A story within a story, a moment between two wars. A harrowing read, but a gripping one.

This beautiful short story is a book within a book. It is perfectly complete in itself, while also nesting comfortably within the World War 1 collection by Susan Lanigan. I absolutely loved her debut novel - White Feathers and have been eagerly anticipating her next – Lucia’s War - due out next month.

This short story of five chapters is a clever introduction to Lanigan’s latest book which is due out in May 2020. It has a strong opening, bringing us straight into a forbidden love story set in 1938. Lanigan’s sense of place and time are authentically portrayed. Flashbacks to WW1 and her character Christopher who we met in her first novel -White Feathers - adds a sense of familiarity.
