A thrilling story of love, jealousy, violence and revenge told in a no holds barred style that's definitely for adults only, Kat takes the reader on an action-packed journey into the world of personal security and the underworld of assassination. You won't have read anything quite like this before!
In the 1970's, three boys from the wrong side of Glasgow formed an unbreakable friendship. One little brother tagged along for the ride. Decades later, he and the remaining Musketeer have the opportunity to set things right: to give a girl called Kat Farthing the chance of a better life.
A gifted martial artist and long-time carer to her debt-ridden, alcoholic mother, Kat's had to grow up fast. She got her first black belt at ten and her first job at eleven. She didn't have a lot of time for school. When she’s eighteen, she defends herself from a sexual predator and lands the chance of a better life… and a vicious, vindictive enemy who’ll stop at nothing to keep her down. But he hasn’t come across a woman like Kat before. Strong, sexy, loyal and caring, she's one of a kind.
**ADULTS ONLY: contains strong language, sex and violence**
I should probably have listened to my instincts and skipped this frankly implausible tale, about a teenage girl who is smart, attractive and a black-belt martial artist with 34E breasts.
All told, sadly, this book turned out to be a bit of a dog. I guess the cover is representative enough, after all.
It is a well written book, but, honestly, if I had known of the brutality it contained, I would never had started it, but once I did and got into it, my curiosity got the best of me and I finished it, though I had to push myself to read it, whereas I normally read at least a book a day. One of the major things that stuck in my craw, was that Kat could go with Black and kill people she did not know and who had done nothing to her, but, when she had Alex in a position where she could exact justice, she did not. And the whole bit about what it was going to be like for him in prison is not necessarily feasible, because he had money, and when you have money, prison is not quite as bad as it should be. Unfortunately, money always talks. Did she really feel that humiliating him in public and getting him sent off to prison made up for him making her mother a quadriplegic and the pain, torture and humiliation he foisted on her? Not in my book. If it was me, I would have given him a taste of the nunchucks anally and perhaps let him have a taste of a penis in his mouth (maybe his own). And this from someone who is not a violent person and is normally opposed to violence, but there is a limit to everyone's endurance. As she and the members of Black knew how to make a person "disappear", that would have taken care of any residual residue. But it would appear that our kick-ass idol turned out to have feet of clay. And as for Connor, maybe he was blind to Alex's true nature, but he certainly was given enough evidence of what he really was. What did he need, someone to bore a hole and drop a note. As to Alex threatening Kat and Connor - give me a break - Connor owned MPS and Black and just one word from him would have quickly sealed Alex's fate. But he allowed Kat to suffer through Alex's machinations and the most he ever did was suspend him for 3 months. Spare me. Needless to say, I will not be reading any further K.L. Macrae books.
K. L. MacRae is an author I've never heard of but I received my copy of the book from a review group on Facebook, thank you TBC, in return for an honest, unbiased review. Can I just say it's an author I'm hoping to read much more from in the future, one of the easiest 5 star reviews I've given. Kat, from the title is a woman, and I say woman but its so easy to forget at the start of the book that she's a teenager fighting to keep a roof over the heads of herself and her alcoholic mother, pay off the loan sharks and stay even a little bit sane. She's had one dead end job after another since 11 and when she looses her present one the only option she finds available is dancing in a lap dancing club. Of course things don't go smoothly but sometimes a good thing springs from a bad experience. I love the character of Kat, she's brave, feisty and prepared to do anything she has to for the ones she loves. I'd love to think I had just a little of her determination if facing the obstacles she does. It's not all bad for her, she meets her soul mate in an unexpected place but even that doesn't run smoothly but do these things ever. Kat may be a young girl but having become a black belt in taekwondo at the age of 11 she's also not one to be messed with. She has a strong moral compass and is certainly not someone to get on the wrong side of as several of the characters in the book discover. I always find it hard to write reviews for really good or really bad books as I want to go into detail about why I loved or didn't love it but I would hate to spoil it for others by letting something slip re the plot etc. Just believe me when I say this is a great book of overcoming difficulties, loyalty, love and mostly revenge, beware though, it's also a book full of violence but it's certainly not gratuitous. I loved every page and read it in one sitting, really pleased to see another Kat book is in the pipeline. Its also interesting to read that K. L. MacRae also writes as Karen MacRae, these books being of the fantasy genre, another of my favourites, so I'm going to read those too, they sound really good. Again thanks to TBC for introducing me to another great author.
