Another enjoyable visit to Leavenworth, Washington. I'm still surprised at how quickly I've become invested in this series. Without a Brew is only the second book I have read from this series, yet I've already fallen in love with the quaint Bavarian-themed town, and the characters all feel like old friends. To me, that is just a testament to how good of a writer Ellie Alexander is. She has truly done a wonderful job of describing the town and developing the characters. I felt like I was right th ...more

Without a Brew by Ellie Alexander is the 4th novel in A Sloan Krause Mystery series. It can be read as a standalone if you are new to the series or missed a book along the way. I enjoy visiting Leavenworth, Washington which reminds me of German Village where I grew up. It is a quaint town with Bavarian charm. The town is preparing for IceFest with games, fireworks, food, and loads of twinkle lights. I like that Sloan Krause is a strong female who continues to develop. She is finding out who she ...more

Without a Brew is the 4th book in the Sloan Krause Mystery Series. I love the Pacific Northwest setting for this book and the German town of Leavenworth. Ms. Alexander does such a wonderful job describing the town and events in each book allowing readers to form a quaint picture. The characters are wonderful in this series. Sloane is growing and learning what her new life will hold after her split from Mac. Although, one of the things that keep me coming back to books by this author is her chara ...more

3.5 STARS - Without A Brew is the fourth book in a cozy mystery series featuring craft brewer, Sloan Krause. Set in a picturesque German-inspired village in Washington state, as a craft beer lover of the first order, I enjoy the beer references and reconnecting with the characters in each new book.

This is a typical cozy mystery with its small-town feel, inexperienced sleuth, increasing body count and a gaggle of regular 'townie' characters to round out the story. If you can get past how easily p

This is the fourth book in the Sloan Krause series. Sloan and Garrett have just put the finishing touches of the guest rooms at Nitro and are having a dry run before the winter festival, IceFest, starts. They have a couple staying in one of the rooms and a second group comes to stay that is downright terrible. They add another guest when Sloan offers a room to a patron, Liv Paxton, who is stuck in Leavenworth for the night. The next morning Liv's room is found trashed and there is no sign of her ...more

One of the best in this series, author Ellie Alexander doesn't disappoint. I look forward to where this series takes us next..
A biting January wind blew into the taproom as the front door to Nitro opened and a group of skiers traipsed inside.

This is the fourth book in the Sloan Krause series set in Leavenworth, Washington. Garrett has opened the top floor of Nitro for a bed and breakfast. The soft opening for this venture becomes totally booked when a group of skiers come to town without reservations. A lone woman, Liv, also rents a room in addition to an apparently loving couple. When Liv ends up dead, all eyes are on
Sloan thought things were going OK in her Brew Pub despite her pending divorce and other personal issues. Then an obnoxious entitled moron and his groupies came in demanding lodging, so she had an unprepared room opened. Then came a despirited woman in the same fix, but she seemed spooked by a couple of locals. Then she was missing and found dead. Both the capable local law and Sloan need to investigate but for slightly different reasons. Good sleuthing, good characterizations, full of twists an ...more

I really, really enjoy the Sloan Krause Mysteries. While a lot of cozies I come back for the characters and community (which I do enjoy in this series too) Ellie Alexander’s descriptions of the town, weather, interior design, and Bavarian culture is really phenomenal. In a lot of cozies, if I’ve read any of the other books in the series, I find it easy to skim through the descriptions since a lot of authors focus more on their characters and plot, but Alexander’s details are so beautiful and int ...more

The third book in this series (Beyond a Reasonable Stout) was my first Ellie Alexander (don't judge me for reading out of order--it's what the library had!) and I fell in love with her. I immediately ordered books one and two (and the first in her Bakeshop series). When I had the chance to read this book, book four, I was ecstatic! And it DID NOT DISSAPPOINT!

I've been reading a lot of cozy mysteries lately, and these just show me why Alexander is the QUEEN of cozy mysteries. When you have a "co

I really like this series; Sloan is a really good MC and I like her surrounding group of friends very much. The day-to-day at the brewery is interesting [I had no idea so much went into making microbeer and this has been a fun way to learn about something that isn't really on my radar] and Garrett and Kat are good characters and balance Sloan well. I also like that Sloan does her JOB [and does it well. Her job and business are important to her and it shows] and doesn't pass the buck to others so ...more

Without a Brew by Ellie Alexander is part of a fun series about a woman and her partner who run a microbrewery and tasting room in a small town in Washington, very German. The woman is Sloan Krause, hence the title of the series. They are about to open the second floor of the brewery as a small bed and breakfast, only about four rooms, when it became necessary to open it early as they apparently had the only empty rooms in town. They had the one couple they had counted on, Ali and Brad, when a b ...more

This is the fourth book in the Sloan Krause mystery series by Ellie Alexander.

Wow, every book makes me love this series even more. I loved how you had side storylines that really gave Sloan pause (eg. are Mac’s parents really Nazi supporters and dangerous?). This on top of the murder of one of their visitors staying in their Nitro guest rooms.

