A titanium snowcapped mountain. A happy little tree made with Van Dyke Brown and Dark Sienna. A majestic, vibrant phthalo blue sky. Bob Ross: My First Book of Colors is an early concept board book featuring various Bob Ross paintings and some of Bob's little quips about each of the thirteen colors he used on his palette in front of TV audiences. Full of real paintings from the iconic artist, this is sure to be a hit for any Bob Ross fan.
Colors include:
Alizarin Crimson Bright Red Cadmium Yellow Hue Dark Sienna Indian Yellow Midnight Black Phthalo Blue Prussian Blue Sap Green Titanium White Van Dyke Brown Yellow Ochre
This is a next-level color book! It takes the basics of color and shows that there are levels, hues, and specifics between different types of the “regular” colors we know. It also ties the colors directly into Ross’s artwork which is a fun touch! It is nice to see a color book that is unlike others.
One of the greatest appeals of Bob Ross is how he speaks about painting and color with his fun phrases and positive outlook, and this book definitely captures the essence of Ross.
While it is a cute idea, this book is executed rather badly. There is too much complex text on the page to work for this age. Also, the colors mentioned are not ever shown very clearly. They are in the illustrations (which are Bob Ross's paintings), but they may be blended in to the point of not being able to tell where they are.
4 stars because Bob Ross and his beautiful paintings
As someone else pointed out, you can't really see where the colors are in the paintings because of blending. But at the same time, think of the amazing color vocabulary children (ahem, my toddler) will have after reading this - alizarin crimson and yellow ochre and sap green!
The more I write about this book the more I realize that I like it. 😂
Quotes from Bob Ross featuring the different colors he used and his paintings.
It tries, and almost succeeds, and being a fun text connecting nature, colors, and the basics of painting. However, limited by what I presume are real quotes, the text doesn't flow. It also would've benefited from a pronunciation guide!
A book definitely for parents to read to kids rather than kids read for themselves. That’s why I like it but also gave it 3 stars because I know my little girl couldn’t read it on her own. I love everything about Bob Ross, and have fallen asleep many nights watching him paint and listening to his soothing voice. I guess a pronunciation guide for the colors would be helpful to some since I see that mentioned in a lot of reviews, but I also don’t understand why you’d buy this book if you weren’t a Bob Ross fan and didn’t already know how to say the color names.
I adore Bob Ross. I have a friend who loves art and is having her first little one this summer, so this is the perfect board book to add to her baby gift. Loved it, brings back so many memories of watching Bob Ross paint on PBS.
Happy little trees and chatty, babbling brooks douse this colorful board book in intriguing landscape replicas of Bob Ross's tranquil paintings. We enjoyed learning our paint colors phthalo blue and yellow ochre with every turn of the page. Highly recommend this one!
My big brother read this to me. He's pretty cool. He thought this book was kind of silly (probably because it's Bob Ross and my mom sings the Bob Ross Remixed song all the time). I sure didn't know colors could have such fancy names! Maybe I'll try painting when I get bigger and Bob Ross can teach me how to use all those neat colors! 👶
I would read this book more for the pretty pictures and folksy Bob Ross tone. The colors are uncommon and not blatantly visible for young readers. However, this could provoke a thoughtful discussion about art and blending. The yellow text is hard to read on the page.

Hello, friends! Our book today is Bob Ross: My First Book of Colors, written by Robb Pearlman and illustrated by Bob Ross, a look at the thirteen signature paint colors of the beloved artist.
“This is your world,” the text begins over a lakeside mountain vista, immediately capturing the soothing timbre and tone of iconic artist Bob Ross. The narrator describes each color – accompanied by a Bob Ross original that showcases it – as though leading the reader through a painting lesson. Titanium White, Alizarin Crimson, Phthalo Blue – each of the thirteen paint colors that Ross favored is brought to life through his work, described with familiar phrases such as “happy little” tree trunks and “it’s just that easy”. After all, this is your world, and you can make it anything you want.
Peaceful and sweet. A love letter to Ross and the fans who grew up with him, a majority of the references may fly over the heads of younger readers. However, for those parents and caregivers who remember Ross so fondly, it’s easy to see how the narration and tone of the book capture his voice and style: soothing, inspiring, and comforting. So while younger readers may not get the same hit of nostalgia, they can still enjoy the lovely colors and serene nature scenes. JJ’s never seen a Bob Ross episode in her life, but she very much enjoyed the artwork and the quietude of the text. The length is perfect for a short storytime, especially for young nature and art lovers. A sweet title that serves as a fine tribute to Ross and his work. Baby Bookworm approved!