I think this was my favorite book of 2019, and having read just under 500 of them thats saying something! This was one of those rare books that even being outside of my preferred genre, sucked me in and came alive and even two weeks and two rereads later still stays on my mind. This is the epitome of a strong heroine who plows her way through to how her moral compass steers her, through vast peril and Machiavellian intrigue. I was blown away by this story and very much look foward to other works by this author!
A young woman, from the poor side of town, black belt at 10, takes care of her alcoholic mother and the loan shark debts her mom has built. She gets a well paying job, defends herself from a scuzzy sneaky customer, and is fired of course. She is contacted and told she could have a job as a bodyguard. She is overjoyed - but then finds out the handsome man who hired her is Uncle to the client she had to defend herself from. The nephew continues to try to make her look bad and she doesn't want to tell the uncle, who she loves, about his evil nephew. You will enjoy reading this fleshed out story line, how she combats his evilness and takes other jobs and adventures she has a long the way. I read it straight through after I started. Now it is 3:00...only 5 hours till I have to get up again, but I don't regret it. It's a great story!
Overall 4.5* This is at times quite a brutal story and yet poignant at others which is not an easy thing to do. Kat is a survivor from a childhood of living and supporting a debt ridden and alcoholic mother, and has had to fend for herself from an early age, finding solace and an aptitude for martial arts. She ends up working for a personal security company owned by friends and ex partners of her long dead father and believes she has finally found her niche, but life is not that simple. There is lots of violence and a very descriptive rape scene in the story however it is written with a depth of feeling to make you empathise and want the recipient to get justice by fair means or foul. The book may not be to everyone's taste however I really enjoyed it and look forward to reading the next one featuring Kat Farthing.
Kat is about a 18-year-old Kat Farthing, who since the age of 11 has gone from dead end job to dead end job to look after her alcoholic mother and pay off all her debts. Kat lost her father at a young age and never learnt much about him. A strong female lead, Kat is a woman who can take care of herself. She got her black belt at the age of just ten.
Whilst working in a lap dancing club Kat's experience with a touchy punter results in her life being changed forever. Kat is given the chance of a better life, getting to know her father as told by his friends and meeting the love of her life. However, not everyone is on Kat's side and will stop at nothing to see her suffer.
A very gripping thriller filled with action from a strong female lead. Kat not only shows her strength through her martial arts, but I also liked the way the author shows Kat being vulnerable and this making her stronger than before.
A well written story with great written characters, good and bad. Great read.
Thank you to TBConFB for letting me have this review copy of Kat. I was impressed! The lead character, Katherine Farthing, is a 19 year old who lives with her alcoholic mother and falls on hard times. Those times come to an end though, when she is recruited by MPS, a protection squad offering services to the rich and famous. However, despite having found a job she loves, Kat is hounded by a particularly nasty character called Alex and some of the scenes involving him and his henchmen make for unpleasant reading. I loved Kat. She is feisty, brave and tenacious. Think Una Thurman in Kill Bill (without all the chopping off of limbs and tweaking out eyeballs) and that's how I imagined her.
Kat Farthing is 18 and has spent much of her life looking after her alcoholic mother. The only thing she has going for her is she is proficient at martial arts. While working at a strip joint she meets a man who treats he badly. not long after she gets the chance to show how good she is at martial arts and begins to work as a bodyguard. The company is owned by Connor who is the uncle of the guy at the strip joint ,who is also an old friend of her fathers. What follows is an action packed thriller and a love story.
