When Star is attacked, Lachlan resolves to protect her at all costs. And he won’t have to do it alone. It will take Lachlan, his clansmen, and Star’s misfit band of friends to rain fiery vengeance down upon their enemy if she and her sister are to ever be truly free. ANCIENT PROTECTOR by Katie Reus is the first book in the Ancients Rising paranormal romance and fantasy series. This is a spin-off of her Darkness series, but can be read without reading that series. It is also the second book by this author that I have read. Star’s sister has been abducted and she and her pack mates are determined to rescue her and head to their safe house.

Star and Lachlan are both Alphas of their packs and complement each other well. With two strong protagonists, this story line was bound to be exciting. Their characters are compelling, well-drawn, charming, and at times, funny. Their characters were three-dimensional and their goals were clear. The secondary characters were well-rounded and enhanced the story. The internal and external conflicts were well defined and the stakes were high. The prose was well-written, entertaining and engaging. I loved the writing style. The plot twists were believable, but not quite as unexpected as I would have liked. The world building is terrific. There are a few steamy scenes in the second half of the book.

Overall, this was a fun and entertaining book that has depth to it. Themes include shifters, witches, vampires and humans existing in the same world, romance, abduction, rebuilding lives, family relationships, friendship, greed, power and much more. I recommend this to those that enjoy paranormal romantic suspense with plenty of action scenes and some depth to the underlying themes. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series as well as other books by this author.

Many thanks to KR Press, LLC – Author Collective 20 and Katie Reus for a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley and the opportunity to provide an honest review. Opinions are mine alone and are not biased in any way.

Ancient Protector by Katie Reus

Paranormal romance with dragon shifters. First in the Ancient Risings series.
A spin off from the Darkness series. Can be read without reading the prior series.
Quasi post-apocalyptic. Reincarnation / fated mate troupe.

Dragons have been outed to the world, as have other paranormals. Humans are no longer at the top of the food chain. The transition in power has changed the dynamics in the world. Everything from the dollar to health care to food distribution and housing must be reconfigured.
New Orleans is largely undamaged with alpha werewolf King is coordinating witches, food supplies, housing and security.
Star and band have taken refuge in New Orleans knowing that her sister’s kidnapper will obsessively try to reclaim possession.
Scottish dragon Lachlan follows Star to New Orleans. He will protect her at all costs. She is his mate.

I loved both the hero for his protectiveness and willingness to let the heroine lead. The heroine is a bit naive but trusts her pack to do their jobs.
My only issue was tracking all the secondary characters, especially at the end. Perhaps because additional help in the final battle came from the Darkness series which I haven’t read. In the end it didn’t really matter because of the hea, but like others have said - I hope to read King’s hea soon.

Absorbing, creative and heartening.

I received a copy of this from NetGalley. I also purchased a copy to share.

I'm so happy that we are back into this world again. This is a spinoff of the Darkness series and I love seeing some of my favorite characters again. Especially the ancient dragon shifters.

Out of all the dragon shifter books I have read, Katie Reus has created my absolute favorite dragons. They are dominant, territorial, and extremely possessive of their mates. Plus, they are so old, they come off a bit quirky in today's world.

Lachlan's intensity right from the very beginning had me sold. Especially since all that intensity was aimed at Star. He proved he would do anything for her. That's exactly what I'm looking for in a hero.

What Star was a mystery for most of the book. I did guess it, but I will admit I doubted my guess a couple of times. That just made it more fun. She was cool character. I don't normally like Alpha females but she was strong without being in your face about it. Plus she had some cool powers.

I loved it and I want more. I'm glad this is the start of a new series. There are so many characters still to explore in this world.

4 - "You need to step up your game… dragon." Stars!

A great start to Katie’s new Ancients Rising series. Ancient Protector bridges over from the Darkness series perfectly with characters old and new merging seamlessly in New Orleans, we are six weeks on from The Fall and paranormals are openly living side by side with humans whilst trying to rebuild their lives and city.

"You don’t give me orders. You are not my alpha…"

"…I could be your Alpha in the bedroom."

Star and Lachlan were both extremely likeable characters both feisty, and Alpha's of their own packs, it takes but moments for Lachlan to realise that they are also mates. I found his attempts at courting her endearing, and although reluctant initially it doesn’t take Star long to fall for his charms, a mutual enemy needs to be taken care of first though before they can go full steam ahead on the romance front.

"You’re a feisty lass."

I really enjoyed this one, especially King & Aurora’s connection which simmered alongside Lachlan and Star’s story. I really hope they get their own book at some point, because I think Aurora deserves full attention as a main character, what with getting over her experiences in captivity, but I also think King has a lot going for him too, and I would like to get into both of their heads more as they travel the path towards a full relationship.

