I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. Koush Hollow is an exciting story about 16-year-old Jenna Ashby. The story is an amazing tale of how her life changes, the challenges she faces, and survival in her mother’s glittering world and exclusive club, the Diamonds and Pearls (all that glitters in this story is definitely not gold). Jenna has tragically lost her dad, and goes to live with her cold-hearted mother. Her mother sets her up with new friends who are meant to get ...more

Thanks Parliament House for the review copy in exchange for an honest review!

When I first heard of this book I was super intrigued by the setting. New Orleans is one of the places in the US I’ve visited (I’m an Aussie!) so I had a frame of reference for the town. I also loved the idea of the magic involved. But this book ends up being unexpected, in the best way. In the blurb Jenna is described as an ‘eco-warrior.’ But then you learn that her mother is a marine biologist that works at t

A big thanks to Parliament House Press for the eARC!

I came for the bayou voodoo, stayed because I kept looking for the mysticism promised in the blurb. And in the end, I was like “Where?”

Meet the main character, Jennifer “Jenna” Crossland Ashby, whose every information – from name to appearance to her interest in science – must be repeated every 5 pages for anything in the story to make sense. She moves back to Koush Hollow where every woman in town would kill to be a part of the Diamonds & Pear

Recommends it for: young adult, the south, voodoo, magic, fantasy
Koush Hollow takes me back to one of my most favorite places - Louisiana. I love books that revolve around the bayou, folklore, voodoo, and witchcraft - this book delivers on all three counts. There wasn't an overabundant amount of world-building which wasn't an issue for me but it could be for someone who has not been to Louisiana (or somewhere similar). I loved that this book featured one of my favorite things from Louisiana - Lake Pontchartrain - the Causeway that crosses it was an experience ...more

I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review. I could not put this book down. It was enthralling from beginning to end. Jenna, a sixteen-year-old eco warrior, has suffered a tragic loss and must move to the haunting town of Koush Hollow, a New Orleans suburb, to live with her socialite, corporate ladder-climbing mother.

Strange things start happening upon her arrival. She runs into the mysterious Mama Ismay, a Voodoo woman who is one of many people hiding secrets in town. She notices

Koush Hollow surprised me and disappointed me at the same time. Knowing that this story was taking place in Louisiana with some of the characters being voodoo priestesses, I expected more of that southern gothic mystic vibe. Unfortunately I was left wanting in that department. What I was pleasantly surprised with, was the environmental story and the sense of vengeance I was left with at the end of the book. Jenna was an interesting main character, who is in a severe depressive state when we firs ...more

Jenna’s moved back in with her mother in the wake of her father’s death. Koush Hollow is a place she’s been away from for over a decade, and it’s nothing and everything like she remembered. She doesn’t fit in here, and her mother is trying her hardest to mold her into the daughter she expects, the daughter the town expects. She will belong to the elite Diamonds and Pearls, even if they conflict with her personal beliefs.

While I think the book could use a little editing on some minor things, I e
