As the matriarch in one of Chicago’s elite families, Bridgette Valentine has the weight of the world on her shoulders. Coordinating soiree’s for every season, along with pulling her weight as the co-owner of Valentine Media Group, Bridgette is left little time to indulge in the one person who rocks her world, Leslie Valentine. As a domineering force to be reckoned with, and head honcho of their dynasty, Leslie is the epitome of Bridgette’s wildest dreams. He’s not clueless to the way she’s withdrawn from him, and instead of forcing her attention, Leslie sets out to eliminate anything that threatens to come between them, determined to reclaim her soul and nourish her heart once again.

*This novella follows the mother and father of the Valentine men. This is not Kyle's story which comes next.*

Leslie said the apples don’t fall too far from the tree and baby 🗣️I AM THE TREE!!! 🗣️HEARD!!! The patriarch and matriarch of the Valentine crew had entered the chat and these old folks got me clutching my pearls! 🤭😅

After obvious distance causes a bit of contention between the couple, Leslie decides that he needs to break out the kerosene and reignite the fire that has started to dim in the bedroom! Once Leslie got Bridgette worked up it was on! Bridgette said nahh Hunter I’m dropping your baby off TUHNIGHT!! 😩😩

One thing for certain and two things for sure, these two did not play about each other! Bridgette showed that when she yoked up the masseuse after a “misunderstanding” 😂😩. I’m never disappointed getting a mature love story and this was full of love with a razzle dazzle of spice!

There’s no excuse men, even when the kids are all grown and you’re grandparents, the snap crackle and pop can still be possible in the bedroom!

I absolutely love the Valentine series and it was especially delightful to read about the Patriarch and Matriarch of the Valentine Dynasty.

Bridgette Valentine has it all, a wonderful husband and children, an amazing business that she built with her husband Leslie, she has an amazing spirit, a grandson, friends, and most importantly love.

But as for any woman, aging is a touchy subject and weight gain as well. So when Bridgette finds herself with some added weight, she doesn't see it as a positive but a negative, and in her mind unattractive to her husband. Now when we get a hold of something in our minds, it runs rampant especially if it's negative thinking about ourselves. And we often don't share our fears or insecurities because we are afraid of being ridiculed or worse told it's all in our imagination.

Author Stephanie Nicole Norris takes us on a journey about women getting older and having some weight gain, and how what others may deem silly, is oftentimes devastating to women, and the lengths that women will at times go through to reverse those things, to keep being attractive and desired by our mate.

It is an amazing story about a couple who have been in love with each other and still going strong and how sometimes even when we have all of that, we still feel at times insecure. And also it is beautiful when we can read about mature love, it gives us something to look forward to as we age with our own mates.

Well Until My Next Review...Ciao!

And This I Swear was romantic, sexy, and hot AF! Whew chile! Who knew the senior Valentines could get down like that! Leslie and Bridgette Valentine set the standards for Black Love. We definitely found out who the Valentine sons inherited their swagger from. Mr. Leslie ain't no joke! And, Lawd, Ms. Bridgette is a feisty little scrapper! She was ready to give ole girl a two piece and a biscuit behind her man! Ms. Bridgette battled with insecurities about getting older and gaining weight but, Mr. Leslie was so patient with her and reassured her he loved her no matter how many lumps and bumps she had. This was a sweet story and I can't wait for Kyle's.

Cute older couple Novella.

This novella is the story of the Valentine Brothers’ parents, Leslie and Bridgette, who are in and around their 60s. The premise is that Bridgette, a conventional beauty all her life, is around 60 and is noticing her body aging and changing and becomes very insecure about it. This makes her push her husband away and they both begin to wonder if infidelity is at play even though the love and attraction between them is never in doubt.

I love this author’s books because she knows how to write vulnerable heroes who aren’t afraid to be emotional and who are all in for their heroines. I also like that she writes realistic scenarios. This is a short novella and isn’t particularly heavy on plot but in it, the author addresses a theme that affects many long term relationships i.e. confidence and feeling attractive enough for your partner. I love how it was dealt with in a non-Pygmalion way and I think this was a cute, short read. I definitely would like to read more romances featuring older people although *MY* hips ached are the... “acrobatics” at the end, and I’m much younger the MC in this. Really enjoy this author’s books.

