This beautiful short story is a book within a book. It is perfectly complete in itself, while also nesting comfortably within the World War 1 collection by Susan Lanigan. A tender, intelligent and well-researched story (but wearing its research lightly). Beautiful evocations of moments in time.

Note: I listened to the audiobook; the narrator wasn't overly pleasant to listen to.
