Rules of the Secret Society of Young Widows: Rule 1: Be a widow. Rule 2: Have an impeccable reputation. Rule 3: Don't fall in love again.
AN HEIR TO SPARE by Rebecca Connolly Widowhood has changed much for Anna—Lady Lyndham—but an unconventional heir to the estate was not something she had anticipated. Nor had she anticipated that he would have no intention of forcing her out, although he has every right to. And she certainly did not anticipate finding him handsome, charming, and unfailingly generous. But Ned Richards, the new Lord Lyndham, has a world of surprises in store for her, and not anticipating them will become quite the adventure.
THE WIDOW OF LAVENDER COTTAGE by Jen Geigle Johnson As a widow, Lillian Hunter has never been in love and plans to never marry again, so the rules of the Secret Society of Young Widows suit her just fine. Her days are spent attempting to transform her newly inherited Lavender Cottage into a livable space until Oliver Wentworth shows up, asking for her late husband. Anxious to establish himself as a landed gentry in Somerset, Oliver is none too pleased to discover that a widow lives alone in a tiny run down cottage bordering his new property. The fact that she’s young and attractive only adds frustration to his sense of responsibility over her. And confound her, she challenges his every attempt to help manage her affairs.
A PROMISE FORGOTTEN by Heather B. Moore Charlotte Ashford never thought she’d marry a vicar, and she never thought she’d find herself widowed with a young child to care for on her own. She certainly never thought she’d return to Somerset to live with her mother again, and Charlotte never thought she’d see him again. But Lord Wilshore has never forgotten her, and he has never forgotten their promise made long ago. Charlotte would love nothing more than for Lord Wilshore to forgive her, but too much heartache and too much time might make that impossible. Friendship is all she can hope for, but that hope may be dashed as well.
I was born once upon a time, and I started making up stories right away. Eventually, I started writing them down, and never stopped! I have a day job, which gets in the way of my writing, but it pays the bills so I CAN write, so I guess that's okay! I am a bookworm, which I think is key to being a writer, and I am always looking for inspiration! I live in Indiana, am obsessed with hot chocolate, and I am on track to be the best aunt in the world.
Fabulous collection! One of my favorites. I put a few thoughts for each novella below! If you're a Regency fan and a novella fan, this is one I think you'll enjoy! These three authors are all on my favorites list! I know I can't go wrong with any of their books! And these widows...I loved their strength and the healing we get to see as the reader. Enjoy!
To be part of the secret widows group the ladies have to follow 3 simple rules. Sounds simple right? Rule 1: Be a widow. Rule 2: Have an impeccable reputation. Rule 3: Don't fall in love again.
~AN HEIR TO SPARE~ by Rebecca Connolly ~5*~ Be still my heart! I absolutely adored Ned and Anna! Anna's husband Lord Lyndham left her with nothing in his will for her to care for herself. She's reeling from the implications of that. But at least she has her home...until the next heir shows up and she's truly left with nothing and nowhere to turn. Yet, he's nothing like the previous Lord Lyndham. Ned's personality was the best! I loved his care to help others and do what is right. Watching his and Anna's friendship grow was the best!!!
The Widow of Lavendar Cottage ~ by Jen Geigle Johnson ~ 5* ~ If you are a fan of meet cutes that are funny and slightly embarrassing this one certainly fills that description. Lillian and Oliver are now neighbors as she moves to Somerset. With a bit of a property dispute amongst themselves, some spunk and fortitude on both their parts, they'll have to be quick on their feet when around each other. They were both great characters and I love how they both learned to realize who the other was and not expect them to change. The walks by the property line were very enlightening! ;-) And there were plenty of moments where Oliver walks into a situation head on not realizing what will happen when he does. Don't worry...his impulsiveness created lots of great fodder. I loved Lillian and Oliver's sweet budding romance as well. Plenty of sweet swoony moments! And I might need to make some chocolate covered cinnamon bears soon after reading this one! Yum!!!
