I am going to be honest and say that I have put off writing this review for a few days. I blamed it on not having enough time, but it is really because I have difficulty writing reviews for books that I enjoyed as much as I did this one. My draft of this has been stuck on “LOVE LOVE LOVE”. Which I think probably expresses my feelings accurately, but maybe does not do the book itself justice. So, here goes.

Northern Wrath is Thilde Kold Holdt’s debut and the first book in The Hanged God Trilogy. A

Northern Wrath was a book from the gods themselves. Revenge is deadly, the swish of a blade, a whispered promise. This review is going to be exceedingly hard to write, and I hope I can deliver it the justice it deserves. Fantasy should catapult you into another dimension and Northern Wrath achieved that within just a few pages. Thilde Kold Holdt had me all in. The prologue hit like a steam train…I could smell smoke and danger and I was looking over my shoulder at the threatening shadow that prom ...more

This is the book the world needs right now. I was able to lose myself in the story, forget about everything that is happening, and just have fun. I loved everything about this book. The writing was crisp and clear and that coupled with some crazy original characters made for some pretty vivid reading. There are three or four story lines going at once, all cool and all interesting, and tons of great characters but for me Hilda was a standout. I won't go too much into what makes her so memorable b ...more

I received an ARC from the publisher (Rebellion) in exchange for an honest review.

A promising and ambitious debut.

This book grabbed my attention completely when I saw the gorgeous cover art by Larry Rostant and I immediately added it to my tbr. For all I knew though it could have been about A lost tribe of Norse gummi bears coming back to claim The Lost City of Marshmallow as it was just one of those covers where you don’t really need to ask questions. Stunning in its simplicity and allure. I co

Here are a few things you can expect from this book:

A Norse inspired viking fantasy;
A rich and detailed world filled with known and more unknown lore and myths;
Chaotic and bloody battle scenes;
A captivating plot.

There are been some astoundingly good fantasy novels come out over the last couple of years, novels that have, in my opinion, brought a breath of fresh air to the genre. Northern Wrath is another one of those novels.

It’s the first in a new trilogy by Danish-born author (and real-life Viking) Thilde Kold Holdt, and it sets the tone for what’s to come more or less from page one. The main thrust of the narrative appears to be the build up to Ragnarök, the Norse tale of the

ALL THE DAMN STARS.... I cannot stress how freaking perfect this book is. Grim dark, deliciously Norse, filled with characters you cannot help but to he completely enthralled with.
I didn’t want this book to end, it was perfect.

I’m writing this seconds after finishing it, and I’m dying for the sequel.
So many questions right now. And what a fantastic row of cliffhangers just waiting to be untangled in the sequel.

Damn it, you all need to read this. As a proud Viking, as a Norse goddess myself,

Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for awarding me with this ARC for Northern Wrath. I will now give my own honest opinion.

I have always appreciated Viking culture and stories so when I saw this ARC I just had to request it. The world building in this book is fantastic! The author has created such a well described world with different POV's, the whole book breathes the Viking culture and I have learned a lot just by reading. The characters are also written very well, they are well-rounded and

Remember your rage. Nurture it. Your wrath is sacred.

Belief in the old ways is fading and the final battle approaches in Northern Wrath, author Thilde Kold Holdt's powerful and utterly consuming Historical Fantasy debut. Part one of The Hanged God Trilogy is a sprawling narrative that takes us along on the merciless path of vengeance, highlighting the importance of honoring vows and respecting traditions of the past. A Norse-inspired epic that draws readers in with its intense beauty and pro

It's finally time! I am ready to talk about this beauty! Northern Wrath!

For any of you who don't know I am mad about norse mythology, actually most mythology but the norse pantheon has a special place in my apparently bloodthirsty heart, and when I saw this cover! And then read the synopsis: I was sure I would adore this story and by the Gods I did !

Believe me when I say this is fantastic! I am so happy I have been able to read this as an ARC, it blends Norse Mythology with a grounded story and the result is something very very special! This is one fantastic story of the Nine Realms, the beginning of a brilliant trilogy! A full review will be on my blog soon!

This book is long - like really long and it felt really long and that's something I struggled with - but it was also the kind of book where as soon as I finished I IMMEDIATELY messaged the one other person I knew who'd read it to discuss.

