This has taken SUCH a turn since the first few volumes, while I like where it's going, I also miss some of the early characters - especially Haru who legit appears in this one for only a few pages.

but i also weirdly loved the last chapter of this book that focused on a completely new character/different story? it was so refreshing and nice and cute - I hope Itagaki continues throwing those into the story. ...more

Ughhhhh you know when you wanna slap someone or someone's yes that's what I wanna do with Lego and Haru.. but I understood what Lego is trying to do and my heart hurts for him.. he's trying so hard!!

And Louis and this new person??? Wonder if she shall be his new friend. Also his questions about Lego!!!

A less plot-advancing volume, BEASTARS 8 focuses on development and character relationships outside of Legoshi and Haru. (I missed focusing on her, but what little we do get is quite interesting. Somebody isn't quite as cool as she likes to appear.)

Legoshi gets serious about his training and his desire to be able to protect both Haru and the herbivores at Cherryton, but his school work and relationships at school are hurting.

Legoshi starts to train with Gohin, who wants him to continue his life as a student as a condition for his training. So Legoshi has to juggle a double life, where he has to go to school during the daytime, then train from evening to morning, and basically get no sleep, which is already taxing our poor wolf boy, but then he is also training himself to resist meat altogether, which even Gohin finds practically impossible for him. Meanwhile, on the other side Warnings: violence against sex workers

Legoshi starts to train with Gohin, who wants him to continue his life as a student as a condition for his training. So Legoshi has to juggle a double life, where he has to go to school during the daytime, then train from evening to morning, and basically get no sleep, which is already taxing our poor wolf boy, but then he is also training himself to resist meat altogether, which even Gohin finds practically impossible for him. Meanwhile, on the other side of the black market, Louis, the new head of Shishigumi, is cementing the respect of the lions under him by feasting on meat, but since he literally can't eat it, and there isn't exactly a vegetarian option here, he is also suffering a bit. Louis seems to be playing the long game here, because as of now, he is going along with the agenda of Shishigumi, legitimizing them in the eyes of the people of the black market.

Louis also threatens his father to sign off on him leaving school, which brings a tense moment between father and son; the distance between them in thrown once again into the light as Louis calls him out on being a negligent father, and wanting to cut off all ties with him. Deer father (yes, pun intended) is not yet ready to let go of his 'expensive' son, and calls his bluff and makes him only defer his school enrollment which I gotta say puts Louis at 0-1 with his father. Legoshi's relationship with Haru is called out by the latter when she scolds him for ignoring her, and Legoshi in big train-of-thought-charging-full-steam, skips several steps forward to just propose to her. Legoshi really doesn't know how to talk to girls, huh, as evidenced by him also asking Juno to show him her jaw and fangs so that he can compare and get a profile of the attacker he had basically french-kissed. Poor Juno, who is holding out hope but not getting a straight answer! She might as well give up; she already knows how important Haru is to him.

An unexpected side story (well, sorta connected) appears in this volume, of a okapi stripper working in the black market, who daily deals with the eventuality that one day she might just be eaten by one of the carnivore clients of the strip club. There's a whole sequence of scenes that goes into the complicated instincts of sexual attraction and appetite for meat of carnivores, recalling some of Legoshi's own struggles but also put on a broader scale. She also get rescued by Louis and sort of becomes his herbivore friend in this neighborhood, which was a nice touch but I doubt Louis is much for being little-brother'ed at the moment.

Wow! I love the new character that we get in this volume, and LEGOSHI GETS A GLOW UP??? I'm kind of here for the new look!
This story continues to surprise me, and I am honestly excited for this one to continue down the path that it is currently on. It's going to be a good time, and I look forward to how things are going to change for our characters. Legoshi is already making some major changes. I just wonder what that will do for him. ...more

