What is wrong with me? Don’t say “everything” I can hear you! Why didn’t I like this book so much?
I think I’m not in a wrong place, I’m at home and it’s not wrong time, it’s around 2 a.m. I finished a book and writing a review (Actually I started it but probably finish it tomorrow and post it another time line and who cares, my timing is still right!) so this is not you’re in the wrong place at the wrong time situation. This is totally you’re holding the wrong book for your taste and you cannot connect with the characters and their heavy dramatic story so the publishers can say that: the reader you’re looking for cannot be reachable at this moment. BIPPP!
I couldn’t enjoy the story but I have to admit: it’s not bad written story, too. So that makes it another Switzerland (oh I missed to ski, I don’t know how to do it but I still miss. Okay, I’m weird!)
So I know the story is so tragic about a couple who has a happy marriage but last six months something is going really wrong. They stopped talking and punishing with each other with silent treatment which is the worse way to harm your relationship than the biggest fights you may ever have. And one day, Frank finds his wife lying on the kitchen floor unconscious. He also sees empty package of sleeping pills on the table.
As they reach the hospital, doctors put her into medical induced coma to assess the damage. Maybe he never sees his wife again. I know it’s so heavy, so heartbreaking, so compelling!
So the book has two different parts: The husband’s part what he keeps to himself throughout the silence treatment and wife’s part: her big confession. Is it too late to correct their mistakes, taking back what they’d done.
I thought that book will make me cry so much and ruin my well-being because I’m really sensitive about the books written about grief, second chances, unsaid words. But unfortunately, I couldn’t relate with the characters. I read their back stories, pasts, their evolving relationship but I felt like a robot when I was doing that. Normally I’m not a heartless bitch! On the contrary, I’m cry baby when I start any emotional readings. But I think the words in this book didn’t reach my heart and characters didn’t leave any impact on me.
This is still emotional, promising reading but as I said before I’m not the right reader for this book.

Never have I read prose so elegantly detailed with an uncommon poignancy of tiny movements that continually plucked at my heartstrings while taunting my inquisitive nature to an unbearable level. The characters were devastatingly fractured, highly idiosyncratic, and oddly captivating. Narrated from a dual POV in two separate sections, each was evocatively written in an arresting style that held me transfixed to my Kindle while growing increasingly fretful and taut with tension. Ms. Greaves is a crafty and cunning wordsmith who kept me ensnared and suspended in an eager and avid state of curiosity. I was engaged, engrossed, and intrigued by the characters, their history, and the prickly and precarious unfolding story of their guarded present. And all this from a debut author. I am in complete and utter awe.

It is odd and very unusual to consider a married couple living together-- that allow 6 months to pass between them without speaking. In Abbie Greaves debut novel “The Silent Treatment” (2020) This is exactly what happened between Professor Frank Hobbs and his wife Maggie. This loving and entirely devoted couple had been married for over 40 years, when Frank found Maggie unconscious and near death in their Oxford home.
After calling an ambulance, Frank consumed with guilt made his way to the hospital. His mind runs through various situations where he “almost” confessed what he was thinking. But, was it too late? Maggie’s prognosis wasn’t good, according to her doctor, and Frank would be lucky if Maggie survived.
In exploring this couple’s marital history, we learn that Frank and Maggie desperately had wanted a child, though complications from miscarriage made pregnancy unlikely. After 15 years had passed, the couple was truly blessed with their daughter Ellie, whom they loved and treasured, and provided her with undivided attention and a happy home. When Ellie was in her teens, an unknown traumatic event happened to her, which caused further unexplained problems as she entered college and young adulthood. Readers are left to guess what may or may not have happened to Ellie— and the impact on her life as a college student.
One thing was clear, that this family had irritating and dysfunctional communication problems, stemming from being overly anxious and sensitive and not wanting to upset anyone! The writing was good enough, the theme of a 6 month silence was intriguing, though not enough to carry the entire novel. It was really tempting not to finish this, listening to the story on Overdrive was helpful. (3*GOOD) **With appreciation to the Seattle Public Library.

