A feminist-tinged middle grade fantasy about finding your voice and the magical power that exist in storytelling.

Girls are forbidden to practice story magic. Only bad things happen when they do. Everyone knows this, but that doesn't stop twelve-year-old Kaya A'Dor from learning the basics from her older brother Hob. The trick is to sense a listener, one of the magical bein

I wanted much more from this book.
I was really interested in the book description but when I actually read this one, it surprised me. It is darker and heavily based on gender discrimination. I was expecting more magic and spells. I wanted more magic while reading this. The main protagonist, Kaya, is a 12 year old girl living with her brother who is years older to her. I just didn't like their sibling chemistry. It was somewhat intimidating and not the ideal kind you would want it to be. But this

Every once and awhile something in the Middle Grade genre will sound good and I’ll give it a try.  It isn’t a genre I regularly read but there are some gems to be found in.

Story Magic is the tale of a 12-year-old girl who lost her parents and has lived with her brother for the last few years.  Kaya is lonely and spends most of her

I didn’t have very high expectations going into this book. But it totally surprised me. I thougth it was more a childish story about a girl telling magical stories. But it was so much more than that. It was a story about a 12 year old poor girl, with a brother who’s always working and isn’t really nice to her. To impress her brother she uses story magic, but that wouldn’t even help. Hob is the kind of brother that takes care of you, but not more than that, and he has a few big secrets. I didn’t ...more

"I used story magic today. I sensed a listener the way you taught me to, and I told it a story about a hero who made the sun rise."

Thank you Netgalley for providing me with an arc!

Let me start by saying that I know I'm not technically the age group for this book. It's a middle-grade. However, usually I tend to enjoy Middle Grades a ton. Some of my all time favourite books came from this genre and when I read the synopsis for the book I was immediately hooked. That said I had

This story is adorable! The concept of storytelling for magic was so intriguing and I wasn't disappointed. This book grabbed my attention because of my two young daughters and I cannot wait to share it with them. Following Kaya and seeing her overcome obstacles and those who are against her and to even take her own stand when it would have been easier to

After a rocky start, I found myself enjoying this book.
The plot was a slower one, full of more lyrical wording and details. I really felt like I knew the world where Kaya lived and all the customs and traditions that were associated with the people. It was really nice to see Kaya as she found her family and their interactions were so moving. I could just see the love between Kaya and her aunt.
Now, about that rocky start. I felt that there was too much of a focus on what Kaya could and could not

I liked this, but it didn’t completely stand out for me, I think because I didn’t really like some of the characters it was hard to connect or empathise, it felt a bit slow but it did pick up towards the end of the story and improved a lot and got far more interesting. I don’t often read middle grade and although a nice read, wasn’t sure some of the themes or villains were really middle grade, a nice read, but not memorable for me.

Story Magic was a magical book. But it felt a bit repetitive after a while. Some would love the growth of the character and mini stories more than me, I am sure.

Story Magic is about Kaya, and how her brother, who was illegally teaching her how to do story magic (people not in a special guild or is a woman are not allowed to learn or perform it), gets arrested for something not entirely certain yet. Kaya sets out to save her brother with only her wits and the help of magic.

Story Magic by Laurel Gale has one of the more unique magical systems I’ve read about in a long while. In this world, spells are cast by calling upon invisible creatures known as “listeners” and enticing them to use their powers in exchange for a story. The “words” to the spells are generally a single line, in the form of a request, pulled from the story itself. It’s a novel approach to magic that I really enjoyed, and I found the way this society views stories in general to be fascinating as we ...more

When I grabbed Story magic I expected a quick cute read perfect for Middle Grade readers and it didn’t disappoint. Laurel Gale weaves an interesting story that follows a kind of magic I don’t think I’ve seen in a novel before. The characters themselves don’t have any magic but the stories they tell bring magic to them because of the Listeners. It does have some aspects of the story that are in

While this story was cute, I wanted more from it. I liked following Kaya on her journey and watching her grow and learn, but I can't help but feel a bit let down by this one. The ending of the story felt way too short; things happened very quickly with little time to actually have things play out. I know this is for a younger audience, but I think they could handle having the story be a little bit longer.

I really enjoyed the magical elements of this. The idea of having these spirits that will h

As an adult I would give this 3 stars because I feel that it there are bits that just need tidying up.

However, this is a children’s book (despite the darker theme of murder and hidden blood stained clothes) and so I will rate it accordingly.

I felt that the idea behind the magic in this book was unique and the idea that girls were told not to perform magic but the main character does shows that girls can do what guys can do which is a great subliminal theme.

I liked the world building as I felt i

Stories are magical. For Kaya, they are magic. With story magic, almost anything is possible. You just have to make sure you can sense a Listener, tell it a story and tell it what you want.