Finally a review! It feels like it’s been forever since my last one (apologies on behalf of the bibliophile who is undeniably a reading snail). Today we tackle ‘Beastars Volume 8’, with this review essentially acting as yet another micro essay detailing how much I adore the series. One of my favourite aspects of this volume is the growing closeness between Legoshi and his mentor Gohin, who seems to be a father figure of sorts on top of simply being the one to teach Legoshi how to use his ‘inner Finally a review! It feels like it’s been forever since my last one (apologies on behalf of the bibliophile who is undeniably a reading snail). Today we tackle ‘Beastars Volume 8’, with this review essentially acting as yet another micro essay detailing how much I adore the series. One of my favourite aspects of this volume is the growing closeness between Legoshi and his mentor Gohin, who seems to be a father figure of sorts on top of simply being the one to teach Legoshi how to use his ‘inner beast’ for the sake of making society a better place. Speaking of which, he and Louis are certainly doing their fair share of growing up throughout all of the chapters. Sometimes it’s enough to make you forget that they’re around my own age, and yet they’re making enormous progress within themselves as they try to keep up with the realisations they have made. Interestingly, we got to see a bit more of the dynamic between Louis and his adoptive father Oguma as he tries to get the latter to sign the resignation slip to remove himself from school. There is some tension there, and you could sense that Louis’ upbringing wasn’t exactly filled with love and affection, but it is undeniable that there is some part of Oguma that does indeed care for him regardless of his cold exterior. Amongst all of the usual character growth, there were also some fun moments, such as the tug of war game between Legoshi and Bill (their rivalry is still going strong after all these chapters) and the impactful yet entertaining exchange between Legoshi and Pina. On the subject of Pina, he’s certainly and intriguing fellow, and I have a feeling that his relationship with Legoshi may become more important than we might expect. Also there was more panel time for the Shishigumi, which was great as always! I love Ibuki in particular, and even though there wasn’t a lot of him in this volume, I still appreciated his presence and I hope that there will be more content involving him very soon. Haru wasn’t very present within this volume, so there is very little I can say for her in terms of the direction in which her arc seems to be going. What I can say, is that I have a feeling that she’s probably going to turn into a love interest whose primary focus is Legoshi and their relationship. Which is fair enough, but it’s still disappointing when you consider that even Juno has goals of her own in mind. Last but not least, the final chapter of the volume focuses on a minor character, Sheila. At face value, I can see why some might roll their eyes and think that Itagaki is trying her hand at filler chapters, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Every part of the story is there for a reason, whether it focuses on the main cast or not. This particular chapter details how Sheila is fairing with the increasing focus of social media as a means of showing off one’s life as well as how the posts are presenting an idealised reality where both herbivores and carnivores get along seamlessly. It’s sweet and simple on the surface, but her outing with Peach has a heavy air to it despite all of the lighthearted banter the two share. The search for Tem’s murder continues, but it’s clear that arc will be imperative to Legoshi and Louis’ respective journeys to becoming the ones who will truly make a difference in the world. ...more

3.5 star. Of course my favorite aspect of this manga is Legosi and Haru. Their relationship is crazy complex and I want to see where is goes. But the story contradicts itself an awful lot. It's honestly getting too annoying and I'm hoping it has to do with translation errors. I mean like Legosi's grandfather is a pacifist and then 2 seconds later he is spilling everyones blood. This volume is just as fantastic as the others. It shifts the focus back to the overall main plot of investigating the murder that opens the series (Legoshi is tasked with finding the killer) and the hopefully-thinning bridge between herbivores and carnivores.

Legoshi goes incognito in the Black Market to train with Gohin. His goal is to suppress his wolf instincts to devour meat in order to become the carnivore protector of herbivores; in particular Haru, who Legoshi has recently been avoiding.

I do like the new character of Cosmo and the fact we do get more time with Louis and while Legosi is an awesome character I kind of wished we got more time with Louis. Just seeing Louis not only confronting his father and the fact he is ruling a gang of lions who would probably love to eat him is really interesting. But I do love Legosi and seeing what he has to go through to become better is also really awesome.

Mixed emotions about this one. There were some really amazing moments which made me jump out of bed and fist pump (really, I did).

And there were some moments which frustrated the hell out of me, specifically the direction of Haru and Legoshi’s relationship and where it’s currently sitting. Honestly, if there’s no turn around that will really save the couple, nothing can.

I did like how it ended on a very positive note about a different kind of mixed species relationship: friendship.

It's as good as any of the earlier parts, highly recommend it.
However, one thing I noticed is that Paru Itagaki's drawing style changed from the first part. At first, it was more realistic, and now i more cartoonish, cute and general manga/anime style. I like both styles, so I don't mind the change, and OK, Haru getting even more cute is always great ^^. ...more

This volume is mostly about Legosi training with the Panda. Two words, Meat. Meditation.
It’s interesting to see how Legosi‘s characteristics shaped his training. Asking the shopkeepers everyday for the names of the meat that he bought, and burying all of the meat that he trained with into graves with tombstones.