There is no doubt that this debut novel is well written...
It just wasn’t a story that I could relate to personally, as I never had the desire to have children.
I was expecting a book about the break down of a relationship but did not realize there would be a strong focus on parenting when I requested this.
Maggie doesn’t feel like she, or her family can be complete, unless she becomes a mother. And, her greatest desire is to not only become a Mom, but to be the best version of a Mom, that a woman can be.
This belief may break the loving bond, that she and her husband, Frank have.
They have LITERALLY not spoken to each other for six months...not a single word.
Now she lies in a hospital bed, and may not wake up again.
Frank has been silent because he has been unable to confess something.
Turns out, Maggie has written down a confession of her own, which Frank has discovered.
The book is told in two parts..Her silence (which is when Frank tells all) and His Silence (which is when Maggie’s confession is found).
Everything will be said, but will it be too late?
A reminder to never let a day go by without saying “I Love You” to those in your life that you love. ❤️

Frank and Maggie have been married for forty years. Haven't spoken for six months. Maggie is at the end of her tether and takes an overdose. She's put I to a coma. They each kept secrets from each other. They didn't share them as they didn't want to hurt each others feelings. Whilst Maggie is in the coma, Frank takes the opportunity to say to Maggie all the things he should have told her before.
This is a love story that has spanned forty years. A story that will tug at your heartstrings and ,if up your spirits. I felt every bit of Maggie's pain and Frank's guilt. We look into relationships, love, guilt and loyalty. Thenstory is beautifully written and thought provoking. Its told from both of their points of view. A really good debut novel.

3.5 Rounded Up
In case you haven't been able to surmise it already from the summary - this is a very sad story. It was a very well written story, but one that caused me to rush through it as quick as possible just to get it over with. It was much too heavy of a read for everything going on right now, but I felt I owed it to the author to provide my feedback.
As previously mentioned, this was very well written. So much so that I found myself crying at many sections throughout the book. Not so much so for the deterioration of the marriage based on terrible communication skills, but for the emotional story of their relationship with their daughter. Being a mother to a daughter who is an only child, the story struck a particular chord of what I fear as a parent today. There were also plenty of times where I found myself internally screaming at both parents. (You'll know what I mean when you read it.)
It's very challenging to write a review of this without revealing too much. What I will say to close this out is that there is reason to hope when all is said and done and there are a lot of important life lessons to be learned from reading this story. Not all stories can be happy. That would make things boring and uninteresting.

Ein emotionales Buch,das so tief geht und die vielschichtigen Gefühlswelten so gut darstellt. Zwischendurch war es schwer die Schwere mit zu tragen aber dadurch war man auch so nah dran....trotz allem aber leicht zu lesen...man fliegt durch die Seiten. Ein absolutes Lesehighlight mit Tränchen am Ende.

Wow, I’m full of emotions after reading this one. The story was crafted with the utmost care; its voice was authentic and tone, genuine.
Frank and Maggie have been happily married for forty years – they know each other inside and out – but, for the last six months Frank has not spoken a single word. It is breaking Maggie. Frank will be forced to find his voice when he finds an unconscious Maggie next to an empty package of sleeping pills. Will he be able to tell Maggie the reason for his silence before its too late?
Broken out in sections, we start with Frank and “His Silence” then hear from Maggie and “Her Silence.” Both sections flash from past to present with ease.
There are parts of Maggie’s story that I felt were speaking to me and the weight of it was felt tremendously, at the same time being lifted off my shoulders (someone hears me, knows me). Frank and Maggie are human; imperfectly the perfect couple. What have they been holding back from each other to get to this point? Will it be too much to save them, save Maggie?
Our bookclub will be discussing this book next month: most of us already finished the book in a few days, whipping through the pages. This is the most excitement I’ve seen over a bookclub book by all the members!
This is author Greaves’ debut novel: I am certainly looking forward to seeing what she writes next!

This is a debut novel and if you are looking for a slow burn marriage novel, this might do it. To my taste it was too slow, an interesting story but structured like a thriller without a reveal that was overly surprising or unique. Too much tell, not enough show - the most exciting part is the only part told in an active voice and that's the very beginning when the wife tries to take her own life after six months of marital silence. Half was in journal entries in italics, which is too much of the book! My eyes! Still I think the author shows promise, solid 3 stars.

I was stoked when I won a copy of
The Silent Treatment
from a Goodreads Giveaway.
I thought the premise was intriguing, yet as I was reading, I realized it was a bit hard to suspend disbelief for.