A Promise Forgotten ~ by Heather B. Moore ~ 5* ~ And this one was fabulous to finish off the collection! Charlotte and Brand were childhood friends who fell in love. Unfortunately life brings unexpected changes and heartbreaks that pulled them apart. Now they're given a second chance but the question is can forgiveness be given and hearts allowed to heal? I have to admit that I shed a few tears in this one (probably shed a few tears throughout the whole book). The emotions of these characters were tender and I loved the small moments of them together, especially the first couple encounters. This almost had a Jane Austen's, Persuasion, vibe to it. Which happens to be my favorite book by her. It tugged at my heart strings and had me smiling and laughing. Especially laughing at Charlotte's mom and Brand's sister. Their antics were great! Loved the romance in this one as well. Sweet, tender and swoony! *happy sigh* And one of my favorite parts was the dance. *grinning giddily*
This collection is fabulous! And I loved the lessons that the secret widows society were given. I'd love to see another collection with more of the widows, especially Lady Joanna's story (possibly another courtship for her), and the constantly crying widow at the meetings (can't remember her name). Or even use Lady Joanna's story (with her second husband's courtship would be awesome) as a Timeless Romance Single. *grinning hopefully* Just a thought...
Content: Clean. Some kisses but nothing further.
I received a copy from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
What a great collection of regency romances! These were all very good. The first was my fav, but Rebecca gets me. Secretly I think she writes her books just for me. Honestly they just hit the spot. The other two I figured I would just like but hey I really liked the others too. Just a good collection.
Widows of Somerset (2020, Mirror Press), 15th in the Timeless Regency Collection series, includes three Regency novellas, each by a different author. Each novella in this collection features a member of the Secret Society of Young Widows, but each can be read independently of the others.
From the blurb:"Widowhood has changed much for Anna—Lady Lyndham—but an unconventional heir to the estate was not something she had anticipated. Nor had she anticipated that he would have no intention of forcing her out, although he has every right to. And she certainly did not anticipate finding him handsome, charming, and unfailingly generous."
What I liked: Anna and Ned both down-to-earth and sweet. Anna is in a highly stressful situation - her husband did not properly make provisions for her in his will. I loved this story. The characters felt realistic and they were very likable. ------------------------------------------------
From the blurb:"As a widow, Lillian Hunter has never been in love and plans to never marry again, so the rules of the Secret Society of Young Widows suit her just fine. Her days are spent attempting to transform her newly inherited Lavender Cottage into a livable space until Oliver Wentworth shows up, asking for her late husband."
What I liked: As in the previous story, the two protagonists are humble people. They both engaged in physical labor that should be "beneath" them, but they find a satisfaction in the work. Lillian is resistant to remarrying, and that brings a unique flavor to the story, in a realistic way.
From the blurb:" Charlotte Ashford never thought she’d marry a vicar, and she never thought she’d find herself widowed with a young child to care for on her own. She certainly never thought she’d return to Somerset to live with her mother again, and Charlotte never thought she’d see him again. But Lord Wilshore has never forgotten her, and he has never forgotten their promise made long ago."
What I liked: I liked that the hero's and the heroine's points-of-view are so relatable. He was upset that she didn't wait for him to fulfill his promise. She was young and convinced that he was dead after such a long time with no news. So this is a "lost love" story. Lost and found. One of my favorite types.
------------------------------------------------
Other Recommendation:A Holiday In Bath, another in the Timeless Regency Collection that I've enjoyed.
The bottom line: These Timeless Regency collections are lovely. They're my jam. This group of authors write lovely novellas, and I feel confident that I will continue to read the Timeless line. I recommend this book to lovers of Regency romance, historical romance, and clean romance.
Romance, clean, period; series, but stand alone read Edit, on a second read, this was so enjoyable! REally well done. I'm putting my review up to a 4.5 (rounding up to 5) Lovely regency period novella collection. All told from alternating points of view. It was nice to see both MC thoughts and feelings as they interacted and 'found' each other. Basic premise for all is woman widowed moving to Somerset and joining with Lady Joanna's society for widows to help them stand on their own, gain financial independence, and learn how to have more control over their finances and their futures. Plus, some great H in the mix too! I loved RC first novella in the series. For me the strongest voice of this group of novellas in terms of voicing and consistent flow. All of them had strong MC and some good side characters. The setting and integrating Lady Joanna and the other widows in each story was cleverly done, and consistent between each novella. I loved how different each novella was, but yet how well they fit together as a whole in the collection. Refreshing to see each woman gain in experience, confidence and find someone who completed them, respected them, and helped make them financially independent, along with stealing their hearts. Sweet clean romance, and well worth the escape! I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review, my opinion is my own.