Great Valentine's Treat

Okay, mom and pop had it going on too. I keep telling you young folks 60 is still the sheeeettt, we can do the do better. Leslie was like a fine wine aged to perfection, and Bridgette just needed a reminder from her man that she still owned his heart.

It's no secret that we readers love the Valentine Brothers, and from the bits and pieces we read about Mama Bridgette and Daddy Leslie throughout the series, we knew that their love story was one to surpass all! If you haven't picked up a Stephanie Nicole Norris novel yet, you need to...like right now!

And This I Swear is romantic, funny, sweet, sexy, and just plain #HotAF!! 🔥🔥These two definitely set the standards for #BlackLove&Romance. And like I've said before, if there was any doubt about where the Valentine sons inherited their swagger, that sexy sense of alpha male, and their ability to make a woman swoon while cherishing both her mind and body--all the evidence you need is right here in this book. My goodness!! While we're discussing parents who passed down admirable traits, who says love, sex, sensuality, and romance is just for the young?!! Not Mr. Leslie Valentine...that's for sure!! LOL! I can understand why Bridgette felt like she needed to make some changes to keep up with him!

As we get older, fears and insecurities have a way of sneaking in, and Bridgette's came to the forefront full blast. This story definitely hit on some serious notes for a lot of women over a certain age.

And if there's another thing to learn from this book, its the reiteration that "communication is key." Bridgette could have saved herself a whole lot of heartache and doubt if only she had listened to her very wise, very funny, and crazy as hell best friend Edna. By the way, Edna was a damn hoot, and we need more of her!

Anyway, all Bridgette had to do was talk to Leslie about what was going on with her, and he would have quelled those fears instantly! Whew! This book was EVERYTHING! Any woman would be so blessed to have a man like Leslie Valentine loving on them the way he loves on Bridgette. Have mercy!! Ms. Norris, thank you so much for showing us why this couple is #BlackLoveGoals!❤🖤💜❤🖤💜

Love Me As I Grow

I knew I'd love this one. It's not too many times that you get to see where the love of these type of debonair men comes from or where they get their mannerisms from, so this story was very welcomed. I love that the matriarch Bridgette Valentine had her self issues. What I didn't like is that she couldn't see, even after 30+ years, that her husband Leslie Valentine, still wanted her just as much as he did when they met. I can appreciate a man showing love for a woman so deep, that he just sees her heart and loves her unconditionally. That Edna was a mess. And the way Bridgette reacted to that woman, WOW! I for sure thought she was a goner, lol. This was great and made me even more eager for Kyle's story. Book 8 let's go.

The female MC is an entrepreneur who is obviously incredibly intelligent and the head of very successful business so that she's desperately trying to become suddenly overnight more attractive for her DH did not work for me. She wants literal overnight improvement to her appearance to the point that she goes to get injections and considers surgery to get improvement. I didn't understand her sudden obsession with her appearance. I liked that it's challenged on page.

Beautiful By Design (BBD) is reading “In the Heart of a Valentine”, a 9-part series by author Stephanie Nicole Norris. We selected a sequel theme for this book cycle and for anyone reading these reviews will know we took another aggressive leap and read Books 6 and 7 this time. The sixth book in the series titled, In Pursuit of You received 3.0 out of a 5-star rating by BBD. The seventh book in the series titled, And This I Swear received a 2.9 out of a 5-star rating; however, it will show 3.0 on Goodreads. For rating purposes, there will be two separate entries with a duplicative review. Check out reviews for Books 1 through 5.

I want to give thanks to the Zoom platform for allowing BBD to fellowship virtually for book club. And shout out to our host, Sonja, for always being consistent with thought-provoking and situational questions for meaningful conversations and discussions for both books! Hopefully, by next meeting, we will be able to power down these computers, mask up, vaccinate, and meet in person. As always, BBD will keep it moving!