Sloan helps the local police chief ferret out who might have a motive to kill a young girl. This story is a lot more than it seems. I love it whe

Sloan certainly didn't expect that Liv would be found dead in the river the day after she spent the night at Nitro, Sloan's new B&B. This latest installment in a delightful series set in Leavenworth, Washington is perfectly enjoyable as a standalone. Cozy readers know that there was more going on with Liv than Sloan could have known and that the obnoxious patrons are likely a red herring. This is a bit more than the usual cozy, though- it's also a story about a woman coming into her own. Sloan's ...more

I did not want this book to end. I’ve come to really like Sloane and this book shows her in a whole new light.
Working at the pub with Garrett makes Sloane happy, as well as spending time with her extended family by marriage. Sloane doesn’t have her own family, and in this story, it seems that Sloane has no idea who she is at all.
Hosting a soft run of the potential b & b they plan to open is exciting for Sloane, and when an obnoxious guest gets on everyone’s nerves, the discovery of a murdered gu

I have never been a huge cozy mystery reader but this book has made me way more open to including more in my regular reading. Combining beer, an independent woman, and a well framed mystery, this book had me hooked within a couple pages and made me want to read all of its predecessors in the Sloan Krause series.

I was impressed that I did not feel like I had to read the two prior books in the series at all to get comfortable with the characters and their histories. The author does a spectacular

Sloan Krouse is making changes to her life. Even though she’s spent her years in Leavenworth, Washington living outside of town in a farmhouse, she’s thinking of moving in to town. There she would be able to walk to work, at the brew pub Nitro. And things are changing at work too. The four guest rooms that Sloan and Garrett have been fixing up are almost ready to open, just in time for IceFest, the big festival the town puts on to draw tourists into the quaint Bavarian village filled with good b ...more

Without a Brew is the fourth book in the Sloan Krause Mystery series, a series which I happen to LOVE! I must say – this fourth book in the series is, in my opinion, the best so far. If you like cozy mysteries that keep you guessing until the end, a slow burning “other” intriguing storyline, protagonists with every day relatable issues, then this is the book for you. While you can certainly read this as a stand alone, I

Sloan Krause and her business partner Garrett are ready to make their Nitro Brewery opening into a bed and breakfast. However, their debut weekend gets a little out of hand when a burst pipe brings in guest. Plus there's the stranded visitor. Unfortunately all the other hotels are full, and so Nitro Breweey B & B is jumping off with 2 feet. When one of the guests is discovered missing the fol

A Sloan Krause Mystery #4

by Ellie Alexander

Without a Brew-Summary
It’s ski season in the North Cascades. At Nitro, a craft beer nanobrewery located in Leavenworth, Washington, Sloan Krause and her boss, Garrett, are busy pouring pints for the locals and the ski crowd. Part of the crowd is a young couple celebrating their anniversary. Ali and Brad are the first guests of Nitro’s soft opening as a beer themed B & B, but as busy ski weekends would have it, not the only guests.

I like beer and I like mysteries so that's why this series has caught my eye.

Sloan had recently discovered her husband, Mac, had cheated. She was working for his family's brewery and got another job working with Garrett in his new microbrewery/pub, Nitro. Sloan is enjoying working with Garrett in his smaller business as it gives her a more hands-on opportunity to create interesting craft beers with him.

It's a busy weekend in Leavenworth. Garrett had been considering opening up some rooms to rent
I've mentioned before, I have no interest in beer or beer-making, but Ellie Alexander's Sloan Krause mystery series is still interesting and entertaining. Although the fourth in the series, Without a Brew, has some information about craft beer brewing, it's still a mystery set in a small town, one that is dependent on the hospitality industry. And, Sloan Krause and Nitro are jumping in feet first.

Sloan and her boss and fellow brewer, Garrett, had intended a soft opening for their craft-beer-them

Without a Brew is a fun and unique cozy mystery that really makes you want to try a craft beer. Even for a non beer drinker.

Without a Brew is my first Sloan Krause and will not be my last. The Bavarian Village Ice festival is all but underway and Nitro is doing a soft open for their B&B tasting experience! Sloan and her boss Garrett learn quickly that innkeeping and beer brewing may not go hand in hand. Nitro’s soft open turns into a full house when a small group has a messed up reservation and

I really enjoy tearing into this series as soon as the next book is available. Craft beer is such an art.
Sloan Krause is the product of the foster care system, but has found a strong family and idyllic home in Leavenworth, Washington, where she has joined Garrett in crafting unique beers made from specialty hops. They’ve gradually added more services, light snacks and soups and are now looking forward to opening rooms above Nitro as a limited B&B.

In this episode, they are gearing up for IceFest

Without a Brew is the fourth book in author Ellie Alexander’s Sloan Krause mystery series set in Bavarian-like Leavenworth, Washington in the northern Cascade Mountains. Just weeks from IceFest, Sloan and her business partner in Nitro Brewery and Tasting Room, Garrett Strong, are doing a soft opening of their bed and breakfast enterprise attached in the same old building Garrett’s great-aunt Tess had left him.

They had taken a booking from a young couple celebrating their anniversary to check fo

I've have fallen in love with Ellie Alexander's writing and her two mystery series set in fictional small towns in the Pacific Northwest. The Bakeshop Mysteries and the Sloan Krause mysteries transport you to communities and towns that I would love to visit for their climate, the friendliness of the inhabitants, the absence of crime (except as relates to these mysterious murders) and the delicious food available. In the way that I'd escape to St Mary's Mead, I am happy to spend hours in Leavenwo ...more

Without a Brew is part 4 in the Sloan Krause Mystery and now I have to go back and read them all! Sloan is just coming off a divorce, separating her not only from her husband but from his family and the only family she's ever really known; but she's doing it with as much strength and grace as she can muster. Running a small brewpub with Garrett, they've decided to make things even more profitable by also opening up a Bed and Breakfast upstairs. Although they planned on a soft opening, an odd set ...more
