands in the east, and looking for a man with no mane. And boy ok boy are they in for a surprise. And what a sight they must make. Carmen, riding Brax the dragon, And Thord and Megan on their black swans.

The story is truly epic in a classic fantasy style. When Carmen goes out alone with Nameless, I was doubtful of the outcome. And when … Well to find out you will need to read the book. And it should be noted this was the finale of the original Dragon Assassin series!

The story reminds me of Zelanzy’s Amber books and also a bit like The Last Namsara by Kristen Ciccarelli fans of both will appreciate this new story. This is an excellent fantasy story, by a wonderful writer. Fans of fantasy will really appreciate the craft in the telling of this tale. It is an excellent book and I recommend you pick it up and give it a read! I have already read these stories a few times. A great read in a wonderful series.

Dragon Assassin 7: Hidden Powers
Our stalwart trio and Brax are ready to drop from the skies from hunger and exhaustion when they find themselves surrounded by a flock of dead ravens, forcing them to fly in a particular direction, and then to land.

They find themselves on an island occupied by the Witches and Wizards who managed to escape the clutches of the Assassins sent to capture them. They are tricked into attending a meeting of the Council, convened not to hear the reason they have come there, but to kill them because they are Assassin trained and the occupants of this island do not want anyone to know of their existence.

As great a shock as this is, it is surpassed on discovering that Carmen's brother also made it to this island and is apprentice to the Wizard Gorman. Although he seems changed for the better, he is still Corwin, the traitor that almost killed them all and whose memory or himself Carmen erased with a spell.

Dragon Assassin 8: Burning Empire
What a roller coaster ride. I think I had my heart in my mouth more times for our heroes in Burning Empire than in any of the other Dragon Assassin books.

The 'magics' they had to fight through and especially Emperor Sargon were formidable, not to mention Nameless turning back into Corwin where I thought for sure Carmen would die.

It is always sad to come to the end of a series but the way Dragon Assassin has closed, maybe the author will revisit one day and continue the tale of Carmen and her erstwhile companion, Brax.

On a person note: I have read reviews stating that this is a series for the young only and not gutsy enough for adults to enjoy. I beg to differ. If you still believe in the wonders of magic and have not closed your mind to the possibility of dragons, faeries and leprechauns (after all, they say there is a smidgen of truth in every work of fiction), you will enjoy this series. I am in my sixties and loved it. Happy reading. Annemarie

I hope you have been reading the previous books, because you need to know the backstory on these exciting crew. Carmen (an Assassin with a normal eye and a dragon one), Brax (her one eyed dragon with plenty of sarcastic wit to go around) and their friends/allies (who are interesting to read about too). They have been charged to do what could be an impossible journey, where they will be stretched to breaking. Can they find the man they seek? Will they finally save Brax's sister? And can they survive the dangerous challenges ahead? I loved this series and this ending to this part of their journey, I hope to be seeing some spin offs or hearing more tales about this fascinating world.

fun little read

its a good story, but there isn't a lot of depth to the characters. Maybe I've been spoiled by Tolkien and GRR Martin, lol. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and honestly after just finishing Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series, I think a light read was just what I needed.

If I had not already read it,I would read it as it caught my interest by just looking at the picture.

This was a journey as a reader

What a wonderful gift this author has. I had been struggling through a reading slump and along came Carmen. Sometimes a story ends and you wish there was more but this was a perfect ending. I would love to see this become a movie.

A little slow in parts, but overall a good read. I really liked the ending and the resolution with Braz. Not much else to say after the previous books, except that I was pleased with the way the series ended. Good work for the author.

Really good!

This is episode 7 & 8. This is a series that builds upon itself. It's a clean series and will hold your attention. There are 12 in all, and I intend to read to the end of them.
Be sure to begin with book 1. You won't regret it.

Aside from dragons, birds really are the mvp of this world.

Carmen and co. go visit the wizards and shenanigans ensue, including but not limited to, dealing with the repercussions of being a terrible assassin and not killing an important character at the end of the last book that is responsible for the current war going on

All of these characters are precious and I would die for them. I love how easy this series is to read and it feels like everything and nothing is happening at the same time. The stakes are so incredibly high while also being so unserious.

A great ending to an epic story. The seemingly indestructible emperor is destroying the country and killing armies on his path of destruction. The only answer, Brax and Carmen need to find the Nameless one.

I hate to give spoilers so I'll just leave it at that.
