4.5 stars When I discovered that Ash was getting his own book, I was positively thrilled. I fell in love with this rocker when he was first introduced in this author’s Dirty series and my adoration towards him continued to grow with each scene and book he was written into. The poor playboy rocker was always falling in love, but never being loved in return or in the way that he deserved. I just knew what whoever he ended up with, male, female, or both, would be special, but I also knew it wouldn’t be an easy road either.
Ashley Player is literally a hot mess in the he is hot, gorgeous actually, and he is falling apart. He has survived multiple heartbreaks, the break up of his band, and is coping with it all with drinking and breakup parties (seriously, I love the idea of a breakup party). He is surly at times, but really, he is just someone who loves and needs to be loved equally in return. How could I not consider this bad boy to be one of my favorite rockers?
Danica is caring. Almost too caring according to her sister. She tends to put others before her to the extent that sometimes she puts them ahead of her own desires. That being said, I wouldn’t consider her a doormat or wilting flower and I love that she is so kind hearted - that she isn’t spoiled or self-absorbed. She truly wants to know and understand Ashley and she loves him with her entire being.
I found Hot Mess to be quite entertaining. It has a bit of humor - oh goodness the zipper incident and the tattoo! - and some very hot scenes between Ash and Danica. I really liked how this book wasn’t just about their relationship, but it also incorporated the formation of Ash’s Superband and what all went into it. It was also great seeing all of the band members and their significant others from Dirty. My only issue with the book was that it was rather long. I wouldn’t say there was any one particular part that dragged because it did move at a good pace, but I do feel like a lot more happened in the last third of the book and perhaps it could have been shorter.
Hot Mess is the first book in the Player series and it can, in theory, be read as a standalone - you will not be lost if you haven’t read this author’s other books. However, I do recommend reading the Dirty series first, especially Dirty Like Dylan to get the full experience. This rockstar romance fully lived up to my expectations which I had unintentionally set pretty high. Ash continues to remain as one of my favorite fictional rockstars and I am excited to see where this author takes us next. I received an early complimentary copy of this romance all thoughts are my own.
