The stories of these missionaries are stories that needed to be told, they are such an encouragement to young people that have chosen to give their lives to share the word of God throughout the world today.

** Received in return for an honest review.

The Greatest Missionary Generation: Inspiring Stories from Around the World showcases biographic highlights from over 30 various missionaries from Canada and the United States from between the 50s to the 70s. This greatest generation, the very same generation that braved the battlefields of Europe and the Islands of the Pacific during World War II, are the generation that struck out and molded the mission field to what it is today. These inspiring stories are from the very missionaries themselves, gathered by Larry Sharp and his wife, Vicki. These biographic snapshots capture the miraculous works of God through the Greatest Missionary Generation, from the discovery of new tribes who had been prepared to receive the Good News to how couples found each other in the jungles of strange new places. These tales are both heart warming and tear jerking as Sharp recounts both triumph and tragedy.

Sharp has gathered quite a collection of first-hand accounts of God’s work in missions during the decades of the 50s, 60s, and 70s. These stories share how Missionaries who grew out of the Great Depression and Second World War faced hardship without complaint, trials and tribulations with courage, and an ever present danger to their lives with faith that God would preserve them for his great work of saving souls. The result of Sharp’s travels throughout North America to gather these stories from this great missionary generation is a text filled with awe-inspiring stories. This book is a wonderful celebration of the works of saints that would have otherwise gone unnoted in this world without Sharp’s care and commitment to making known the wonderful works of God.
While this is a riveting work of biographic snapshots, it is just that. These stories are just snapshots of the lives of these saints who engaged in the world of third world missions for decades. Sharp makes the point that there were many more stories that he and his wife gathered on their travels, and not all could fit. That is an apt way to say how briefly each story is covered. There just is not enough room in one volume to truly capture all that work that these missionaries engaged in. These snapshots will leave the reading wanting to learn more about each missionary and the work accomplished in the various villages throughout the world.

Because each missionary did not work in a silo, but as part of an organization committed to the work of missions, many of the stories cross over. However, these crossovers don’t always fit together well within the stories because each missionary is shared in a separate entry, rather than as a chronological story of the work of missions. Readers should pay close attention if they care to see how the stories fit together.

Overall, this book is useful to anyone with a desire to learn about the Great Missionary Generation and the work they accomplished.

They Changed the World!

Please read this review on my blog: http://bookreadingtic.com/2020/08/21/... Thank you!

Tom Brokaw called them “The Greatest Generation.” They were the ones that lived through The Great Depression and World War II. They experienced deprivation, doing without, hard work, and death. They also had a strong sense of community and faith in God. All of which helped them survive those two difficult events, and change the post-war world. Some of us feel lucky to call them our parents or grandparents.

A few of that group went on to change the world as missionaries, where they faced dangers from man, beast, and the environment. They changed other’s existence both at home and throughout the globe—some even gave up their lives to do so. All to tell the story of Jesus. It is fitting they became known as the Greatest Missionary Generation, and this book contains some of their stories.

For instance:

One missionary “happened” to take a different trail, only to discover a killer had been waiting to waylay him on his usual path.

There were times when their cultures clashed, such as the men that came to church wearing nothing but a gourd and their skin glowing from animal grease.

Or the local men concerned the missionary’s mother had lost her skin when they saw her nylons hanging on the clothesline.

Learn of the missionary’s wife who took one look at the jungle they had landed in, and didn’t want to get out of the little plane they came in.

Feel the heartbreak missionary parents suffered because their children were sent to boarding school.

This 5-star book will enlighten--and sometimes entertain--you about the lives led by people who gave up everything to spread the word about a new life in Christ. I recommend this to all older teens and adults.

This book overall was wonderful! The stories of "regular" people who followed God's call and served Him for long periods of time was absolutely encouraging. I loved reading of people who I had never heard of but yet had such Gospel impact. Some parts of the book I found upsetting. The abuse of children sent to boarding houses was heartbreaking. I know that this was the reality but I felt like it was glossed over. Just note that those chapters may be a trigger for some people.

This book feels more like an encyclopedia of missionaries from the 1950’s onward. It was hard to feel captivated and engaged when about every page and a half it was on to a different individual or couple. It’s great that all this has been recorded, but it it felt a little dull to read.

A lot of stories about missionaries that change the place where they are being sent. I read this thought that this is another business as mission stories, but these are missionary story.