There is so much to love about this book and these three stories! All three of these authors are fantastic and they have created such a fun premise for these stories. A society of widows who educate themselves so that the varying situations of destitution never happen to them again. I really love this- women helping other women to succeed.
All three of these stories are lovely. Both the female and male leads in all books are smart, strong and just all around good people. (Anna and Ned might be my favorite!) The stories have a consistency to them with the overlapping of some secondary characters. It made the stories feel interwoven and I liked that.
The stories were very romantic and made my heart happy. There were plenty of emotional moments and fun moments. There was growth and there was love. All had fantastic happily ever afters. It was perfect! 💙

- I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
Loved this anthology by these authors! These are three of my favorite authors and I loved that they wrote an anthology together. I loved each of the stories individually but I also loved how each connected to each other through the Secret Widow Society set up by Lady Joanna. I loved how her goal was to make sure that the young widows wouldn’t do something so dumb as to fall in love without making sure to protect themselves financially. I really did love this book and it will be one that I read again.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
In all three of these stories the widows are invited into a widow’s society ran by a very prestigious widow. She teaches them how to care for themselves and how to understand wills and other paperwork so they can be independent. Each story has a gentlemen trying to also help the widow in the story. The romance were sweet and the story enjoyable. I loved reading the growth each widow went through.
Excellent read! I was a little worried that it would be repetitive with three stories about widows in the same “secret society” but they really pulled it off well! So much that I’d like to read about more of those society members! Fun, clean, sweet romance novellas!
Romance, clean, period. The Widows of Somerset are three stand alone stories by three different authors. While each widow’s story is unique and stands alone, there is a ribbon of interconnectedness that is cohesive and exciting and does not feel forced. My love of Rebecca Connolly’s work initially made me excited to read this but I’m happy to have found new authors to explore as well. I’m a big fan of this genre, but generally the love stories told are reserved for the young debutants. What a refreshing, and sometimes heartbreaking, perspective to hear the story of a young widow, in a time where everything was decided for her.
An Heir to Spare by Rebecca Connolly This was a charming novella, I enjoyed our characters Anna and Ned (not a fan of the name Ned for a hero...at all). I liked when you meet someone and you just fall into easy conversation, you just understand each other. That's what it felt like with Anna and Ned, despite having just met and the unusual circumstances, they just fall into easy conversation and friendship. I thought they had a nice romance and just an overall enjoyable read.
The Widow of Lavender Cottage by Jen Giegle Johnson I like the neighbors-to-lovers trope. Both Lillian and Oliver are new to Somerset, Lillian having been given Lavender Cottage to live after her husband passes. While Oliver, has worked hard and been successful in life and finally able to purchase his own estate. I thought they had a nice relationship that progressed at a believable pace. Good chemistry and overall fun story.
A Promise Forgotten by Heather B Moore A sweet second-chance love story. Fearing the love of her life has died, and pressured by her mother, Charlotte marries. Soon after, she finds herself a widow with a young child. She returns to her childhood home to discover things are not as they seem. She also has to face the man who she thought was dead, and is alive and well. I enjoyed this one quite a bit, Charlotte and Brand had a nice relationship and good tension. I liked the overall story and thought it was a good read.
Overall, this was a fun collection. I enjoyed the story and thought it was a pleasant way to pass the time.
Content: All are clean, mild kissing. No language or violence.
I loved this collection--the cover is gorgeous, the stories sweet yet swoony and they're written by three of my favorite authors! What more could a hopeless romantic and historical fiction lover ask for except longer stories? These collections have a common theme running through them and this time they're all young widows gathered together by Lady Joanna into a Secret Widow Society. There are only three rules: Rule 1: Be a widow; Rule 2: Have an impeccable reputation; and Rule 3: Don't fall in love again.
AN HEIR TO SPARE~ by Rebecca Connolly (5 stars)--My heart is still swooning over this one. Anna and the previous Lord Lyndham didn't have children so there's no heir to inherit anything. He left her with barely enough money to survive on, and to make matters worse (yes, they can get worse), once the new Lord Lyndham arrives Anna will be homeless. When the new Lord Lyndham arrives he's not at all what Anna expected. I loved how sweet Ned was to Anna, whose husband left her with nothing. Lady Joanna intrigued me because she was so very different than all the ladies of that time--teaching women how to look out for themselves financially. This was a great start to a wonderful book.