Book 6: In Pursuit of You
This was the story about DeAndre and Avery. In this book, the author decided not to rewrite the backstory as she did previously. It was just a brief mention of the parents and how they rose to celebrity status and that the kids were sextuplets. The story started 8 months into the relationship. This was a very short read. To the point where it felt rushed and too much packed into the story in a short timeframe. BBD continues to set the expectation bar higher and higher with each book but was really let down on this one. There were parts in the story that were very unbelievable and farfetched. Granted, this is not based on a true story, but at least make it seem slightly realistic. If this book was the first in the series, we agreed that we would not have continued to read the series.

On a more positive review, we did appreciate that Avery was not portrayed as though she was not worthy. Instead, the author flipped the roles making DeAndre vulnerable and questioning his worthiness. Their relationship was very lighthearted with a touch of humor. We like that Stephanie creates imperfect characters for these almost perfect men, and they fall in love with these women. Spoiler alert: In this book, Avery’s illness did not consume her or break her spirit for the most part. She made modifications so she could continue to live her best life and when the pain hit, she dealt with it in her own way. BBD can agree this was by far the freakiest brother. For that, the rating deserved the 3.0. Just saying. Part of the sex scenes was like another steamy series, but it was still enjoyable to read no less. This book also contains destinations and events that can be added to the bucket list.

Book 7: And This I Swear
This book was about the love story between Bridget and Leslie Valentine, the matriarch and patriarch of this Valentine clan. It provided insight into the love affair of these two individuals and how their relationship, values and strengths helped to shape and mold their children’s love, compassion, and humanity about life and for people. The author gave a snippet of the blossoming relationship between Kyle and London Jones in book 8. BBD is sure the author has her reasons for the order of these books; however, we felt this relationship should have been in the beginning. If not first, then definitely the last story in the series. This book focused on the strengths and challenges of love and marriage as well as things that may test it if you are blessed to have longevity. Without divulging any spoilers, there were some parts in the book that teetered on disbelief in our opinion.

In previous reviews, BBD felt this series was too predictable, too repetitive, and similar in story pattern. However, author Stephanie Nicole Norris threw us a curve ball in Book 3 and we concluded to see the series through to the end. After reading Books 6 & 7, the group unanimously agreed that we could script our own ending for the last two books in the series and decided to sunset In the Heart of A Valentine series. While the author provided very steamy romance scenes in each book and climatic plots, there were no exhale moments after reading the books that satiated our appetite for wanting more. I do want to mention that the grammatical errors diminished in the recent books read. If you continue to read to the end of series, congrats for seeing it through; but, as for BBD, we are out And This I Swear!

Loved it

This was the love story about Bridgett and Leslie Valentine parents to the amazing Valentine brothers. This story covers the work of a mature love an the steps and work it takes to maintain that love. Bridgett felt that because she was nearing 60 and gained a few pounds Leslie no longer found her attractive so she pushed him away. Concerned about her emotional distance and their lack of intimacy Leslie wondered if Bridgett was having an affair. After a stern talking too from a dear friend Brigett realized that she's not only punishing Leslie by constantly pushing him away when it came to intimacy but herself as well. A night of deep talking and amazing sex and these two love birds reconnected physically , emotionally and spiritually. Great book Stephanie, now bring in Kyle and London

Lifetime Love

The Valentine's do not disappoint. Bridgette was on my nerves, however I really relate and understand her plight. As 40 looms I too have those reservations about my body. I am giving her grace as we all handle aging and the changes in our bodies differently. Every woman is looking for a Leslie, super attentive, caring, amazing relationship with his children, and loves his wife to the core. He was so patient with Brigette as she warred with her own insecurities. It goes to show how important communication will always be, even with the tough conversations. This was a sweet story and I can't wait for Kyle's.

Old School Love....

Any book I have read so far from Ms. Norris has been a hit. This one is no different than the last six I have read about the Valentines. The father, Leslie, is just like his sons caters to their mother. You can just tell by the description his physique is just as defined as his sons.

