A bungled murder.
A ridiculous quest.
And a hero with extremely dodgy credentials.

Christmas 1889. Count Balthazar Jozsef Habsburg‎-Koháry tries to lead a simple life.

Oh, he enjoys a few hobbies.

Collecting ancient Egyptian artifacts. Hunting necromancers with a wire garrote. Impersonating dead Hungarian nobility. Seducing an endless string of women who never suspect the price

Balthazar, an ageless former necromancer is on a quest to rid the world of the evil necromancers that remain.  His latest bounty brings him to Egypt where he quickly dispatches John Mortlake.  However, the easy kill comes with strings attached.  John Mortlake has debts with the djinn and a daughter who absolutely refuses to pay the debts for a father she equally despised.  Balthazar gets waylaid after Mortlakes death by a beautiful woman and ends up on a Nile cruise.  Balthazar's wiles get the b ...more

Balthazar gets to show off his ‘softer’ side, and his vulnerabilities, he is still just a man after all, albeit a very powerful one, and we get to see more of Lucas and his own desires and adventures separate from Balthazar.

The pacing on this is very much kick up the dust and go, which is a huge plus for me, every book she writes, I just fly through.

Though I found this a lot of fun, and loved the lore and mythology used, I think this wasn’t the Balthazar s

Balthazar's Bane is the 6th book in the Gaslamp Gothic and Kat Ross shows no sign of slowing down. This paranormal adventure series includes the previously reviewed on Cats Luv Coffee: A Bad Breed, The Necromancer's Bride, and Dead Ringer. With opulent settings and world traveling, the Gaslamp Gothic series is not one to miss!

When Balthazar kills necromancer John Mortlake, he sets a whole train of chaos into motion. Mortlake, who deservedly met his end though quite untimely, had a daughter and w

This is book six in the Gaslamp Gothic series, though I didn't feel that I had to have read the first 5 books to understand this book. It almost read like a standalone, though I did need to consult reviews of the other books for a couple of pieces of information. I would recommend that readers start from book one, but I felt fine starting at book six. I was so excited to discover this series through this book tour and wow, I am hooked! It's part Victo

While this is the 6th book in the Gaslamp Gothic series, I feel like new readers can easily jump right into this book. Balthazar has been introduced in previous books in the series as a side character, this is his true first story where he is the main character and the mystery is completely new. This very much can stand on it's own, so it is the perfect read for anyone who likes historical fiction with some supernatural flair.

It was really only a matter of time until Balthazar got himself into s

Balthazar's Bane is is a lush adventure novel that doesn't take itself too seriously. It's the second of Kat Ross' Gaslamp Gothic books that I have read (it's actually the sixth in the series) and I'm happy to say that I was just as entertained by this story as I was by my previous read, Dead Ringer. The novels both start in the year 1889, but otherwise they are standones with different characters and very different settings.

Balthazar has been one of my favorite characters since his first appearance (in Blood of The Prophet, I think?) so I couldn't help but cheer at the news of him finally getting his own book and oh boy what a friggin' awesome adventure!! Balthazar's bane is a frantic, emotional and overall terrific roller-coaster, from start to finish.

I've always had a soft spot for Balthazar & Lucas (mis) adventures so much that I'm kinda hoping for a spin-off series with these two as MCs.

Honestly, after this bo

Balthazar’s Bane is the sixth book in the Gaslamp Gothic series by author Kat Ross. The gaslamp Gothic series, was previously known as the Dominion Mystery series, which includes The Daemoniac, The Thirteenth Gate, and Bad Breed (among others). I loved, loved loved the first three books in the series but then I missed books 4 and 5, and I am completely kicking myself for missing them because I always love Kat Ross’ books! Her writing is always so on point and engaging, which these days is one of ...more

Balthazar's Bane is book six in the Gaslamp Gothic series. This one focuses on former necromancer Balthazar and his loyal companion Lucas. The pair are on a mission to take out John Mortlake, a necromancer Balthazar isn't fond of. But his murder doesn't go quite as planned, and it's this misstep that sets off the chain of events that play out throughout the rest of the book.

Balthazar convinces Lucas to take a Nile Cruise, mostly because of a woman who has caught his eye. Unfortunately, the woman

Balthazar's Bane by Kat Ross is sixth in the delightfully dark Gaslamp Gothic series. This book, as the title suggests, focuses on Balthazar and his ward Lucas. When Balthazar kills a necromancer with a debt, and gets tangled up with said necromancer’s daughter, he ends up kidnapped by jinn and taken to a mythical city to work off the necromancer’s debt still owed to the master of the city. In an attempt to win his freedom without turning tricks, Balthazar agrees to enter a contest to retrieve a ...more

This is the 6th book in the series and the first one I have read. When Balthazar kills a necromancer with a debt and gets tangled up with said necromancer’s daughter, he ends up kidnapped by jinn and taken to a mythical city to work off the necromancer’s debt still owed to the master of the city. In an attempt to win his freedom without turning tricks, Balthazar agrees to enter a contest to retrieve a mystical sword.

It must be very frustrating for an author (or the author might take it as a compliment) that something you worked on very hard for weeks or months at a time is devoured (yes, the word is chosen on purpose!) within one day!
I find an analogy with cooking - I might spent a whole day in the kitchen and everything is devoured within an hour! Though if my guests are satisfied and take second or even 3rd servings I take it as a compliment...

Well - for this book, it immediately drew me in and I had to k

I have enjoyed this series, it is a nice continuation of some of the characters from the talisman and the element series. Balthazar puts his life on the line to retrieve his talisman after it is stolen ( you know, the object that allows him to simply take a bit of a person's life force) and he ends up in a contest to retrieve a sword. And naturally if it can go smoothly - it won't. We get to read a little more about Lucas and his loyalty to Balthazar. Again, I have enjoyed not only the series bu ...more

I never would have guessed, back when Balthazar made his first enigmatic appearance in The Midnight Sea, that he would become one of my favourite protagonists out of all these series, but Ross did such an amazing job developing his character that spending a whole book with him here was an absolute treat. This book has all the action, adventure and humour one would expect from Kat, and fans won’t be disappointed. I also think those who are new to her books could enjoy this without having read pre ...more

This is my first book by Kat Ross and I enjoyed it. It was fast paced and full of Egyptian lore. Balthazar is a scoundrel but a great character! I loved all the different artifacts he came across and the lore about djinns and Daevas.

I've always loved to read more than anything in the world, especially so-called genre stories—mysteries, fantasy, sci-fi, thrillers, horror. I like books that take you by the hand and lead you out of the mundane. That ease back the curtain and show you the wondrous and dark and unexpected lurking just around the next corner. I worked in journalism for a long time before I returned to writing ficti ...more