"I’m sorry for all you’ve been through."

I love Katie’s PNR offerings and this series has the potential to be as great as it’s predecessor, I am eager for more books!

I am so excited that this author has decided to take us back into this world! Dragon shifters are my jam but Ms. Reus’ dragons are pure perfection.

Though there are 46 types of dragons, this quiz is on more obvious personalities. Find yourself inside one of these elusive and mystical creatures

Lachlan was obsessively protective of Star and another great example of my type of hero. Star was labeled “Alpha” which can often turn me off a heroine instantly. Not so here. She was sweet and caring but able to make the decisions necessary to protect her crew.

description

There’s a bit of mystery here surrounding this heroine’s origins. While it isn’t terribly hard to figure out, I was still anxious to verify if my guess was right or wrong. There isn’t really any relationship drama here as this story revolves around a villain and his intentions. This scenario is perfect to showcase the interactions between Star and Lachlan.

With a quick pace, plenty of action, a touch of wit, and some amazing characters we’ll be seeing more of, I found this to be just what I needed to relax into another world.

Ancient Protector is book 1 in the Ancients Rising series and picks up where Darkness Rising book 9 in the Darkness series left off. While this is a spin off series it works fine as a stand alone but I will encourage anyone who enjoys this book to go back because the Darkness series is so enjoyable. Lachlan is an ancient dragon who wakes from his hibernation after thousands of years. Star is a young singer who has finally found her kidnapped sister at the home of a powerful dragon but lucky for her there's an even more powerful dragon ready to help. As with most of this authors male characters I loved Lachlan and his determination to make Star his. Star was great too and I loved what she was. The connection between Lachlan and Star was fantastic and their HEA was perfect. So many new characters were introduced and I hope they all get stories at some point. I can't wait for book 2 in this series.

Great first book in a spin-off series to the Darkness series. This book takes places after the ending of Darkness Rising. No, you don't have to have read it to understand this book, but it sure makes it better.

Well actually, the first five chapters of this book are right before the fall and gives you history of Star and her peeps, the danger they are in, and we meet Lachlan. Then we fast forward to right after the fall where humans are now aware of supernatural beings (ie dragons, vampires, shifters). We are in New Orleans, King's domain. YAY! Lachlan helped save Star's sister and has the hots for Star. Star wants to give in but is afraid if he finds out what kind of shifter she is that it won't be good for anyone. Drama, action, chemistry, and lots more are in this book. Several peeps from the Darkness series make appearances and help Star's family (family by choice, not necessarily blood) in defeating the bad guy. King has the hots of one Star's family.

I can't wait to see what happens next, and hopefully we won't have to wait until the last book to get King's HEA.

Quickie review:

ANCIENT PROTECTOR is the first in a new series by Katie Reus. If you love dragon shifters like me you'll understand why I jumped at reading this. It did not quite meet my, admittedly ridiculous expectations but I did enjoy reading about Star and Lachlan.

Here are some points I noticed and wanted to point out:

- Both main characters are supposed to be alphas of their pack. I didn't feel that either of them actually had what it took to be alpha of a pack in terms of leadership but they were still quite likable.
-Another thing that bothered me a little: while Lachlan was an ancient who'd woken only a year ago from thousands of years in hibernation, his language was modern. Yes, this is PNR but I still expect a little bit of realism.
-I loved the mystery around Star's animal although I guessed it quite early on.
-The romance was as expected quite insta. I knew it was a shifter romance with a mating concept when I went in so I can't really complain about it.

This new series ties into Katie Reus's DARKNESS series which I haven't read. Although you can definitely read this book as a standalone without feeling lost you may benefit from having read this author's other series. I may have loved ANCIENT PROTECTOR a little more if I had been familiar with the world. With all that being said, this was a quick, action-filled read that had me entertained while I was immersed in this world of shifters, vampires, witches and magic. If you are looking for a new PNR series to try, give this a whirl!

I do love dragons.
Having loved the Darkness series I was excited at the prospect of more.

Star is a shifter but no one seems to know exactly what she is. And it does take a couple of chapters to work it out. Her sister Aurora has been kidnapped. And Star is about to launch a rescue mission when we first meet her.

Lachlan is an ancient dragon. Unable to live after the death of his loved one. Lachlan puts himself into hibernation. Recently risen he hears Star sing and her voice calls to him.

He helps her and follows her to the US. Where he attempts to win her heart and convince her that she’s his mate.

I throughly enjoyed this book.

