Happy for this to be my 700th review of the year, since Demon Slayer is probably the best manga I've read all year along with Spy X Family.

This volume starts off amazing with Tanjiro and Giyu putting up a hell of a fight against Akaza and boy oh boy do both struggle and play off some awesome moves. On top of that we get Akaza background, and as much as we hate him at this point, his background sure adds so many layers to make him a better character. This volume was a bit more heavy on plot-contrivances and back-story, but it was still really good on the art. One battle with one of the main antagonist-lieutenants finally comes to an end. This guy was one of the most notorious villains of the series besides the big bad since the end of the Demon Train-arc. Dammit I hate it when I cry for the bad guys. This volume focuses on the fights against Akaza and Douma. Both are emotionally charged in very different ways. Akaza’s backstory is truly heartbreaking. It’s so heartbreaking I cried. It doesn’t excuse who he’s become, but Muzan has a habit of preying on those when they are unbelievably vulnerable and then sways them to become a loyal demon. Honestly though, my favourite part of this volume is that Inosuke's BACK, and ready to kick some a**! I love this guy, and I'd been missing his presence over the past few volumes 8'D

I have A LOT of conflicting feelings about this volume, most are negative. But before I get into them, let me say that I still really liked this volume and that I'm still pumped to see where this arc goes. Okay? Okay, let's go.

My first issue is with the finale of the fight between Giyu, Tanjiro, and Akaza. Now, don't get me wrong, I LOVED Akaza's backstory. It painfully shows the cycle of violence and how difficult it is to escape from it. Also, Akaza taking responsibility for his actions and ac I have A LOT of conflicting feelings about this volume, most are negative. But before I get into them, let me say that I still really liked this volume and that I'm still pumped to see where this arc goes. Okay? Okay, let's go.

My first issue is with the finale of the fight between Giyu, Tanjiro, and Akaza. Now, don't get me wrong, I LOVED Akaza's backstory. It painfully shows the cycle of violence and how difficult it is to escape from it. Also, Akaza taking responsibility for his actions and accepting his death was really cool. HOWEVER. Even though Tanjiro cut off his head, Akaza was the one who did himself in and I was kind of dissatisfied with that conclusion. This is the guy that killed Rengoku, probably the most beloved Hashira, and I was so stoked to see Tanjiro take revenge on Akaza for killing him. But in the end, Akaza pretty much ends himself and while yes, technically Tanjiro killed him by taking off his head, Akaza was able to regenerate and could have continued fighting. He just chose not to and while it is a narratively fitting end, I can't help but be disappointed by it.

The second issue I had was with the fight between Kanao and The Upper Rank 2 (sorry, don't remember his name) and how Inosuke just...kind of...highjacks the fight. Like, Kanao was having this moment and we FINALLY got to see her in action, but then Inosuke shows up and pretty much steals the spotlight from her. And my major issue with this is that we've gotten to see Inosuke fight MULTIPLE TIMES already, I wanted to see Kanao really duke it out with a higher ranking demon. But instead, Inosuke crashes the party and while his backstory is finally given and is truly heartbreaking, it doesn't make up for my aforementioned gripes. Granted, if those two end up working together I am SO THERE for that, but I really wanted to see more of Kanao and watch her shine. But it looks like THAT'S not going to happen...

Despite my complaints, this was a really solid volume with hard hitting moments and great action. Now I'm curious to see what'll happen next! ...more

To view it, click here. in Volume 18 Tanjiro and Giyuu are fighting the demon that Renguko (the flame hashira) got killed from, and together they kill the demon, but the demon doesn't want to die yet but something stops him from regenerating, and it was his soon to be wife. his past starts by him trying to give medicine for his father, he ends up stealing peoples wallets so he can buy medicine, but that ends up getting him in trouble and getting arrested. After his father hears about what happened to him, he hanged him in Volume 18 Tanjiro and Giyuu are fighting the demon that Renguko (the flame hashira) got killed from, and together they kill the demon, but the demon doesn't want to die yet but something stops him from regenerating, and it was his soon to be wife. his past starts by him trying to give medicine for his father, he ends up stealing peoples wallets so he can buy medicine, but that ends up getting him in trouble and getting arrested. After his father hears about what happened to him, he hanged himself because he felt bad for making him steal. Hakuji (the son) ends up fighting people because of his anger, then meets a man called Keizo, he lets Hakuji come to his dojo and train. Keizo introduces his daughter Koyuki to Hakuji, He starts to take care of her, because she is very ill, and that reminded him of how his father was very ill, so he started to take care of Koyuki. she ended up liking Hakuji, they were going to get married, but someone ended up poisoning the well that Koyuki, and Keizo drank in, and they ended up dying. the reason why Hakuji didn't get poisoned was because he was visiting his fathers grave. Hajuki found out it was one of the dojo members, he got so angry that he killed everyone in the dojo. he became a demon because Muzan (the demon king) met him and turned him into a demon, Hakuji's memories were lost, and he was one of the top demons. Hakuji killed himself because he didn't want to live anymore. after the demon died Tanjiro and Giyuu collapsed due to exhaustion. kanao is fighting the upper 2 demon and inosuke finds kanao trying to fight the demon, then he helps kanao fight the demon. Then Inosuke's boar mask falls off his face and the demon remembers his face, and it turns out he met his mother before she died, and the demon was actually the one who killed his mother, before she tries to leave him so he wouldn't get killed. Inosuke gets really angry and thats where the story ends.
-I picked 5 stars because how crazy the story gets as it continues and it just gets so exciting.
-someone else should read this book because this book is really cool to read and it always ends in a hanger cliff and it just makes me want to read more.
-something that i would change to make this book better is how it should show that the demon trying to stop Muzan (the demon king) from regenerating, like having to argue with Muzan, because he doesn't want to get regenerated. ...more

The way Tanjirou was not detected by Akaza, was truly amazing because he was able to try that "see through world" that his father told him.

Sometimes, I feel a small sympathy for these upper demons because they because demons because of their scarring past. Akaza's (Hakuji's) was one of those...

I know all shonen manga have the *past memories sequence* before and during a big fight. But I love that trope.

Getting a glimpse into Akaza's past, I was pretty much on the sadness cliff. The way the people in his life die. I felt for him, even if he's a killing demon fiend. And then getting to know Inosuke's past more, I really liked that and the sadness cliff welcomed me again. I'm eager to see how volume 19 will handle the fight between Inosuke/Kanoe and the 2nd rank upper demon. ...more

I need Demon Slayer to stop making me cry and feel bad for some of these demons. Reading about Azaka life as a human and the reason behind him wanting to get stronger. The image of what he did to people at the dojo...I am not sure I want to see that in the anime.

We get more history about Inosuke as well.

Feels like we are getting to the final battle.