Kat is a strong, likable young woman. A real page turner. Loved it.
If you want a book with a strong female protagonist, this is the one for you! Kat had to grow up quickly in a rough environment with minimal parental support. That she survived at all, let alone grew up to be the kick-ass heroine of this tale is a testament to her physical and mental strength. Equally astonishing is that she remains a caring, even a loving person! The plot is gripping, and you will hang on every page as she fights for her life and her friends, coworkers and family. You will not be able to set this book aside until finished!
After reading the reviews I wasn’t sure what I would be getting. What I got was a good story. Interesting and nicely developed characters. A good plot. Gritty, yes. But that’s how life is. Action with some revenge added in. A lot was made of the rape but it was handled in as good a ways as possible. It was a necessary part of the book but it didn’t take over the book. I will definitely read book 2 in the series and will look forward to more by the author. Recommended.
Madras tells a good story, capturing the emotions and development of her characters, the depravity of some individuals, and that sometimes, people actually real what they sow within their lifetime. Kat is spunky and has the will to survive and take care of her alcoholic mother. As Kat develops.a support system, there is a blooming romance. But, life isn't always fair. This is a page turner .
I initially thought a 3 rating fit but gave it 4. Here's why, the story line and characters were all good. I like to think I'm fairly knowledgeable about the world, but I've never seen a black person in any media about Scotland. he description of Conner was clear as day and it still went over my head until much later in the story. So I then had to check out the
This book was a great story! It had all the elements that you could want in a book. Likeable characters and despicable villains and a great ending. I could not put it down . I cheered on the main character and cried for the victims. Thank you ms. Macrae......I can't wait till your next book!!
Wonderfully written and developed into an exciting unending world of intrigue adventure. It both warms your heart, saddens you yet ultimately brings you hope for the good to triumph over bad. Looking forward to the next book in this series!
Good character and plot development. Exciting believable fight descriptions. Kat is someone you'd want in your corner if she was real. I hope there is more of her in the future.
A story well told. It maintains tension and reader interest until the end. The characters are dimensioned and believable even the minor characters have depth. A good read, you won't be disappointed.
This is such an exciting story I really loved it. I found it deeply moving and at one point sad enough I found it hard not to shed a tear. Sometimes in life not everything turns out perfectly we have to settle for a lot less.
Love love love this book. Kat and Connor beautiful love story, Kat's forgiveness to Cameron, no unnecessary killing but Kat got her revenge and the other ladies against Alex. Need more of Kat, Michael, Charlie, Davie and Mrs. M.
This book was such a flowing read. Kat is a strong character who survived many trials and tribulations. So many things happened to her, but with Michael her friend, she was able to overcome and be on the winning side
I read a lot and all kinds of books. This one was so different and so interesting I really read it literally in one day. Kat is an amazing character, honor, trust, loving fair...yet does what must be done...so different.....recommend it!
Kat is the most resilient person you are to meet. She had to grow up fast when her father dies . She practices martial arts to keep her sanity and for a part time job. This skill works into a full-time job and a whole new life.
When you oversleep and are late for work because you wanted to read "one more chapter" the night before, there's no doubt you'll want to read more by this gifted author!
A really good read and very exciting and different from my usual reads. It is about a very independent and strong young girl and what happens to her as she is hated by one man and he makes her life hell and she has many struggles but is a very determined lady.
Great story, fast paced account of Kat Farthing’s background and early professional life. She’s a fierce martial arts expert and now a trained private security/hit woman with a conscience, if that makes sense! Looking forward to more of her adventures.
Always love reading about female conqueror! Good story from start to finish about a woman well trained in the martial arts and one who is well adapted to life struggles and works her way through them all.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It kept me glued to my seat waiting to read what happened next. I can't wait for the next book in the series. Great read👍