Frank and Maggie have been married for a long time. When a family tragedy forces Frank to withdraw from the only woman he's ever loved, Maggie takes a drastic step herself that forces her husband to reassess their life together.
Will Frank be able to save Maggie before it's too late?
The readers are introduced to Frank and Maggie through Frank's memories and reminiscences, how they met, how they fell in love, their travails and joys, their sadness and sorrow.
The irony is that it is the longevity of their marriage that makes Frank's sudden silence difficult to believe in.
How can one keep silent from a spouse you've been with for so many years?
Isn't the point of having someone you love so deeply, so much, to be able to talk to someone honestly?
Despite the insight we are given into Frank and Maggie's life, I couldn't connect with them in any way.
I sympathized with them as grieving parents, but I didn't like or dislike them as people.
Also, I thought the narrative would focus on Frank and Maggie as individuals and as partners in their marriage, but it quickly turned into a story about parenting and their only child in the later half of the book.
The author drops piecemeal hints about what happened to their daughter, about why Frank's silence has gone on for half a year, which are teases I didn't appreciate.
The writing is good, and the premise was interesting, but it became a too Lifetime for me at the end.
I will read the author's next book.

In her tremendously moving debut, a novel that pulses with emotional tension, Abbie Greaves masterfully unpicks a history of ordinary lives facing extraordinary challenges. I found it impossible to look away from the relationship at the heart of this novel.

...ob es als "richtiges" Buch auch so gut funktioniert hätte...?
Da bin ich mir gar nicht so sicher, denn die Geschichte selbst ist zwar sehr emotional, aber irgendwie auch ruhig. Die "dramatischeren" Passagen habe ich alle schon sehr früh vorausgeahnt, so gab es inhaltlich keine Überraschungen für mich, aber trotzdem habe ich immer wieder gerne zum Hörbuch gegriffen und wollte vorrangig Frank (später auch Maggie) zuhören. Ihre Geschichte, ihre Schicksale und etwas über ihr Leben erfahren.
Vor allem ist dies aber auch der wunderschönen und bildhaften Sprache der Autorin geschuldet. Sie findet tolle Metaphern und ich konnte mich in die Gefühlswelt (für mich bei den Themen überraschend) gut hineinfühlen.
Da es ein Debütroman ist, werde ich den Namen der Autorin im Hinterkopf behalten und bin gespannt was sie noch schreiben wird.

Ein sehr emotionales Buch auf so vielen unterschiedlichen Ebenen . Ich habe dieses Buch so unheimlich gern gelesen , obwohl es oftmals schwierig war. Zugleich auch nicht, weil es zwischen den Zeilen Liebe und Hoffnung birgt und weil es manchmal eben auch einfach weiter gehen muss 💚💚💚💚💚

Mal ein ganz anderes Thema, dass mir aber extrem unter die Haut ging. Ich habe viel nachdenken müssen, habe Parallelen gezogen und mich oft selbst in Frage gestellt. Die sympathischen Protagonisten haben mit den besten Absichten ganz viel falsch gemacht. Schweres Thema und für zarte Gemüter nicht zwingend was für den November.

Este libro tiene una historia demoledora y el tema me gustó,también los personajes. El principal problema que le encontré era la demora. Se tomó en mi opinión demasiado tiempo explicando lo que se sabía y esto le quitó un poco a la experiencia de lectura.

