What could be more magical than having a unicorn as a best friend? For nine-year-old Phoebe Howell, it all started while she was skipping rocks across a pond and accidentally hit a dazzling but self-absorbed unicorn named Marigold Heavenly Nostrils. Together, the unlikely BFFs discover a world full of magical mysteries and adventure, taking on everything from cruel classmates to candy-breathing dragons. These beautifully drawn comics show that even when life isn’t all rainbows and glitter, every day is magical with your best friend.

Dana Claire Simpson grew up in Gig Harbor, Washington, drawing the entire time. She eventually graduated from The Evergreen State College, despite having spent all her time drawing, and not always for credit.

Attempts at doing real work along the way are hardly worth mentioning; the relevant fact is that, from 1998 to 2008, she drew the internet comic strip Ozy and Millie. After winning the Amazon-sponsored Comic Strip Superstar Contest in 2009, Universal Uclick signed her to a development deal for Heavenly Nostrils.

She currently lives in the Seattle area with her tech genius husband and her fairly stupid cat.

Originally comic strips, Phoebe and her unicorn are as close to Calvin and Hobbes as anything I've read, and in some ways they're easier to read as everyone is sympathetic (less of the parents being annoyed with the child, particularly). They're hilarious, pertinent to today's life, sweet, spot-on, etc. etc. I think they'd work well for elementary school readers and tweens, and I like them an awful lot as an adult. I'm so glad I discovered them once there were plenty to binge on!

I had been wanting to read one of these popular with our students graphic novels. The cover is very alluring-pink and unicorns. The voice has a tiny bit of hilarious edge to it which is refreshing and fun. The unicorn is so wrapped up in her own awesomeness it's a miracle that she and Phoebe even become friends. Recommended

A charming comic strip about childhood, friendship, and being fantastic. I particularly recommend this collection, which has a few added crafts and projects for children in the target audience to enjoy.

Interactions between a young, somewhat dorky girl and vain, beautiful unicorn. Often quite funny.
