Filled with beautiful, full-page illustrations, this well-written, fun-filled book of guided tours is one that will be enjoyed by readers, explorers, and travelers of all ages, children through adults!

Before readers visit their first monument, they are given information about what lies ahead. Complete with the name of the location, a map for reference, tips for travel, and the types of places included throughout, the table of contents is the “homebase” of the book. Teachers and parents will want to refer to this information before each tour and use it to guide their readers during their travels. Keeping readers engaged is key, which is why I appreciate the brief, yet thorough explanations. I especially love that all of the fifteen locations are labeled on one, eye-catching map, making it easy to see where they have been, where they are going next, and where each place is in relation to one another.

As readers make their way through the book, they will find the formatting of the tours to be very helpful, especially those using this book in an educational setting. Four pages are dedicated to each location. The first two pages include a full two-page illustration of the area, along with an informative paragraph about the monument or landmark they will be visiting, while the second two pages include smaller illustrations for each of the topics covered during their trip. The topics are my absolute favorite part of the book! These topics for each location include: Enter and Be Amazed, The Word to Know, Pack Your Bag, Tell Me a Story, Wow!, Meet.., and Look Up Close. As a teacher, the consistent set-up for each of the locations is appreciated more than you know! Not only does it make my planning easier, but it also allows for easier reading and better absorption of the content. This is especially beneficial to struggling readers because they can focus on what’s important in an organized, visually-appealing manner, while advancing their skills and developing a love for reading.

Without hesitation, I give a full 5 out of 5 stars to Amazing Places, written by Miralda Colombo, illustrated by Beatrice Cerocchi, and published by Barefoot Books. Each of the tours is an educational, adventurous journey filled with exploration and discovery. Readers of all ages are sure to stay fully engaged from the time they take-off to the time they land!

Armchair traveling in the nick of time!

Readers are treated to fifteen amazing man-made wonders to see from around the world in this oversized browser, some well-known such as the Colosseum, Great Wall of China, and Parthenon, while others are less-familiar such as Basílica de la Sagrada Família, Neuschwanstein Castle, and Angkor Wat. Each place is given four pages of information, the first two-page spread is the site itself with a paragraph overview. With the turn of the page, readers will find Armchair traveling in the nick of time!

With the turn of the page, readers will find more detail in several smaller boxes: "Enter and Be Amazed" breaks it down to talk about what you will see if you visit; "The Word to Know" is one a vocabulary word unique to that place; "Pack Your Bag" tells of what you would need/want to have when exploring this place; "Look Up Close" offers a unique fact revealed with a close inspection; "Tell Me a Story" is an anecdote that a tour guide might give; "Wow!" is one amazing thing about this site; and "Meet ___" is an anecdote about the builder/designer/inhabitants.

The book opens with a map of the world, "Tips for Travel", and a glossary of the types of paces described to give "travelers" a perspective and background. Illustrations by Beatrice Cerocchi were rendered in gouache and pastels. They are colorful, can be whimsical, and appealing.

I found it interesting to see that none of the sites are in the United States. This is not bad, rather it is good to show that there are fantastic places to see/visit in other countries in the world. My biggest quibble is the order in which these are presented. They hop here, there, and yonder, zigging east and then zagging west. This leads to a very disjointed and mis-orienting trip. I would have found it more intriguing to have had a starting place and work your way either east or west from them as if the reader was taking a "tour of the world".

While we have seen this type of browsing travel book before, this offers a fresh perspective with different information and includes a few more obscure/less-visited sites. It would be a nice update to this area of a collection.

AMAZING PLACES is a delightful exploration of 15 manmade wonders, including the Taj Mahal, pyramids, and Moai (Easter Island). The book features information and fun facts about each place plus plenty of color and illustrations of the places and details. Amazing Places was gifted to be by author Colombo, illustrator Beatrice Cerocchi, and Barefoot Books Publishers. The "Ready to Go?" allows the reader to easily determine where to start his/her adventure! The author chooses places throughout the world except for North America. Additionally, the author defines vocabulary related to the places or monuments described throughout the book.