Atvirai - seniai skaičiau kažką, kas būtų sukėlę tiek daug emocijų. Ir neslėpsiu, ne visos jos buvo teigiamos. Tam gali būti kelios priežastys: aplinkoje matomi atvejai, kai žmonės vieni kitus tarsi baudžia nekalbadieniais, supratimas, kad tik kalbėjimu, o ne tylėjimu išpręsi problemas. Ir ko gero tai, kad pati neturiu vaikų, sumažino ir sumenkino mano suvokimą apie tai, kaip reikėtų aiškintis santykius su paaugliais. Bet kita vertus, juk pati buvau paauglė. Ir suprantu, kad griežtas tėvų žodis dar nepakenkė nei vienam vaikui. Ar neišleidimas į vakarėlį. Ar kišenpinigių apribojimas. Aš tėvų tikrai nenustojau mylėti vien todėl, kad kažkada man kažko neleido. Gal jaučiu kažkokias nuoskaudas, bet ar yra žmonių, kurių tėvai neklydo?
Frenkas ir Megė nesikalba. Pusmetį. Abu jaučiasi dėl kažko kalti, tad vienas kitą baudžia, ir neaišku, nei kuris kurį, nei už ką. Galiausiai Megė neapsikenčia, prigeria vaistų ir atsiduria ligoninėje. Gydytojai moteriai sukelia komą, ji guli patale, o kaltės slegiamas vyras galiausiai ima su ja kalbėti. Pamažu pasakoja jų istoriją, nuo tada, kai susipažino, iki pat to laiko, kai viskas ėmė byrėti, kai džiaugsmą teikę dalykai ėmė nešti daugiau skausmo nei laimės.
Tai labai graži knyga. Apie santykius, švelnumą vienas kitam, taurius jausmus. Ne iš tų kičinių, nes pasakojama jau apie vyresnio amžiaus žmones, kuriuos lyg ir turėtų būti aplenkęs naivumas. Bet ar taip yra? Ar du suaugę žmonės vis tik sugeba priimti adekvačius, protingus sprendimus? Nelabai… skaudėjo širdį skaitant. Ir tikrai dėl daugiau nei vienos priežasties.
Knygoje daug socialinių problemų. Net drįsčiau teigti, jog gerokai daugiau, nei pasirodo iš pirmo žvilgsnio. Juk kone pusę romano mes nežinome kur glūdi problema, kur jos šaknys. O sužinojus nusvyra rankos, imi galvoti, kad tu tai jau šitaip nesielgtum, ar kad darytum visai kitaip. Kaip visada, iš šalies manaisi viską žinąs geriau. Tik jei atsidurtum veikėjų vietoje, kaži kas būtų.
Knygą galėčiau vertinti labai gerai, nes ji graži, jauki. Bet negaliu. Mane siutino, pykdė ir erzino veikėjai. Ir ne iš tos pusės, kur kažkas man tiesiog nepatiko ar neįtiko, bet tiesiog nuoširdžiai manau, kad jų vaiko auklėjimas ir bandymas tvarkytis su problemomis buvo absurdiškas. O kur dar nesikalbėjimas. Rimtai? Suaugę žmonės. Suprantu, skauda. Suvokiu, sunku. Noris kažką kaltinti. Bet pateisinti aš to negaliu.
Daug emocijų, šeimos drama, psichologinės problemos, savižudybė, priklausomybės, savęs žalojimas. Nujaučiu, kad emociškai papurtys daugelį, bet skaityti tikrai verta. Knyga kitokia, bet ta gerąją prasme.

It broaches with sensitivity the complexity of mental health and addiction and the impact it leaves on family and friends. It is a book that will be memorable to me in the years to come.

