When Spider sees his friend Caterpillar sad and sleepy in her little home, he tries using his web spinning skills to create magic scenes to cheer her up. Despite all his tries, Caterpillar goes to sleep – for many days. When she finally wakes up, Caterpillar has a magic trick for him!
The journey from Caterpillar to butterfly has been explored in many, many fiction and non-fiction picture books and Li’s version holds up against them as a celebration of change. And I love Spider’s determination to help his friend. Yang’s illustrations work together with the text in just the right way to make for a grand celebration.
Spider goes to visit their friend Caterpillar, but Caterpillar is all wrapped up in a cocoon and not being very talkative. So Spider tries to impress Caterpillar with a variety of magical tricks performed with their spider silk! None of the tricks seem to entrance Caterpillar, but when enough time passes Caterpillar does a trick of their own and emerges from their cocoon as a butterfly. Whimsical and delightful. A great book about patience and creativity.