THE WIDOW OF LAVENDER COTTAGE~ by Jen Geigle Johnson (5 stars)--Lillian Hunter is trying to optimistic. Her deceased husband left her a small cottage on some land and enough of an allowance that paid for a cook, a butler and a maid. The name Lavender Cottage sounds so charming, too bad it's been neglected and is in need of a deep cleaning and some repairs. Cleaning the cottage is what leads to a hilarious meeting with the owner of the neighboring estate, Oliver Wentworth. I loved watching Lillian and Oliver go from being slightly adversarial neighbors, to friends to more all while learning the history of their respective properties. Again Lady Joanna is there to welcome Lillian to the society and help her learn to stand up for herself.
A PROMISE FORGOTTEN~ by Heather B. Moore (5 stars)--Widowed after only a few months of marriage and discovering she was pregnant shortly thereafter, Charlotte Ashford's life isn't what she'd dreamt of as a young woman. But here she is with her baby returning to her hometown of Somerset to live with her controlling mother near the man she had cared for and promised to marry, Bran Wilshore. This story really tugged at my heartstrings. Not just for Charlotte but for her mother's situation as well. I loved Thea and how she got Bran involved. I loved how Charlotte used the knowledge taught to her by Lady Joanna to not only help herself, but help her mother. This story also has a strong element of forgiveness because Bran needed to forgive Charlotte for what happened several years before. Even though there were serious elements there were also such tender, swoony moments.
I loved all of the stories in this collection. I loved the theme of young widows and a secret society that would help them avoid being in their current situation should they marry again. These stories have heart, humor, forgiveness, and love.
I received a complimentary copy. All thoughts and opinions expressed in my review are my own.
This was a really fun Regency Collection that will release this fall.
What I liked: Lady Joanna taking all of the young widows under her wing! She taught these women how to manage their finances, talk to their solicitors, and what to look for in wills and wedding settlements. I liked how Lady Joanna and her widows kept popping up in each story, asking prospective suitors awkward questions about their intentions. They just had each other's backs. They added some humor to the story. I liked Lady Lyndham and Lord Lyndham in An Heir to Spare. I liked the delicious awkwardness of their sharing a name, yet not being connected. Lord Lyndham, Ned, was so considerate of Anna and her needs. I loved how Lillian and Oliver Wentworth in The Widow of Lavender Cottage were both not afraid to work. They worked alongside their tenants, and befriended their servants (which seemed very forward thinking for that time period). I liked seeing Charlotte Ashford and Brand untangle the web of their history, disappointed hopes, and their future.
What I didn't like: Not much! The only complaint I have is Lady Joanna's "rule" of remarry, but don't fall in love. Each of these stories involved a heroine falling in love, and Lady Joanna seemed to support them. I think her rule really was, don't leap into a second marriage without thought, because you're in love. Be practical about your support, but certainly, fall in love!
All in all, I loved this collection! I would love to see more stories about the Widows of Somerset!
Content: clean (no language, no violence, some kisses)
A sweet, clean collection of stories about widows who find themselves in less than ideal circumstances — who manage to find independence AND love, thanks to Lady Joanna, who's been there, done that, and wants to help other unfortunate women.
Rebecca Connelly, Jen Geigle Johnson, and Heather B. Moore are all masters at the regency romance novella, managing to pull me in right from the start and keep me interested.
I was given an ARC, and would happily recommend this set.
I adore the Timeless Romance collections. It is fun to have novellas from some of my favorite authors in one book.
This collection features widows who are part of a group. They have a widowed patron who teaches them about independence and practicality in marriage rather than love.
Her plan works well, three of the widows meet their match and fall in love. The characters are fun to read.
If you have not picked up a Timeless Romance collection to read, now is the time.
As a collection, these three tales mesh together extremely well, all sharing the interesting similarity of a “secret society” of young widows who meet for tea on a regular basis.
I loved this anthology. I can't imagine being a widow during a time when women didn't have rights. I loved Lady Joanna and her society and care for these widows. It's awesome.
An Heir to Spare - Ned and Anna are such a cute couple. I loved their easy relationship and how simply it grew. Ned is such a good guy. You can't help but love him. He was so good to Anna. I loved the Epilogue. It was so sweet.
The Widow of Lavender Cottage - This was a fun story. I loved Lillian's strength and determination. I loved Oliver's desire to help her, but also to allow her independence as well. They were so sweet together. I am very happy for them.