This is the first book in the Ancients Rising series, and it’s a spin-off of the Darkness series. However, you don’t have to read the Darkness series to fall in love with the characters and world of Ancient Protector.

Star is a fantastic protagonist and leader, always thinking of her people before herself. She is selfless, strong, and powerful, and she’s well-respected. She is also a mystery. There are many types of shifters – dragons, lions, wolves, and more, but Star’s shifter identity remains a secret through most of the story. The reveal is fantastic, and I loved finding out what she was. I knew it would be something powerful and rare, but I was surprised nonetheless.

Lachlan is a wonderful complement to Star. He is an ancient dragon, newly awakened from hibernation. He has suffered much loss in his life, yet he still has hope. He is fierce in battle and protective of those he loves. Additionally, his views on women and equality are progressive and unexpected considering he is ancient and a clan leader. His devotion and loyalty to his people, Star, and other allies in the story is admirable. Plus, he’s a super-hunky and powerful alpha male! What’s not to love?

The sisterly bond is one of my favorite aspects of the story. Star and Aurora have a beautiful relationship, and it is clear that they love each other very much. Star devotes more than a year of her life trying to rescue Aurora from the evil clutches of a greedy dragon shifter, and Aurora struggles emotionally after being held in captivity. Star is patient and encouraging with her younger sister and pushes her without being bossy and overbearing. They understand each other well, and they have both been through a lot. They are a wonderful support for each other, and I enjoyed the progression of their relationship.

And, of course, there is the love story which is intense and strong. Star and Lachlan have a deep connection from the start, and though it is a bit insta-lovey, it still had a slow-burning feel. Lachlan knows from the first meeting that Star is his mate, but Star takes some persuasion. Used to keeping people at a distance, Star seems hesitant to let Lachlan get close. I liked that Lachlan had to work a bit to win over Star, and I liked that, though Lachlan is a possessive and dominant leader, he admires and supports Star’s leadership and independence. He is not looking to change her or control her. He wants a partner.

The ending felt a bit rushed in comparison to the rest of the book. However, with the way things ended, I have a feeling that we’ll see more of the couple in future books. Some things were left open, like the relationship between Aurora and King, and, hopefully, those stories will be expanded upon in future books. I want to know more about Star’s crew as well. Those characters weren’t as dynamically developed as Star and Lachlan, but their personalities were still unique and interesting.

Overall, this was a fun and well-paced story with great world-building, an interesting plot, and a wonderful romance. Thanks so much to Netgalley and KR Press for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

The audio was a bit difficult to get through. The narrator Lauren Enzo was a bad choice. I wish they had stuck with Jeffrey Kafer but who knows why they didn’t keep him on the spin-off.

Morning Star was the alpha of her shifter clan and she was a global singer named “Star”. Someone kidnapped her sister and for over a year, they were trying to find out who and why. Finally they found who kidnapped Aurora, but getting her from the evil dragon shifter Oscar was going to be tricky.
Plus an ancient dragon shifter named Lachlan has suddenly appeared and he wants Star. She doesn’t trust dragons and certainly doesn’t want them to know what she really is. Her dilemma is now how to rescue Aurora and lose Lachlan at the same time, even though she finds his attractive.

This story was cliche, the grand reveal that stretched the whole book didn’t move me. I think I would have enjoyed this book better If I read it. I liked Lachlan, Star was just okay for me. I never really figured out why their past love was so epic. It was hoping for more but it was really just okay. I do love this author and the Darkness series so I will still read book 2.

4.5 ‘My Morning Star’ Stars

Awww, how I missed Katie Reus Darkness world!!! These dragons just can be beat and Lachlan is THE dragon! What an amazing come back to one of my fav PNR universes!

To say I was excited for the spin off series would be an understatement because I was dying for this. And the wait and anticipation were so worth because Lachlan and Star are the perfect couple to kick off this new adventure.

Smoldering? That was a thing, right? Because he had it in spades.

“What happens if she doesn’t agree to go with you?” King asked.
“Then in a week and a half, I shall kidnap her.”

An what a journey it is, there is no slow build in this one, we jump right in into some kickass action! The opening scene snags us right in and I couldn’t stop reading in after that start. I absolutely adore the way we where presented to this new gang of supernaturals and I’m also beyond psyched to see again some of my fav Darkness peeps, like Cynara.

Lachlan and Star, are the definition of fated mated, and if you follow my reviews you know that is my favorite trope, so these two couldn’t have been more amazing and perfect together. Both are so complex and passionate, loyal and strong, a true pairing of Alphas, and a match made in Heaven. Lachlan was the epitome of Alpha, in all his OTT protective and possessive deliciousness, and I adore every second of it, specially how unapologetic he was about how he felt for her, so swoon worthy!

