This series is so cute.

Valentine's/White Day theme for this one mostly, with the kind of misunderstandings you would (and perhaps would not) expect.

MORE KATAI, MORE KATAI. I love how mostly everyone is scared of him because of his intimidating exterior but he's a soft marshmallow inside.

Also, Komi's parents as teenagers? Omg absolutely adorable.

This manga is just such a comfy read and makes me happy. Nice to have something like this right now.

Volume 9 contains that standard trope of school based manga, the entire Valentines-White Day arc, but this series has one of the most heartwarming and funniest depictions of it.

Another enjoyable installment in this series with Komi Can't Communicate, Vol. 9. This volume focuses on the pretty typical Valentine's Day/White Day theme, but it is sweetly (and funnily) done with a lot more focus on the friendship aspect. I do love that Komi is starting to improve and take the initiative more, it's been so much fun to see her grow! Tadano as well! I look forward to seeing what the next volume brings. ...more

Komi still can’t communicate. Oh, and Valentine’s Day is approaching. Is Tadano in for a sweet ending or will Komi’s homemade chocolate see his hopes whisked away?

There is no chance for this volume to measure up to the adorable school trip arc from last time, but it does have some real high points. The entire Valentine’s section is pretty fun, showing a lot of welcome cast interaction beyond the leads.

I love the incredible number of fake-outs with Tadano’s storyline (which carries over to White Komi still can’t communicate. Oh, and Valentine’s Day is approaching. Is Tadano in for a sweet ending or will Komi’s homemade chocolate see his hopes whisked away?

I love the incredible number of fake-outs with Tadano’s storyline (which carries over to White Day); it was really executed well, and I especially liked the way his sister got involved. In some ways he is just as bad as Komi, which has me hoping that in the end she’s the one with the confidence to confess. That would be pretty much perfect.

The two new characters are fun - I think the overly helpful girl is probably my favourite of the two (she REALLY cannot say no). The other one is pleasant until ogre mode engages, but we never see it happen so it’s a bit of a dud. I love the way her hair is drawn through the whole thing though - it’s great design work.

By far my absolute favourite section is a chapter showing Komi’s mom meeting and falling for her dad. I normally hate these sorts of flashbacks, but the dynamic between them is so damn charming that it’s completely irresistible. More of this please.

The biggest downside is going to be a total broken record from me, but I despise Yamai, the girl with the psychotic crush on Komi. I realize it’s being played for laughs, but it isn’t funny. Crossing lines and making people with anxiety disorders uncomfortable doesn’t go far with me.

It was also a bummer to see the school trip duo sidelined. I mean, I knew it would happen, but they were the best additions to the cast in ages. I’m glad they got a little to do, but it wasn’t near enough (and this shogi chapter was much lamer than the last one).

3 stars. Most of this is a 3.5, but my unending disdain for Yamai negates any rounding up. I’m quite serious when I say she is a blight on an otherwise pleasant book. ...more

This was a sweet, funny, and heartwarming volume. The opening chapter really set the mood for the rest of the volume and it was great seeing the cast interact with others outside their usual friend groups. I also enjoyed Onigashima's and Sato's introductions but for different reasons. Onigashima really hits home because I too get easily flustered and have specific ways of calming down, and Sato's so generous and helpful it's hard not to like her. Komi is super popular despite her aloof reputation. Only timid Tadano seems to notice that she doesn't talk... ever! When she reaches out to him on the first day of class he quickly realizes it's awkwardness holding her back. Now he'll become her first friend in her quest to make 100 friends.

I never find myself bored by this series, but not every chapter is a “wowzer” for me. The chapters can be hit or miss within one volume. Thus, by the time I finish a new installment, I can’t always be praiseworthy about the whole thing. There were plenty of cute moments between Komi and Tadano in this volume, though!!

Komi makes chocolate for her friends and even Tadano but is embarrassed to give it to him so does not receive any chocolate.

KOMI CAN'T COMMUNICATE #9 introduces a few new classmates, pushes Komi out of her comfort zone (more than once), and resumes that odd, comical miscalculation of convincing onlookers that Katai and Tadano might actually have a thing for each other. Whatever the case, Valentine's Day is the volume's backdrop, making for a fun and worthwhile, if inevitable opportunity to explore how Komi and Tadano feel about one another in a markedly public environment. Handing out homemade chocolates is easy. Handing out homemade chocolates to your high-school crush is not. Stopping by a friend's house on Saturday is easy. Stopping by a friend's house on Saturday, on White Day, to offer gift-chocolate in return, is not.

However, it's worth mentioning how frustrating it is to continuously read how dense Tadano must be to keep missing all the signals Komi sends his way. Granted, she's not sending very many signals. But the signals the girl does send are quite irrefutable. During one critical, emotional moment, Komi calls out Tadano's name. In response, the young man asks, humbly, "What is it?" And sweet Komi, deliberately, removes, then puts away her notebook, and speaks (mumbles) her mind. It's a touching scene. Komi, it would appear, is the more aggressive of the two when it comes to being honest with her emotions.

These moments of forward reflection are increasingly common. For example, when Komi visits Onemine's home, her friend's younger siblings rather bluntly assess their shy new visitor: "You have a pretty voice. So you should talk more." The kids are rambunctious and annoying, but Komi senses they may have a point. "I'll do my best," she says.

KOMI CAN'T COMMUNICATE #9 is a fun volume and excels in all the small things, which is to say, is as consistent in its delivery of awkward humor, teen angst, and hopeful romanticism as most of the series' previous volumes. The mild heartbreak of Tadano and Komi often getting moments alone but never really taking large leaps in their relationship are expected.

Not to say quirky or uncomfortable moments don't pop up now and then. Tadano visits Komi's house one morning and the boy sits quietly while the girl's father slowly sips a cup of tea. Elsewhere, the three amigos -- Chiarai (pony-tail kid), Sonoda (slicked-hair kid), Shinobino (ninja kid) -- engage in a bit of hysterically wholesome fantasies about Yamai (yandere girl), Nakanaka (eye-patch girl), and Inaka (country girl), respectively, in terms how the kids dream their Valentine's Day might somehow turn out. The boys' fantasy lasts a scant two pages, but the passage is lovely and brilliant and sadly -- all too sadly -- all in the heads of the teenage boys. ...more

I just adore Komi & Todano.

I think we all went through a shy period growing up, so most of us can relate to these two. Komi is so cute! Oh she is just adorable! I love her hair, too. I think her & Todano would make such a great couple. He's the "average" kid in class, the one who doesn't stick out too much, yet everyone has just accepted that he is the closest confidant of Komi, the school idol. Everyone loves her. HELLO VALENTINES DAY AND WHITE DAY!!!

This volume was incredibly cute. We get the holidays of love, and we also get a new friend for Komi. We also get some follow up on another pairing that was hinted at within the previous volume, and I continue to enjoy this series.

Komi is growing, we see her using her voice more often, and with people other than Todono! I can't wait to see her grow more and more throughout the series! ...more

How can you not love Komi?

Valentine's/White Day with all the assorted things. The moments between Shoko and Hitohito are just absolutely priceless and as usual this volume does not fail to deliver.