Megė ir Frenkas - susituokę jau daugelį metų. Visada atrodė, kad jokios nelaimės ir rūpesčiai negali jų išskirti, deja. Jau pusmetį sutuoktiniai vienas kitam neištarė nė žodžio. Vieną dieną, neatlaikiusi psichologinės įtampos, Megė išgeria saują migdomųjų tablečių. Norėdami išgelbėti jos gyvybę, gydytojai jai sukelia dirbtinę komą. Niekas nežino ar moteris dar kada nors prabus. Žinodamas tai, Frenkas supranta, kad metas prabilti...
Kai rinkausi knygas ir skaičiau šios aprašymą, jaučiau, kad bus stipru. Kad bus taip stipru, nenumaniau. Jei reikėtų trumpai apibūdinti „Visas mums duotas laikas“, sakyčiau, kad tai be galo slogi ir tam tikrus, gyvenimiškus apmąstymus į dienos šviesą iškelianti knyga. Seniai beskaičiau kažką panašaus, todėl pradžioje buvo sunku „įsivažiuoti“ į pačią istoriją, į jos pakankamai lėtą tempą. Tačiau kiek vėliau, negalėjau atsitraukti.
Kūrinys man patiko, nepaisant liūdesio ir skaudulio, skaičiau su dideliu entuziazmu. Visą knygos laiką, iki pat pabaigos, kamavo mintys: ar Megė vis dėlto pabus iš komos, ar ne, kadangi supratau, kad tai tokia knyga, kurioje laimingos pabaigos gali ir nebūti. Ar ji pabudo? Tai paliksiu sužinoti patiems skaitytojams.
Skaitant knygos pavadinimą „Visas mums duotas laikas“, iškart norisi manyti, kad laikas - bus labai svarbus šioje knygoje. Taip ir yra. Pati svarbiausia knygos mintis, kurią jutau skaitydama, mano nuomone, yra ta, kad mes nemokame laiko tinkamai įvertinti ir išnaudoti. Pernelyg dažnai manome, kad jo yra neišsenkančios marios, tačiau iš tiesų, laikas - be galo trapus dalykas, prabėgantis stulbinančiu greičiu. Suvokimas apie tai, dažniausiai ateina tuomet, kai nieko nebegalime padaryti, kai nebegalime susigrąžinti to, ką jau praradome. Ar esate susimąstę, kiek daug gražių, širdžiai mielų žodžių neišsakome tiems, kuriuos mylime, kuriuos branginame, tada, kai tam yra tinkamas laikas? Kai tie žmonės yra šalia mūsų? Deja, dažniausiai apie tai pagalvojame tik tada, kai jų jau nebėra.
Kita aktuali tema šioje knygoje - santuoka ir vaikai. Dažnai poros, susituokusius, bet neturinčios vaikų, sulaukia aplinkinių kritikos ir įvairių nuomonių šiuo klausimu. Geriau pagalvojus, ar tik vaikai suteikia pilnatvės jausmą žmonėms, gyvenantiems santuokoje? Ar būtinai kiekviena sutuoktinių pora turi turėti vaikų? Mano nuomone, nebūtinai. Ne visada vaikas gali sutvirtinti santykius, kartais gali įvykti ir priešinga reakcija. Nenorėdama išduoti viso siužeto, nesakysiu, kokia situacija susijusi su vaikais susiklostė pas Megę ir Frenką, bet galiu atskleisti, kad įdomi ir, sakyčiau, labai tikroviška.
Kadangi siužeto metu Megei sukelta dirbtinė koma, ją galime pajausti tik pačioje knygos pradžioje, kai ji ruošiasi nusižudyti, ir vėliau, kai Frenkas skaito jos priešmirtinį laišką, adresuotą būtent jam. Kitaip tariant, knyga rašoma iš Frenko perspektyvos, paliečiant dabartį, o daugiausia - praeitį. Atrodo neįprasta, nes romanas, vien tik iš vyro perspektyvos, nėra labai dažnas atvejis, bet man patiko. Galbūt todėl, kad žavėjausi Frenku kaip asmenybe, o gal dėl to, kad nemačiau didelio skirtumo tarp to ar istoriją pasakoja moteris, ar vyras.
Rekomenduoju, jei mėgstate romanus, kurių puslapiuose beprotiška meilė ir banalus įsimylėjimas nekaraliauja. Jei mėgstate romanus, kuriuose į meilę ir į santykius žiūrima ne vien tik pro rožinius akinius, bet ir pro skausmą, neviltį. Manau, jau aišku, kad tai - nėra romanas, kurį skaitydami atsipalaiduosite ar patys pasijusite geriau, todėl, jei išgyvenate sunkų laikotarpį, nepatarčiau jo skaityti. Mano nuomone, tai stiprus ir lėtas kūrinys iš kurio, norint pasiimti viską, reikia būti tam psichologiškai nusiteikus, įsigilinant į kiekvieną siužeto vingį, tačiau perskaityti - tikrai verta.
„Nes tai ir yra meilė, ar ne? Duoti, nesitikint gauti. Žinoma, visada viliesi sulaukti. Tai maža, brangi, trapi viltis. Gali būti tūkstantį kartų atstumtas, o ji vis dar bus ten, per maža, kad galėtum ją imti ir išmesti.“