“The skies are free. If you want to follow after me, be my guest.”
“I will.” His dragon would follow her to the ends of the earth.

“I can carry you in my claws or you can ride on my back. Either way is acceptable.”
“Your back it is.”
“For the record, I would like you to ride me in other ways while we are both naked and—”

He was glad she hadn’t known how to ride him. It meant that she had not flown with a dragon before. He would be her first. He also wanted to be her last.

I don’t know how Ms. Reus does it, but I’m always in awe at the incredibly realistic – even in its supernatural nature – world building and enticing characters. Badass action scenes set in an enrapturing adventure, hilarious banter, deliciously smoldering chemistry in all the couple interactions, as well as smoking hot sexy times, all this topping of an epic love story.

Every single time without fail, and Ancient Protector is the example, I’m not only completely immersed in the main couple’s love story, but also craving to know about every single one of the side characters, as well as rooting that we’ll see their own tales. Yep, this series is already utterly and deeply addictive, and I’m so here for it. That’s right, not only do I want the rest of the dragon’s story, but I NEED Aurora and King’s story ASAP!!! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

I dinnae care what you are. You’re mine, love. That’s all that matters.”

He was…he was her dragon. Always had been, always would be.

“There will never be another for me.”
“There will never be another for me either,”

My review :

Will she be able to trust him enough to let go of her many griefs...

As my first read by Mrs Katie Reus, so also my first foray in her paranormal’s’ universe. As she has a note about an other series, I do suppose this one is related too with some of the visiting characters.
My only reservation is I would have liked to know more about the fall period as the book is set before and after this changing event.
Star and Lachlan are both two very likable characters, and while Star’s true identity is kept a secret until the very end, I figured it out very quickly.
Star while young for a paranormal is a warrior in the soul, she acts like one and her team sees her as one. She bosses them around but always with purposes and rightfully.
Lachlan is no young dragon, after millennia in sleep, he awakens from his chosen hibernation to a very different world from the one he once knew. Yet, it does not change the kind man he is.
While Star refuses any entanglement by fear to seen only for her second half self, thus she tries to avoid Lachlan’s persisting courtship, scared of the consequences if she let herself fall for someone. When he knows he would readily to sacrifice anything for the one woman who brought him back to the living.

It was a very entertaining and fast paced read, as most of the action took place in a short span of time. I loved the many species, and while I have checked who will be figured in the two next books, I hope Aurora/King and Axel and whomever will too have their story.
5 stars for this first in a series.

I was granted an advance copy by the publisher, here is my true and unbiased opinion.

Romance, action, intrigue, supernatural suspense and………
Dragon shifters, as well as other shifters, (cats, wolves, owls etc), witches, vampires, hybrids, demons, yes, this book’s got them all. Oddly enough, I’ve read the four books that come after this (and loved them), and before I indulge in book 6 - Ancient Vengeance, I wanted to read the one that started the series, and I’m so glad I did. Lachlan and Star’s story really sets the stage for those that follow. It’s fast paced, sexy and oh so addictive. As Lachlan and Star try to find the dragons that kidnapped Star’s sister Aurora before they find her. Written mainly in dual POV, but there is the odd additional perspective here and there. A wonderful start to this series and I highly recommend it if you want to venture into the world of supernatural dragon shifters.

This is the first book in the Ancients Rising series and features Star and Lachlan. It is connected to Reus' Darkness series so if you've read those, you'll notice characters from those books. I picked this up because I love any story with dragons. Dragons are my cat nip.

However, I'm not entirely sure how I felt about this book. I think I needed it to be more. I loved the Darkness series and I'm not sure this book was up to par with her Darkness books.

Star is a shifter (although we don't know what kind, just that she's rare and unique) and her sister has been kidnapped by a ruthless and nasty dragon. Star is a famous singer and uses that skill to infiltrate a party that the dragon who has her sister is throwing. Star and her misfit pack rescue Star's sister Aurora but in the process she meets Lachlan. Lachlan is a dragon that has finally awoken from sleeping for a very long time and immediately recognizes Star as his mate. He is at first confused as he lost his mate long ago but something draws him to her. The attraction is there for both of them.

Once Star and her group rescue Aurora, they have to find a way to take down the dragon who hurt Aurora and Lachlan offers his help. Star doesn't immediately want his help but realizes he would be instrumental in taking down the bad guys.

