Chloe Rose and the Enchanted Maze is middle-grade fantasy novel geared more towards girls, but both genders can read and enjoy this story.

The story follows Chloe, a young girl who lives with her parents in the town of Wilmoton. But when her dad passes away during a war and her mom remarries the King, Chloe is thrust into a life she doesn't want. Add in a mean stepsister, and Chloe goes from happy to miserable and forlorn. This book follows Chloe and Edith as they go threw a maze to get what their heart most desires. For Chloe, it’s having closure after her fathers death. For Edith, it’s finding her parents. They do get what their heart most desires at the end of the book. Even if that means it changes.

I enjoyed the short chapters of the story. It made me feel like I was reading a lot. Also, I enjoyed the pictures in the book. The art work was phenomenal in this book.

This was a very cute story about two characters on a path to finding closure. One about the death of a parent. The other about finding their parents.
The writing could have been a little bit better, but overall a very lovely story with lovely pictures.

I didn't like the plot of the book and as I kept reading it I found myself losing my interest more and more (almost DNF'ed it).

This one’s cover and description really called to me, but unfortunately I didn’t enjoy it.

I really didn’t enjoy this book, I didn’t enjoy the protagonist or her family and friends at all, I didn’t like the way it was poorly written and I didn’t like the lessons that were being taught in it.

The cover and synopsis drew me into this book. Thought it would be a fun little imaginative story. However, I couldn’t get passed the first chapter. I found the writing style very clunky and too much emphasis on random descriptions.

Edit: I don't think I was really in the mood for this kind of story/reading in general when I picked this up, which might have heavily influenced my negative reaction. I would like to go back and give this another try to be more fair. I'll update this when I do. ...more

Chloe Rose is not a perfect book, but I'm not sure I agree with some other reviewers that it's too simplistic or not didactic enough. The story centers around Chloe, who loses her father due to what's basically a historical-fantasy-land version of the military industrial complex. (Mindless feuding, poverty, etc.) Chloe then spends the book basically trying to adjust to her new life.

At first, that means she must try to adjust to a new home and a new step-dad, plus a step-sister that hates her. That's not easy. Then, she decides that she doesn't want to be bullied (of course), so she tries to "solve" her grief (as if that's possible) through a magical maze. What she ends up discovering is not only a path towards healing her heart, but also that a way she is able to start to heal her grief is by making friends with other young ladies who have experienced the same thing. The three main characters, Chloe, Thyra, and Edith, have all lost part or all of their families tragically. Thyra actually lost her dad in the same seemingly mindless war in which Chloe lost hers. All three of them adventure together but also learn to grieve productively together. They heal by being a support system for one another. Along the way, they also realize that nothing in life is black and white or night and day, even mean stepsisters and fairy magic and grief.

The story is not necessarily about Chloe becoming nicer--many reviewers have pointed out that she's relatively nice, if not a little bossy, throughout--but it is about her changing by dealing with her feelings amongst friends who can empathize. It's fair to critique the writing style if it's not the reviewer's favorite, but I don't agree that there is no message. The message is fundamentally about letting children know the grief is a journey, one that we never quite finish. The book also emphasizes the importance of friendship and family. [A side note: 2/3 main characters are non-white. Chloe is mixed-race (and her Black mother is said to be the most beautiful in the land), and Thyra is black. I think it's unique to see that represented on a children's book cover.] The book also sets up Book #2 well, I think, with the hope of exploring more about the warring towns and the murky morality underlying the story's magical system. ...more

She sets out to find a magical maze where she hopes she'll find answers and turn her life around in a way she feels comfortable in. She befriends a girl, Edith, and another friend, Thyra, joins her on this quest. Whilst they're in there time outside of the maze seem to go must faster and I think the girls spend several years (in normal time) in this enchanted place.

I gather that this book might be intended for children in perhaps second or third grade as the language is pretty simple and straight-forward as well as the chapters just being a few pages each. With this said, the overall story is very bland and pretty boring as well as extremely fast-paced which means that you - as the reader - don't get invested in Chloe's journey through the maze or in Chloe herself. Everything that happens is put in a sort of "first this happened, and then this, and then this" - there also seems like there's no consequences what so ever. There's nothing, really, of great interest that takes place. Chloe already is a kind and smart girl so the journey through the maze doesn't really make her, as a character different - she doesn't learn anything. I didn't notice any, shall we say, "pedagogic pointers" in the book either (and this is pretty common in books (and other media) directed to young children) so to teach, perhaps, the friendship is important, standing up for others or anything similar.

As a story it just is. Nothing more, nothing less. ...more