A Promise Forgotten - Brand and Charlotte have quite a history and some hurt to overcome. I understand both their sides and really felt for them. Luckily in the end love conquers all.
A Secret Society of Widows Three stories of young widows who have been left without much means to provide for themselves. A secret society that teaches the group of widows how to manage their affairs in a man’s world. And rules. One being - No falling in love if they get remarried. One loses their senses when in love and doesn’t think of the future. Love can come later. So what happens when these widows do fall in love? How do they safeguard themselves for the future? Enjoyed reading these three short stories. Liked the common thread of the widows society between the three, but each written in their own style. Have read books by all three authors before (love them all!) and these stories mesh well together for having different writers. I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
What does inheriting a house with someone already in it and a property dispute between neighbors and being shipwrecked have in common? That is why you need to read this sweet book of three young widows in a trying time. The three authors hold up to their usual standards and write great plot lines and characters. It was a fun read and I highly recommend it!
Probably of one of my favourite anthologies from the Timeless collection! Very nice and original. I liked the protagonists, they all had interesting personalities and backgrounds that were well explored in some few pages. The romances were very sweet, although I found that most of them were "solved" very quickly, over a few days or weeks. The link between all three novellas (the Society) was interesting, if slightly underdeveloped. It would be worth exploring it more in another book, because there was some potential to it. Would recommend!
*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review*
This collection of three sweet romances set in Somerset were DELIGHTFUL! Each was expertly written. The characters were amazing! Each story made me simply giddy! WONDERFUL!
I thoroughly enjoyed this collection of stories! I can happily recommend it for anyone who enjoys clean Regency Era romance novels. This collection has three wonderful authors who have developed such beautifully sweet and funny characters and storylines. I would eagerly read another book following on with this collection - whether it be compiled together like this or individually by each author, I wouldn’t mind in the least! There is so much potential and scope for carrying on with this particular storyline with so many of the extra characters mentioned - particularly with how the story by Jen Geigle Johnson finished. I was super intrigued and seriously did not want it to end. But no spoilers. No spoilers! 🙅🏼♀️ I’ll leave the review here, except to say again that I loved the characters in these stories. I loved the stories themselves. They’re all clean and wholesome with feel good endings, the only problem being that they come to an end. Sigh. I received an ARC of this book however this in no way influenced my opinion. I am not obligated to leave this review. All thoughts expressed are my own.
These were lovely short stories. Three quick reads with wonderful characters, fun storylines and happy endings. The first story was my favorite. And I loved the young widows society and Lady Joanna.
4.5 Stars overall, fun and unique anthology! Whenever I see a collaboration by Rebecca Connolly, Jen Geigle Johnson, and Heather B. Moore I know I'm in for a treat. These three authors do a great job of connecting settings and characters and this fun Timeless Regency Collection is no exception to that talent. The idea of having each main character be a widow was definitely fresh and I loved seeing them all learn what true love can be. An Heir to Spare by Rebecca Connolly 4.5 stars I think the hero in this one was my favorite. Ned was so humble and genuine, his character made me laugh and cheer throughout the story. I liked the funny play on him being the new Lord Lyndham and the confusion as he and Anna fell in love. The epilogue was a great wrap up to this fun story too and I am so glad we got that future glimpse. The Widow of Lavender Cottage by Jen Geigle Johnson 4.5 stars This was such a cute love story between a rising gentleman and an independent widow. My favorite aspect was the secondary tale with the properties that mirrored the love story of the couple. This had such a sweet cast of characters; I loved both the main characters and the helpful and loving servants we see throughout. A Promise Forgotten by Heather B. Moore 5 stars I was honestly a little surprised this novella was my favorite of the three since I started off expecting to dislike that Charlotte had broken her promise and the heartache it caused. However, the chemistry in this one was strongest for me and I enjoyed really feeling the bond and love Charlotte and Brand shared along with the growth that their experiences brought them. I received an advance reader copy of this anthology. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
When I saw the cover for this book I thought, "That woman looks a little saucy. These stories could be on the edgy side of clean romance." But that was not true at all. They were perfectly clean. The sauciness may be more from being bold enough to take a hold of their lives and make things better. So, determined may be a better term.
One of the key things that makes me admire someone's writing is if I read the story without thinking about the writing at all. All I see is the story itself. The words flow to show the story without standing out on their own. In other words, the words flow so naturally that nothing sticks out as odd or out of place. This book was one of those. Even with three different authors. Each one told their story very well. The secret society of young widows is a marvelous theme through all three stories, tying them together but each told different stories.