Tokios istorijos yra visiškas džiaugsmas mano širdžiai. Jos skaudžiai liūdnos, geliančios, tačiau tokios gražios ir tokios... visiškai apie gyvenimą. Istorija pasakoja jau apie vyresnio amžiaus sutuoktinių porą, pragyvenusią ne vieną dešimtmetį kartu, tačiau jie pusę metų nebesikalba. Kokia to priežastis, privedusi Megę iki saujos migdomųjų tablečių?
Nuo pirmųjų knygos puslapių pasitikęs liūdesys, koja kojon žengia iki pat pabaigos. Ir nors protarpiais gyvenimas suteikia džiaugsmo, tamsumas galutinai nepasitraukia. Knyga pasakoja apie ryšį, apie sudėtingas gyvenimo situacijas, kurios neretai tampa iššūkiu - šeimai, sutuoktiniams, draugams. Čia apstu socialinių problemų, kurios labiausiai išryškėja knygos pabaigoje. Mane labai sužavėjo tai, kaip istorija pasakojama - vyro, nesitraukiančio nuo ligoninės lovos, kurioje gulinti komoje žmona. Kai po pusmečio trukusi tyla turi būti sustabdyta, nes reikia kalbėti. Neslėpsiu, mane kiek erzino pagrindinių veikėjų pasirinkimai. Kaip reaguoti, kaip spręsti problemas, ko apsimesti, kad nematai. Gal aš įsivaizduoju, kad elgčiausi kitaip būdama tokiose situacijose, kartu ir nesikalbėjimas. Atrodo, negalėčiau tiek nuoskaudų ir skaudulių laikyti savo viduje, nes išprotėčiau. Ir nors buvo vietų, kurios lyg ir šypseną ar džiaugsmą kėlė, jos netruko virsti tokiomis, kurios prasiveržia į sielos gelmes ir tampa sudėtingu susiraizgiusių siūlu mazgu, kurį išnarplioti gali tik dviese, o ne atskirai.
Labai skaudi, tačiau tikrai įsimintina knyga. Puikus pasirinkimas mėgstantiems emocionalias ir nepagražintas istorijas apie šeimos problemas, tarpusavio ryšio svarbą ir žodžio galią, nes neišsakyti žodžiai ir lieka tokiais, o juk jie galėtų gydyti. Gal protarpiais kiek prailgo tas laukimas ir autorės vis primenama paslaptis, tačiau tai netrukdė skaitymui. Rekomenduoju!
Nuo pirmųjų knygos puslapių pasitikęs liūdesys, koja kojon žengia iki pat pabaigos. Ir nors protarpiais gyvenimas suteikia džiaugsmo, tamsumas galutinai nepasitraukia. Knyga pasakoja apie ryšį, apie sudėtingas gyvenimo situacijas, kurios neretai tampa iššūkiu - šeimai, sutuoktiniams, draugams. Čia apstu socialinių problemų, kurios labiausiai išryškėja knygos pabaigoje. Mane labai sužavėjo tai, kaip istorija pasakojama - vyro, nesitraukiančio nuo ligoninės lovos, kurioje gulinti komoje žmona. Kai po pusmečio trukusi tyla turi būti sustabdyta, nes reikia kalbėti. A beautiful, tender love story that truly touched my heart.
Frank and Maggie have been been married for over 40 years. They have had their ups and downs, but through it all their love has remained strong and steady. So when Frank suddenly goes silent for 6 months, Maggie is confused, feeling untethered and lost. Hiding in his study, alerted by the fire alarm he finds Maggie collapsed on the floor, an empty bottle of sleeping pills on the table. Frank is frantic and in his hope that Maggie will come out of her coma, Frank is desperate to explain his silence. In turn Maggie leaves her journal to explain herself to Frank. So begins the story of Frank and Maggie and the highs and lows they've experienced together.

"The Silent Treatment" was a decent read, but not very memorable. I didn't really care for the writing style. It was kind of clunky, and the emotion felt forced and melodramatic for my taste. I thought the overall plot was interesting, but I kept going in and out of my ability to fully care for Frank and Maggie. I think this book might be a trigger warning for some, especially those who have suffered from depression and suicidal thoughts. I must admit that parts of this novel felt like a cheesy Lifetime movie. The ending felt predictable and safe considering the tough subject matter. I wanted more depth and intensity from the writing and the characters. A very underwhelming and disappointing read.

kaip sako knygos anotacija - Megė ir Frankas nesikalba jau pusę metų. po 40-ietės santuokos metų. iškart kyla klausimas kaip ir kodėl, taip? o pasirodo čia viskas daug daug giliau.. ir kuo toliau skaitai, tuo labiau klimpsti į tą jų šeimos liūną, kur realiai viskas įvyksta dėl dukros..
man be galo patiko abiejų žmonių išpažintys. skaičiau ir tiesiog mėgavausi knyga nebandydama spėlioti, kas privertė žmones nekalbėti net pusę metų. ir žinokit skaitant nebandant spėlioti - įspūdis tikrai kur kas didesnis.

Ich habe das Buch gestern Abend beendet und es liegt noch immer wie ein Stein auf meiner Brust.
Es hat alles relativ ruhig begonnen, bis auf das einleitende Ereignis, aber als Frank dann bei seiner Erzählung über sein Leben mit Maggie an eine ganz bestimmte Stelle kam, legte sich dieser Stein auf meine Brust und blieb...
Und dann, kurz vor dem Höhepunkt seiner Erzählung, beginnt Maggie mit der ihren und ihrer Sicht auf das gemeinsame Leben.
Den halben Stern Abzug hab ich eigentlich nur vergeben, weil mir beim Ende noch ein bisschen Aufklärung gefehlt hat.