Bridgette had to get herself together and realized that her husband loved her no matter what. He proved it when he surprised her with a vow renewal.

I am looking forward to next Valentine's man's love story. I know it is Kyle and from the one scene in this novella, he is about to come through like a roaring lion.

I always recommend Ms. Norris she does not disappoint.

I see where the sons get it from!

Leslie Valentine media mogul and dapper patriarch of the famous Chicago Valentines uses this time in his life to take a moment with his beautiful vivacious wife and the other whole media mogul to their vast empire that spawned seven beautiful sons where all survived to adulthood but one to renew their vows to each other. Leslie and Bridgette Valentine are enjoying being empty nesters with the first of their grandchildren Hunter,Jr. All of their handsome offspring are successful with lady loves in the form of wives except the youngest of the Septuplets. One young lady seem to be on the verge of changing that status. Our beloved Bridgette finds herself at a place most of us as women struggle with aging and all that comes with growing forward thinking herself no longer desirable. I love how Bridgette was allowed to feel her misplaced inadequacies and how Leslie validated her thinking. He then took it upon himself (by apologizing to her) stating he did not do enough to let her know it was her essence he sought and not just her benefits. Thankfully Bridgette had a good friend in Edna that always kept it 100 with her. Fears were alleviated in Bridgette's mind finally and she relaxed and enjoyed the love and intimacy with her gorgeous husband who showed her he loved her to life! I truly enjoyed the Valentine brothers' parents' story. Still looking forward to Kyle's story. It may be on my "to read" list in my library as I discovered this one was. Thanks Ms. Nicole Norris for some great love stories.

This was a cute novella - kiiinnnda weird to listen to it as an audiobook where the narrators are the ones who voiced their kids ... [probably a good thing I read this one second then...]

I really liked that an older couple was featured in a romance.
But ... *blinks*

Like ... I mean granted I read a book where an author wrote a character is 5'4" and less than 100 lbs so yeah I mean we all know [especially?] in romances the women are TINY but ...
Seriously 15 lbs after 30+ years and SEVEN kids - granted all at once ...

Yo.

also she's ALMOST 60. If she's only gained 15 lbs that's amazing.

Anyway.

I liked how everything was NOT working out for Bridgette ... and how into her Leslie was, that since he first saw her he was smitten.
[I love me a smitten hero.]
That he's so sweet as to arrange the spa day for her. [A bit weird he had to meet the chick for lunch - although it lets Bridgette wild out and get low key blackmailed so there's that necessary for the plot point part...]

The major focus on her youngest son - that felt so random [and series bait-y?]

But it was a cute novella and I enjoyed it - went to book 2 now :)

I'd say ... solid C

I was a little disappointed and surprised by this book. Bridgette, being so insecure and irrational was just not believable to me. Not to mention with Bridgette being successful in her own right. Especially after giving birth and raising with her husband Leslie's assistance, all of these strong, independent, successful men. It just wasn't plausible to me.

I'm not saying she shouldn't or couldn't be insecure. I am only saying that the level of her insecurity seemed irrational. The fact that she expected immediate plastic surgery results....irrational. The way she behaved with the spa owner...rude, irrational, and chargeable.

I was looking forward to this book about the romance of a more mature couple, but this woman behaved like she was in high school. I expected more from an independent, intelligent, successful woman who also had a loving husband. Where did all the insecurity come from? It seemed to be all superficial. A little insecurity, yes. Hers, ridiculous.

I did like her friend. The narration was good. The female narrator sounded young, and not as mature as Bridgette was supposed to be, but the narration was appropriate to Bridgette's behavior. 2.5 stars, with the .5 increase being because of the narration.

A beautiful story about the strong power of real love between two people.

