There is a quote, a couple chapters from the end of this book, that goes: I couldnt describe what it felt like to be myself, to be nonbinary, but I could read through the stories and decide whether or not they felt like mine.

This one felt like mine.

I received an advance reader copy of this book after a call went out for early readers, since I was a fan of Avis previous book. The initial setup of this ones sort of Neil Gaiman-ish, in that it involves the collision of old-fashioned mythical powers with mundane modern life. The difference is that this is a story written in the here and now, so it involves things like the internet and Stardew Valley, making it intensely relatable to someone my age.

This book was such a moving read for me. Going from fantastical to familiar, Pluralities, or reflected my own nebulous experience of existing outside the gender binary as well as the trans relationship between self and body. Finding trans fiction outside of the "I was born in the wrong body :(" narrative is nearly impossible, and it was refreshing to see trans-ness defined not only with dysphoria, but gender euphoria. I'm not sure how to describe this book, except to say that I enjoyed it, and that it reminded me of sailing (if you have never sailed by yourself, I'm not sure I could make you understand). My gender is about as fluid as a brick, but I was swept away by it anyway, and if that isn't an endorsement I don't know what is.