Can Star trust Lachlan and tell him what she is? Will Star let her guard down and be open to what they could be? Can Lachlan help save Star and the rest of the shifter groups?

My biggest problem with this story was I didn't feel like I got a lot of Star and Lachlan time and their characters and relationship just weren't developed enough. I felt disconnected from their intimate moments (which was lacking) and when I read romance I want to feel their love and passion for each other. I'm going to give this book the benefit of the doubt since it's the first in the series. I am looking forward to other characters' stories.

This is the first in a new series. This paranormal post apocalyptic read can be read as a stand alone. I understand it is a spin off from another series by this author. I had not read that and was easily able to follow this along. I did not ever feel like I was missing the joke so to speak.

I love Dragon shifter stories so I was drawn to the synopsis to begin with. And then the author really delivers. Fantastic world building! She lays the groundwork for the reader to want to learn more about this rag tag band of heroes. Star and her group are just as committed to justice and Lachlan and his clan. Loved the settings on both sides of the pond.

Lachlan and Star are mates. It just takes Star a little bit longer to catch up to that fact. Along the way, she fights their attraction. Lots of twist and turns in the story. Keeps you guessing until the end. Great set up for wanting to learn more about this world, who is in power and who will find their HEA next.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for granting my request for an arc of this book. The review below is entirely my own opinion.

This is the first book in a new spinoff series set in the same world as the author’s Darkness series and the circumstances or setting picks up just about right where Darkness Rising ends.

I really liked Lachlan and Star.

He’s an ancient dragon, who just woke up from his Hibernation of thousands of years. He’s an Alpha Laird of a clan of dragons from Scotland. He knows he wants Star and is determined to court and mate her.

Star, otoh, is a superstar singer, and is some kind of supernatural shifter. She doesn’t reveal her animal until later on; although I guessed what kind of shifter she was right away. I thought her powers were really cool!

The story is very interesting and moves quickly. Lachlan and Star’s relationship left me feeling warm and fuzzy. I also liked getting to know Star’s crew of misfits. I’m sure we’ll be seeing more of them in the books to come.

I actually can’t wait to read the next book already. I’m hoping it will be about King and Aurora.

Ancient Protector is the first in the new paranormal romance spin-off series Ancient Risings by Katie Reus. This series is a spin-off of her Darkness series. You do not need to read the Darkness series to enjoy this book. I have not read it, but I believe several of the characters from the other series make an appearance in this book which would be a treat for fans. In fact, I enjoyed this book so much that I have put the Darkness series on my to-be-read-list.

Ancient protector starts off with Star and her friends rescuing her sister from her kidnapper. During the rescue, she meets Lachlan, an ancient dragon that has just woken up from a long hibernation. The attraction is instantaneous and fated so the romance moves quickly. The book is well written with great character development. It has lots of action, with dragon fights in the air and more to keep the story interesting. I highly recommend Katie Reus’s Ancient Protector to anyone who enjoys a good paranormal romance or dragons.

Star is a singer and makes plans to put on a show so she can get closer to Oscar's home. Because she's sure her sister is being held against her will somewhere in Oscar's home and she and her friends are there to help her escape.

Lachlan is at Oscar's estate to watch Star sing and decides to bid on her celebrity auction to have a date with her. But after he wins a date and listens to her sing, all hell breaks loose.

After rescuing her sister Aurora, things get a little dangerous for Star and her friends when a bunch of dragon shifters come after her. But they get help from another dragon shifter who Star is sure was Lachlan because of his coloring. She's not sure why he helped her but she's thankful but when he finds her while they're in hiding and says he wants his date now, she doesn't trust him. I can understand why she doesn't trust him after hearing what all she and her sister have been through especially with dragon shifters. But he more than proves that he can be trusted and she let's him into her circle where he worms his way into her heart little by little.

When Oscar comes after her sister again, it's Lachlan and the another alpha named King that help them. This story had me on the edge of my seat. The action was great, the romance was so sweet and heartbreaking at times that it really made me feel for them. They had been through so much over the years.

Star and Aurora have spent their whole lives protecting and hiding what type of shifter they are and while I tried to figure it out, I couldn't find out until it was revealed to me. It was a really fun twist that had me smiling. I really liked the interaction between King and Aurora and hope they get their own book in the future. I'm looking forward to reading more of this series now.

Disclosure: I was given an ARC via NetGalley but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Okay another hit of a series, I'm predicting! This is the opening book to this series and as sci-fi series it takes me a bit to get into it but I was pretty hooked almost from the beginning of this one.

You'll love the characters and the descriptions of each person and who and what they are. Supernaturals abound in this book and I cannot wait to read more.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
