Read this book for my toddler's bedtime. Great book told by a caterpillar in a rhyming way. The caterpillar introduced each bug and there are facts about each of them. I love the ending of this picture book because it gave young readers hand on activity pages to work on. There are mazes where the honeybees travel to a flower and my toddler got to draw a line around the maze. There are matching games where my toddler drew a line from word to bug and from bug shapes to bug. There are bug pattern games. There's the bug hide and seek for my toddler to find hidden in the leaves. My toddler loved this book! She got to learn about spider, honeybees, ladybug, caterpillar, and many more!
Thank you Callisto Kids for the opportunity to read and review!
This is a wonderful introduction to the world of bugs for young children! I believe even older preschoolers will be able to predict which bug will come next, and grab the concepts/ facts about different bugs.
I thought the activities in the back of the book will help children solidify the concepts presented in the book.
“The Backyard Bug Book for Kids,” by Lauren Davidson, is an adorable nonfiction tale of a small caterpillar on his way to becoming a beautiful butterfly! On his journey he meets many insects who tell little facts about themselves to their audience. From learning about anatomy, eating habits, and even physical abilities the book ends with a great activity book for children! I really enjoyed reading this short book and thought it would be a great book to read in science class for young children. Perhaps as a preface to a bug study project?
This book about backyard bugs as seen through the eyes of a monarch caterpillar is informative and has a wide variety of common bugs in it. It bothered me a little that the book did not explain what type of caterpillar or butterfly the main character was. But the format was clever. I liked the combination of story-telling and fact-giving. There are cool activities in the back that children will love.
I love the way this book uses the ever-popular process of butterfly metamorphosis to introduce its audience to so many fun facts about other fascinating insects! The story is written in a fun and whimsical rhyme that is sure to capture the interest of and engage young minds immediately. The photos used to illustrate the story provide a up-close view of so many different backyard bugs that many of us have never had the opportunity to see in such detail.
Conner has picked up so much from this book. Between this and the Hungry Caterpillar he's ready to tell you all about a chrysalis and the life cycle of a caterpillar. Just this weekend he identified a rolypoly in the garden as well. A good first book on bugs and birthday gift from his Pepere.
This is a fun story book that also gives you plenty of fun and interesting facts about bugs. It also gives you some fun activities that you can do. I highly recommend.
I don't think this will fit with the content of my future classes so I doubt I have it in my future classroom.

A wonderful book filled with facts about familiar insects as discovered by a caterpillar. The story is accompanied by close-up photographs. What I really liked is that it is not too wordy – it will keep the attention of children it’s geared for. At the end of the book are activities designed for 3-5 year olds. Good size book with sturdy pages.