Seit 40 Jahren sind Professor Frank Hobbs und seine Frau Margot verheiratet. Doch seit einem halben Jahr herrscht Schweigen, denn der 67-Jährige spricht kein Wort mehr mit Maggie, obwohl die beiden nach wie vor unter einem Dach leben und Tisch und Bett teilen. Aus Verzweiflung nimmt die ehemalige Krankenschwester eine Überdosis Schlaftabletten und landet im Krankenhaus von Oxford. Wird sie es schaffen? Was hat Frank vor ihr verborgen? Und was wird er sagen, wenn er erfährt, dass sie selbst Geheimnisse hatte?
„Hör mir zu, auch wenn ich schweige“ ist der Debütroman von Abbie Greaves.
Meine Meinung:
Der Roman besteht aus 23 Kapiteln mit einer angenehmen Länge, die von einem Prolog und einem Epilog eingerahmt werden. Zudem ist das Buch in zwei Teile untergliedert: „Ihr Schweigen“ und „Sein Schweigen“. Der erste Teil wird in der Ich-Perspektive aus der Sicht von Frank erzählt. Im Prolog und im zweiten Teil gibt es einen auktorialen Erzähler. Im Epilog, der ein Jahr später spielt, wird eine weitere Perspektive eingenommen. Die häufigen Wechsel in Bezug auf Erzählperspektive und -tempus habe ich als störend und unnötig empfunden.
Sprachlich konnte mich der Roman dagegen durchaus überzeugen. Der Stil ist recht bildhaft und anschaulich. Der Roman ist sehr atmosphärisch und geprägt von interessanten Sprachbildern, wobei in der Ausdrucksweise der Charaktere leider nicht differenziert wird. Der Einstieg hat mir sehr gut gefallen.
Die beiden Protagonisten sind für mich ein Manko des Romans. Sowohl Frank als auch Maggie habe ich als immer seltsamer wahrgenommen, je weiter ich gelesen habe. Der Ehemann ist – vor allem in Hinblick auf sein Alter – sehr introvertiert, unsicher, bisweilen etwas naiv und recht stoffelig. Maggie wird als Gegenpol dargestellt. Sie ist selbstbewusster, lebensfroher, optimistischer und geselliger. Doch auch sie erscheint mir nicht besonders sympathisch. Die beiden blieben mir bis zum Schluss fremd. Ihre Gedanken und Gefühle bringen sie immer wieder zum Ausdruck. Dennoch fiel es mir schwer, ihr Verhalten nachzuvollziehen und mit den Charakteren mitzufühlen.
Anders als der Klappentext vermuten lässt, geht es in der Geschichte um sehr viel mehr als die romantische Liebe. Der Roman ist bedeutend tiefgründiger als erwartet. Der Leser begleitet beide Protagonisten durch ihr gesamtes Leben. So werden beispielsweise eine Fehlgeburt und ungewollte Kinderlosigkeit thematisiert. Im Laufe des Romans treten noch weitere Probleme zutage. Dabei nimmt die Geschichte mehrere Wendungen. Die Frage, welches große Geheimnis Frank mit sich herumträgt, hält die Spannung aufrecht. Darüber hinaus kommen mehrere Lügen und Heimlichtuereien von Maggie zum Vorschein, die die Geschichte ebenfalls kurzweilig machen. Allerdings sind die Enthüllungen für mich nicht immer schlüssig – vor allem angesichts der Tatsache, dass die Protagonisten sich angeblich so sehr lieben. Zudem wirkt das Geschehen oft ziemlich konstruiert und zum Teil übertrieben.
Das reduziert gestaltete Cover trifft meinen Geschmack. Der paradox klingende deutsche Titel weicht stark vom Original („The silent treatment“) ab, ist aber kreativ formuliert.
Mein Fazit:

Nekalbadienis, kuris užsitęsia pusmetį. Ir to pasekmės baisios bei skaudžios. Pripažinsiu, išliejau porą ašarų pradžioje, kai vyras jaučiasi privaląs atskleisti žmonai visas savo paslaptis, nes kitaip abu praras save. Tad ši knyga ir narplioja poros santykius nuo pat pradžių, ieškoma klaidų, išeičių, galimybės pakeisti susidariusią situaciją, nors visi supranta, kad jau per vėlu.
Aplinkiniams tavo santuoka gali pasirodyti tobula, tačiau tiesa žinoma ne kiekvienam. Kartais ir antroji pusė nežino visų tavo paslapčių, neištartų žodžių ar nutylėjimų. Šis romanas netiesiogiai paliečia ir melo bei išdavystės temą. Ar tikrai visada geriau pasakyti visą teisybę, o gal geriau kažką nutylėti norint apsaugoti kitą asmenį? Šie klausimai visada sukelia diskusijų, taip ir knygoje jie nagrinėjami iš skirtingų perspektyvų, konteksto.
Autorė puikiai išlaiko intrigą iki pat knygos pabaigos. Vos tik maniau, kad jau sužinosime viso tylėjimo priežastį, autorė nukreipia kalbą kita linkme. Nukreipia dėmesį nuo svarbiausio dalyko ir taip tik dar labiau sužadina bei išlaiko intrigą. Taip einame su veikėjais per visą jų istoriją, kartais linksmą, džiugią, o kartais tokią skaudžią, kad neapleidžia ir po knygos baigimo.
Kiekvienas galime teigti, kad mes jau tikrai nei vienu atžvilgiu taip nesielgtume. Tikrai netylėtume arba tikrai neištvertume pusmečio tylos. Tačiau čia nėra vieno teisingo atsakymo, vieno pusės. Yra tik dviejų žmonių susikirtę likimai ir kiekvienas kovoja savas kovas, kurios tuo pačiu liečia ir visus jose dalyvaujančius. Todėl čia nerasite tobulų santykių. Pamatysite tikrovę tokią, kokia ji yra, nuo pradžių iki galo.

This was such a heartwarming, and also heartbreaking read.
It follows the story of a married couple, Frank and Maggie, seemingly going about their normal day, the book jumps right in to Maggie preparing the evening meal for her and Frank, it then takes a bit more of a sinister turn, when Maggie just sits down at the kitchen table and starts emptying multiple packets of sleeping pills to take. Frank is unaware of what his wife is doing, and he is upstairs playing solitaire on his computer.
You see, even though Maggie and Frank have been happily married for 40 years, for the last 6 months, they haven't spoken to each other, at all!
When the smoke alarm goes off and doesn't stop, Frank goes to investigate, and finds Maggie slumped in her chair, with the packets of pills beside her.
After being rushed to hospital she is placed into a medically induced coma, and Frank is told that she might not pull through and that he should encourage her to wake up by talking to her.
But what do you say to someone that you haven't spoken to for 6 months?
And so Frank begins to tell Maggie the story of them, how they met, and all that has happened in between, but can he eventually tell her why they stopped taking?
We see Maggie and Frank through both of their eyes, and the story they tell is so beautiful, and heartbreaking, and so cleverly written, I was genuinely invested in their marriage.

"Ciche dni" to dojmująco smutna historia, niezwykle emocjonalna, dotykająca czułych strun, refleksyjna, melancholijna.
Nie do każdego ona dotrze, nie każdy odnajdzie w niej ukryte sedno.
Wydaje mi się, że trzeba mieć już jakiś bagaż życiowych doświadczeń, aby ją docenić, aby do nas przemówiła.
To opowieść o pewnym kochającym się małżeństwie z czterdziestoletnim stażem. Frank i Maggie są zupełnie inni, ale zawsze razem, na dobre i na złe.
Jednak kiedy w ich rodzinie dochodzi do tragedii okazuje się, że zabrakło między mimi czegoś bardzo istotnego - komunikacji.
Miałam wrażenie, że przez cały czas gdzieś się mijali, żyli ze sobą, a jednak oddzielnie.
Te same wydarzenia potrafili przeżywać zupełnie inaczej, ale nigdy nie próbowali ze sobą o tym rozmawiać, nie próbowali wspólnie rozwiązywać problemów. Każde z nich zamknęło się w swoim własnym świecie.
Czy w osobie Franka lub Maggie możemy odnaleźć cząstkę siebie? Czy ich losy dadzą nam do myślenia i na pewne sprawy popatrzymy z boku, bez oceniania, lecz z refleksją?
Komunikacja jest istotą relacji międzyludzkich, kiedy milczysz mało kto jest w stanie cię usłyszeć. Czasem trzeba wykrzyczeć swoje uczucia, swoje troski, zmartwienia i bóle.
Jak często zdarza się, że tracimy coś i żałujemy, że nie potrafiliśmy temu zaradzić, że nie potrafiliśmy mówić, że nie potrafiliśmy pomóc, odmienić biegu wydarzeń, że nie wypowiedzieliśmy słów, które powinny zostać wypowiedziane.
W te ciche dni czasami możemy stracić bardzo wiele, a potem trudno jest to już naprawić i narażamy się na długoletnie cierpienie.
Warto dostrzec osobę, która jest obok nas. Sama "cicha" miłość czasem to za mało.