I gave this book a five star rating because there were no mistakes throughout the book that made it hard for me to understand what the author was trying to say. In this book we get to take a look at Bridgette's and Leslie's relationship as a couple, how personal insecurities can cause you to question your worth, making you start to feel like you're not good enough anymore. I can relate to Mrs. Valentine's worries about not feeling good in her own skin because I both used to and still do question your worth because your outer appearance. I'm just glad that every time Bridgette was trying to correct a problem in my appearance that wasn't necessary life, destiny or even define intervention stepped in before she could do something that couldn't be undone. With every book in the "In The Heart of A Valentine" series I start to see where all of Leslie's and Bridgette's sons get their respectfulness, and all of their other admirable qualities.

"And This I Swear" by Stephanie Nicole Norris

My Speculation:

A beautifully told story showing that it doesn't matter who you are one, such as Bridgette, can have some preconceived ideas about what can happen as life takes over their lives. With Bridgette believing ...well, I will stop here and say you will have to pick this story up to see what it is all about. I hated it when Bridgette chose not to even listen to her best friend about her situation. However, it was great that Bridgette had a wonderful husband named Leslie that loved her regardless of all she thought about herself. It left me feeling what some women will do for there man to please them, and sometimes it isn't necessary.

This time around we get a peek into the parents of the infamous Valentine men and what a peek it was!

Leslie Valentine deeply loves his wife of almost 30 years and it showed not only in his words and actions, it could actually be felt coming up off the pages. He was able to calm all of Bridgette's ill-conceived notions about feeling undesirable. As a woman, I've felt all of Bridgette's fears at one time or another and knew how she felt. Her best friend, Edna, was a true rider!

As hard as Bridgette tried to hide her fears from her husband, it simply did not go that way. We were shown unconditional love and that is what caused Bridgette to finally see herself as Leslie did. I enjoyed the story very much.

Wow the head Valentine man🔥

So PaPa is in the building now we all know where the Valentine men get it from and oh my the women in their lives have a lifetime of hotness ahead of them! Leslie Valentine should be a man’s husband goals🥰. The love and solace he bestowed on Bridgette was true couple goals and a beautiful example for his sons. The sex was so hot, this a PA be prepared for your eyes to widen in shock, heart to beat uncontrollably, sweat to pour from body, and leakage 💦💦💦💦 you will not be able to stop. I’m here for it all now I know why all the Valentine men should wear a warning label to proceed with CAUTION 🔥💦👅🥰

Them Valentine Mensss!!

Daddy Valentine is the definition of a grown man hunny! He was laying it on thick and it is clear that the men of the Valentine get theirs charm and swagger from Daddy V because the way he just loved his wife was unmatched! His kids definitely learned from him. And because of that I found it hard to believe Bridgette’s thinking. Her insecurities overshadowed ever aspect of love that Leslie was trying to show her and truly it baffled me. But we all deal with our insecurities differently I guess. As always, it was a well-written story that kept me flipping pages! ~Melanin Readss

Close to my heart!

I understood the feelings that Mrs. Valentine was going through in this novel! As women we need to be reassured, we need to understand that yes, we love every inch of our aging bodies but recognise that our husbands love it too. Many today don't fall in love with the soul and don't connect with the spirit of the person but when you do, it is the most beautiful experience you can have. I love Edna's character, she made me laugh out loud and it was beautiful to see the type of relationship she had with her best friend. Another enjoyable read in this series!

Great read

I can never get enough of those Valentine men. Those men are passionate and live their women hard. They get it from their father for sure. Bridgette should have known that her husband lived Hart just the way she was. She was holding out and was missing all the signs o of him sanding her. He was a very patient man and waited for her. This man was everything and then some. I can't wait to read About the baby boy Kyle, I'm sure he is just as passionate. Keep the books coming.

Beautiful!

Communication is definitely a key component in relationships but so is trust. I think because of their environment and livelihood Bridgette felt she was losing her youth, but I think she lost herself which created insecurities within her. She definitely forgot that she was married to a Valentine. He's the head Valentine who I feel is the most sweetest, loving, sensual and most of all the sexiest of his clan. I'm glad Leslie put her in her place, letting her know that his love is for real. This was a great read from beginning to end. ReneeG 👍