An Heir to Spare by Rebecca Connolly: I LOVED Ned! Such a fun hero. And Anna was wonderful to watch as she learned how to watch out for her own needs. Also it was fun to watch her personality come out instead of being what everyone expected of her position.
The Widow of Lavender Cottage by Jen Geigle Johnson: First off, the setting for this cottage sounds so beautiful. Again, I really liked this hero. Oliver had what I call a Prince Charming complex, wanting to save the damsel in distress. Lillian had no desire to be saved which of course leads to the conflict of the story. I loved that she was willing to get her hands dirty to fix her inherited home up instead of depending on her servants or her neighbor. She was stubbornly strong. I also loved that though Oliver wanted to help her, he was also willing to give her all the independence she desired to make her happy making him truly Prince Charming and more.
A Promise Forgotten by Heather B. Moore: This one was the saddest of the three stories I think. Both characters underwent heartbreak. I loved how Charlotte's daughter seemed to be the tie to bring the main character's together for their second chance at love. I thought bringing someone back from the dead and the other widowed was a great combination for the story.
I don't often read Regency romance that focuses on widows as the main characters so this was a fun departure. I loved Lady Joanna and her desires to teach feminism to women who were otherwise helpless. It was unfortunately true that women were largely dependent on the men in their lives so teaching women to depend on themselves would be novel.
No sex, language or violence *I received a complimentary ARC of this book and voluntarily chose to write a review.
What do you get when you cross three amazing regency writers and the premise of improving the lot of young widows? You get three amazing stories that give you independent women and the men that would do anything to make sure they have the best future possible.
These women all belong to the same club. A club for the betterment of widows who have been left with no provision in a world where women are powerless. The idea is to give them power should they remarry again. One of the rules, don’t fall in love.
I think the women in this story were almost afraid to fall in love, which only adds to the enjoyment.
I recommend this for anyone that needs three shorter reads or anyone that just enjoys a good story.
Widows of Somerset was a relaxing, fun read. I felt like it was an easy summer read. It was fun to get swept up into the characters' world. The authors, Rebecca Connolly, Jen Geigle Johnson, and Heather B. Moore, collaborated on the setting and the characters. Some of the characters carried through from story to story. The characters that were shared within stories remained constant in character and personality. The romances were simple and engaging. I could have used more detail and the pace felt off at times, but other than that it was a decent read. The stories were clean. Readers who enjoy the Regency romance genre will enjoy this read.
Please note that I received a free copy to review, however, this is my honest opinion.
Widows of Somerset is part of the Timeless Regency series. It is a collection of three stories by three different authors. These stories include: An Heir to Spare by Rebecca Connolly The Widow of Lavender Cottage by Jen Geigle Johnson A Promise Forgotten by Heather B. Moore I could not pick a favorite among the three as I loved every one of them equally. I am giving it five stars. Readers who enjoy quick Regency era romances, will want to pick this one up. I received this book from the author, but was not required to write a review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
Excellent collection! Three separate stories revolving around widows who come to live in the town of Somerset. I loved the camaraderie in the society for widows. The empowerment of the ladies in their own situations was inspiring for the time period this was written for. 'An Heir to Spare' was my favorite, then 'A Promise Forgotten' closely followed. The 'Widow of Lavender Cottage' I would give four stars. Very enjoyable characters. Clean romance. Highly recommended.
I received this book for an honest review; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
It was fun to read these 3 novellas. All three were sweet romances with female protagonists ready for true love and the men who fall in love with them. What makes this compilation stand out was the focus on the plight of young widows, something I have not seen discussed much in sweet, clean romances. I've really only seen it discussed in Jane Austen's works of Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, and Persuasion.
Each widow has a different story of how their widowhood has made them poor or destitute, and at some point all of them reach a point of desiring independence. The men who fall in love not only fall in love, but grow to understand what these widows have been through and seem happy to make sure that legally these widows are protected.
Personally, I would love to see this idea of a group of widows meeting together to support each other and learn more about finances explored more in depth. The short courtship required in a novella didn't give the authors enough time for more than one meeting. I hope one of these authors is able to take it further.
This book was a fun read, and I enjoyed exploring this topic. Thanks for sending me a copy!
