First Time Knits: Fun Projects to Take You from Beginner to Knitter

Rate this book
This book teaches the aspiring crafter everything you would need to know about knitting in step-by-step projects. By the end of the book, you will have learned all the knitting stitches to follow patterns and make your own creations. Knitter extraordinaire Louise Walker’s mantra is ‘If you can knit, purl, increase and decrease, then you can make anything.’ In this book, she teaches you all the basic techniques you need to know to make the most exciting and achievable knits. Assuming that you’ve never held a needle before, the book introduces you the basics and teaches you new techniques as and when you need them, without overloading you with information. The best thing is that most of the projects use chunky and super chunky yarn, which means that the wool is easy to handle, you can see your stitches more easily and your project will grow quickly! Unlike other knitting books, First Time Knits has links to accessible online video tutorials. As you go through the book, there are also Louise's knitters who work on the same project as you. They tell you their knitting stories and compare their finished knits with you, helping you identify the common mistakes made, why they’ve made them and how to fix them. This knitting book is perfect for crafters who want to make something beautiful quickly, but are intimidated by most knitting patterns. Projects include: Animal phone cosy, bear cup warmer, tiger scarf, whale bottle carrier, turtle coaster, faux taxidermy, bobble hat, hot dog toy, rainbow raglan jumper.

This is easily the best book about knitting I have ever used (and believe me I've used them all!). The projects are interesting, the author takes a friendly and progressive approach and the additional videos are useful for those who can't learn from just pictures. I've always struggled with knitting up until I read this book, and now I've knitted a phone case, 2 scarves and a cup holder. Definitely recommend this for any one learning to knit.

This is by far the best beginner how to knit book I've read. The projects are actually cute and fun - which makes it motivating. The skills build up on each other. The pictures show everything clearly. The idea to include pictures and descriptions of common mistakes is genius. Having a group of beginner knitters to follow along with is also inspired - it really helps to see how other beginners are doing. The tone of the writing is fun and inviting. This book doesn't make the common mistake of showing you step one, and then jumping to step 3 or 4...everything is very clear. Highly recommend if you want to learn how to knit, but don't know where to start.

One of the best beginner knitting books I have come across. It includes a ton of explanations that illuminates all the fine details that tend to derail beginner knitters that other typical knitting books leave out.

I haven't read every single page of this book yet but just a few pages of it singlehandedly got me back into knitting after over a decade of not having the motivation to pick it back up. I had forgotten the basic methods of knitting but the instructions and images in this book are really easy to follow. Overall it's a really nice and pleasant book that is both practically and visually appealing.

I can't remember when I first found this book but it's been several months and I still keep going back to it to learn new techniques.
