“The old dog makes me feel sorry for him. The young one makes me feel sorry for myself. Life is short and one bird season lost is one too many.”

Has the air of outdoor elitism that doesn’t quite win over the reader, you get the sense that Proper really believes he is in a league of his own. The author also spends more than required time mulling around the good ole days which plays better with someone who remembers the good ole days.

Still thoroughly enjoyable in parts and pieces.

Great book on what it is to hunt pheasant.
Author shows a genuine love for the chase, the dogs, the guns, and the bird.
Great sections on dogs, shotgun fit and finish, and delicious recipe at the end.

Good enough that I don't want to read any more books about pheasant hunting.
