Shelves: arc, comics, in-translation, net-galley, read-2020

On the whole, this manga had great art and in and around the farcical situations it does feature people being kind to each other, which is a lesson we always need more of. I've only rad volume 1 and this volume of the manga, but there is a subtle yet annoying change from "who will he pick?" to "he has a harem but not really since we aren't porn but yet he totally does" which really isn't my thing.

Asumi gets her turn for her own arc in this volume. All is well as there is another Fumino chapter in it. 4 stars.

A bunch of stuff happens and it’s a lot like a bunch of the other stuff that’s happened before it.

I wouldn’t be lying if I said that I feel We Never Learn has ground its premise clear into the dirt and I genuinely think it should be wrapping up a lot sooner than it is. It isn’t bad, but it’s not particularly good either.

Even its typical cheesecake is mostly on the down low for this volume, which puts the focus on the writing and that’s a problem because it’s not terribly strong. It also feels li A bunch of stuff happens and it’s a lot like a bunch of the other stuff that’s happened before it.

It also feels like it’s leaning heavily into its popularity polls - Mafuyu is getting a large chunk of the good stories and the ones focusing on the others are dull.

In fact, the two best moments are in stories featuring her character. There is a very predictable apartment hunting chapter that runs every cliche in the book, but somehow makes it work and is a lot of fun.

The first story, continuing the end of the last book, has a nice little heart but also smartly lampoons the series’ penchant for getting Nariyuki into compromising situations with the females in the cast. There is also a flat-out shocking oral sex joke from Nariyuki’s mom that got a huge laugh out of me because of how audacious it was.

The big emotional multi-part arc this volume is about Asumi and her drive to be a doctor and I knew what was up with the new character introduced right away and the whole thing meant well, but it’s not as good as similar character-centric stories.

As an aside, I’m not sure what the heck is up with the translation here, but they call the Pocky game the pretzel something or other challenge and it felt super weird. I don’t know if it was framed as such in the original Japanese, but they even explain the game so I don’t know why they reframed it with such a weird name.

I could go further, but why bother? There are a couple bright spots in this one, but a lot of it is more of the same. It’s fitfully funny, but I expect better than a couple good stories and a bunch of forgettable ones. ...more

Nariyuki finally comes clean to his family about wanting to pursue education, but not without some awkward misunderstandings. More shenanigans abound in this volume, but that's not the main plot point as Asumi struggles to find her motivation as her goal of taking over her father's clinic is suddenly jeopardized. Warning: you might cry.

But the biggest surprise and the question I want answered comes at the very end of this volume. I'm caught, hook, line, and sinker for the next volume.

Another excellent offering in a wonderful series.

That whole section involving cram school senpai & the life of growing up in a small medical clinic was so heartwarming. Man, talk about the feels! It brought a tear to my eyes. Such a touching story. Yuiga is such a nice guy. He really goes all-out trying to help all these beautiful, alluring women in his life.