700 pages of action and heart and revenge and gods and magic and mythology. This is the epic Viking story I have always wanted. And it's a big old series, which I'm definitely going to be invested in as I now have to wait an entire year for the next boo

Northern Wrath is a book whose roots are firmly planted in a Norse cultural setting. It is a book which is rich in Norse myth and legends. A point to note is, whilst reading it, the subject matter never got in the way of the plot but rather complemented it. You don’t need any knowledge to understand any of this. As the author's research shines through and very quickly establishes the world.

Within this setting, the author creates some well-rounded characters, particularly Einer the chief’s son,

You don’t need to be a fan of Norse mythology to enjoy this book as it fits in nicely in the “grimdark” sub genre, I however do enjoy tales of vikings and gods and this pandered to my tastes well, I did think it meandered towards the end but that may have just been my adrenaline levels being high from the tension whilst reading the book, let’s have the next book in the series soon please

Firstly I’d like to thank Hannah at Rebellion for sending me this book and Thilde for writing it.

I’ve not read anything based on Vikings and my knowledge of them comes from that opening scene in Gladiator and two seasons of the famed Amazon show.

What Thilde has written here is a world, no, worlds filled with different characters each with their own believable goals. The characters are relatable and interesting, each is going to

Northern Wrath is a fun, gory romp through the frozen North, with Vikings! The characters don't have a lot of depth, and aren't terribly dynamic. The plot is a pretty straightforward revenge tale, without much in the way of twists or originality. The fantasy elements are lifted straight from Norse mythology, and are given enough context that it was possible to follow what was going on, although I constantly felt that if I was more well-grounded in my lore that I could have gotten a lot more out ...more

It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately.

What do you know about Norse Mythology? Most people would have heard of Odin/The Alfather, Thor, Loki (thanks Avengers!). If you are like me, you’ve also heard of berserkers, dwarves (hewn from stone - who in this case also turn back to stone if caught in sunlight), the Valkyrie, the Other Gods that live in Valhalla. However, there are also Jotun ( which I think are similar to frost giants, but they can change size), alvanar (which are like wood sprites) and Rune-mistresses who can use the runes ...more

In the far North War is coming. The Christians are coming to convert the Norse - whatever it takes. Lives will be forged in the flames of battle... and, in Thilde Kold Holdt, a new name joins the ranks of great Storytellers.

I'll be the first to admit I have a passion for Norse stories and Viking tradition so as soon as I heard of this book I was after a copy. And it turned out much better than I hoped (and I had high hopes to start with). I love a story that takes you from wherever you are and t

I loved this book. I haven’t read many viking inspired fantasies and I don’t know why! I loved the brutality and the morally grey characters of this story. I’m a sucker for some strong female leads and this book has a ton of badass female warriors which was one of my favourite aspects! I also really enjoyed seeing how much having faith matters so much for where the characters go in their afterlife’s and how important it is for them. Norse mythology is obviously heavily present in the story and I ...more

This is the viking book I have been waiting for! Its full of everything, epic battles, the Norse Gods, raids, families and friendships and fight for your beliefs in abundance!
This is a multi POV and I feel this really helps take this book to the next level as everyone is on their own path but they all are aiming for the glory of Valhalla and saving the Nine Worlds of Yggdrasil.
I urge everyone to pick this up if you need a epic fantasy!

I feel like there is a lot of potential here. The premise is entertaining, the characters are fleshed out and relatable, and there is a driving force to the plot.

What is lacking is some polish. As an unfinished product, I would rate this pretty strongly. As a completed product, it suffers by comparison.

Of course, I received an advanced reader copy so I am hopeful that the final version is combed over and cleaned up.

A great Viking adventure, full of gods, giants and thunderous battles. The writing style took a little bit of getting used to but, once I got comfortable with it, it felt like an epic tale told around a fire over the centuries. Looking forward to Book 2

Death, Pain and Fear

Nothern Wrath depicts the end of the Viking Age and has our protagonists coping with the inevitable arrival of Christianity. The Old Gods are fading and uncertainty runs rampant. I thought it was an interesting premise and also something that I have rarely seen as most of the mainstream Viking media just talks about them invading England. This is a much more compelling approach.

The premise is really mad
